Biography* | Although Daddy always said he was born in 1922, Aunt Exa always said he was born in 1921. Aunt Lilly said that she had listened in on a conversation with Daddy and Grandmother. In that conversation, Grandmother told Daddy that the Chinese counted from nine months, that she was there, and that he was born in 1921. In 1999, I decided to get a copy of his birth certificate to prove which year he was born in. I went to the Health Department, and they told me to come back in a few minutes because it had to be hand-pulled. When I returned, they informed me they could not give it to me because there had never been a name put on the birth certificate. I asked them to give me at least the year, and the lady said she couldn't even do that. I had to write and get his name put on his birth certificate. When I finally did receive a copy, it indicated that Daddy had been born in 1921, just as Aunt Exa had said. . When Daddy was young, he had two nicknames. One of them was Shirttail because his shirttail always hung out at the back. The other was Lightning. The way he got that was this: He was sent home from the field one day to get some water. It took him so long to get back that they started calling him Lightning. While he had several nicknames, he did not have a middle name. . Daddy was a construction worker. For many years, he worked as a carpenter; but later on, he began to work as a Millwright. He traveled a lot with his job. I know he worked in Mississippi, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, New York, and Pennsylvania. . Daddy loved his two grandchildren dearly. After he was diagnosed with cancer, he would call me at work and ask if he could go get Heath and Heather. He would go pick them up and then I would go by to get them. When Heath was a baby, Daddy taught him to call Jim, "Jima." He asked me what he could buy for Heath; I told him to buy a wooden high chair. I still have it. He called Heather, Heether. He would go to the refrigerator and ask her if she wanted some cheese. She would come running just as fast as her little legs would carry her. Mama and Daddy had a swing on the front porch. After Daddy died, Mama was going to sit in it one day; but Heather had a fit, crying something about that being Granddaddy's. So Mama took the swing down and never put it back up. .
