Jocosa Culpeper
F, (say 1390 - )
Name-AltSpell | | This surname is sometimes spelled Culpepper. |
Name-AltSpell | | This surname is sometimes spelled Colepeper. |
Birth* | say 1390 | Jocosa was born at England say 1390. |
Married Name | September 1410 | As of September 1410, her married name was Hailsham. |
Marriage* | September 1410 | She married Sir Hugh Hailsham in September 1410. |
Biography* | | Catherine Robinson, February 15, 2000, regarding Jocosa Culpeper and Sir Hugh Hailsham: I have become interested in the above because I bought two brass rubbings some time ago in an auction in England. On looking through an old book about English churches a few weeks ago, I saw my brass rubbings. When I contacted the vicar of the church where they were, he sent me a booklet about them. The brasses are in St. George's Church, West Grinstead, Sussex, England. They are of Sir Hugh Hailsham (died 1441) and his wife Jocosa Culpeper (died 1420). Sir Hugh went to Agincourt with Henry V.
Reply from Warren L. Culpepper: I suspect, but cannot prove that Jocosa was the sister of Walter Culpeper of Goudhurst, Bayhall, and Hardreshull. His manors were all quite close (15-25 miles, as I recall) to West Grinstead. Walter, sometimes referred to as the Squire of Agincourt, fought at Agincourt under the banner of Sir William Bouchier with a younger brother and five yeomen archers from among his father's tenants. (Sir N. H. Nicolas, The Battle of Agincourt, 1832, P. 361) Walter's father (as well as Jocosa's, of course, if my theory is correct) was Sir Thomas Culpeper of Bayhall, Hardreshull and Exton (born abt. 1345, died abt. 1428). See: Individual 8404. Thomas is a direct ancestor of all modern-day Culpeppers. Incidentally, it appears that Jocosa is often written as Joyce, and that is the form that I have used within our records. But no Jocosa or Joyce appears in our records that would fit the person you describe. You'll note that Thomas had two wives, and the first was named Joyce and she may well have been the mother of the Jocosa Culpeper that you have identified. |

William Dela Shumate1
M, (circa 1881 - )
Birth* | circa 1881 | William was born at Georgia circa 1881. William Dela Shumate was the son of Berryman Dela Shumate. Berryman was born 4 Apr 1849 in Cedartown, Polk Co., Georgia, died 11 May 1935 in Montezuma, Macon Co., GA, and was buried in the old Felton Cemetery, Montezuma, Georgia. He married (1) Mattie Burnam and had one daughter, and (2) Michael Horne on 7 Mar 1875 with whom he had 7 children. Berryman lived in Birmingham, AL and was one of the pioneer builders of the Ensley District of Birmingham, AL. Berryman was the son of Mason Pyron Shumate and Nancy Mangum. According to oral family history, a few years after the Civil War, Pyron Shumate died. The oldest son John Will Shumate, went away to Civil War and his mother took his siblings and left the Atlanta area for a safer place to live. She went to Montezuma, but when John came back from the service he didn't like the gnats/climate and moved to the Thomaston, Upson Co., GA area where he became the "father" of the Thomastonline. I assume that Pyron is probably buried somewhere in the Dekalb Co., GA or Polk Co., GA area. He was born in Dekalb Co., GA but his son Berryman D. Shumate was born in Cedartown, Polk Co., GA. Nancy is buried in the old Felton Cemetery in Montezuma, GA. Mason Pyron Shumate was the son of Berryman Dela Shumate and Thurza Farrar, both of whom died in Dekalb Co., GA. This elder Berryman Dela Shumate was the son of Mason Shumate and Nancy Gatewood, both of whom are buried in Decatur Cemetery, Decatur, Dekalb Co, GA. They were a pioneer family arriving in Dekalb Co., GA in 1824.2,3 |
Marriage* | circa 1904 | He married Arlena M. Culpepper circa 1904.3 |
1930 Census* | 1 April 1930 | William was listed as the head of a family on the 1930 Census at Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama.3 |
