Biography* Bernard Gomez (b 7 Apr 1913), 86, of the 600 block of Marston Drive,
died Oct. 11, 1999, at his residence. Mr. Gomez was born in Hardwick, Vt., and was the son of the late Miguel and Carmen Mogro Gomez. He was the husband of the late Miriam Culpepper Gomez. He retired as a surveyor for the city of Chesapeake. In his earlier years, he farmed in the area of the Gomez borrow pit, which is now located on Centerville Turnpike. He was a member of Chesapeake Seventh-day Adventist Church. He is survived by a daughter, Linda Combs of Camden County, N.C; six sons, Charles Gomez, Mark Gomez, Vernon Gomez, Earl Combs, Eugene Combs and James Combs, all of Chesapeake; a brother, Robert Gomez of Virginia Beach; a sister, Alba Jackson of Virginia Beach; and 15 grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Chesapeake Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1200 N. Centerville Turnpike, by Pastor Rex Frost. Interment will be in Riverside Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge. (13 Oct 1999, The Virginian-Pilot.)

     Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Ivar Long Culpepper; two daughters, Arlene Marie Culpepper Mullaney and her husband, Jack, of Chesapeake and Linda Culpepper Lambert and her husband, Charlie, of Virginia Beach; a son, Harry A. Culpepper Jr. and his wife, Jane, of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren, Robin, Mechelle, Wendy, Andy, Harry III and Tammy; and 10 great-grandchildren, Jeff, Amber, Mandy, Brittney, D.J., Raven, Dule, Tyler, Jordan and Harry IV.
     A service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, April 10, 2000, at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, by the Rev. Harold Bergey. Interment will follow at Good Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery, Chesapeake. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.5

     Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Janet Guthrie of Chesapeake; a son, Steven Gale Culpepper of Chesapeake; and a brother, Harry A. Culpepper, Jr. of Chesapeake.
     A funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Graham Funeral Home by the Rev. Leroy W. Davis. Burial will be in Good Hope Church Cemetery.6

     A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Wednesday, January 30, 2013 in the Good Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery, 1633 Benefit Road, Chesapeake, 23322.

Kathryn Jean Culpepper Poindexter (b 19 May 1954), 38, of the 1400 block of Stewart St., a retired beautician, died Nov. 21, 1992, in Chesapeake. Mrs. Poindexter was born in Norfolk. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Mennonite Church. She was the daughter of Faye White Culpepper of Chesapeake and the late Reid W. Culpepper. Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Vernon James Poindexter Sr; two sons, Michael Shawn Fitzgerald and Vernon James Poindexter Jr., both of Chesapeake; her father, Philip Fitzgerald of Luther, Mich; and three brothers, Gordon Lee Culpepper, Robert G. He was preceded in death by his father, Reid W. Culpepper (b 26 Feb 1917, d May 1983) and his sister, Kathryn Jean Culpepper Poindexter (b 19 May 1954, d Nov 1992).
