Joseph Van Buren Brantley1

M, (6 August 1813 - 18 February 1893)
FatherJohn Brantley2 (c 1778 - )
MotherMary Redding2 (c 1784 - )
Birth*6 August 1813 Joseph was born at South Carolina on 6 August 1813.
(Family Member) Relocationcirca 1817 He, as a family member, accompanied John Brantley in relocating circa 1817 at Conecuh Co., Alabama; The Creek Indians ceded much of South Alabama in 1814, and from part of this land, Monroe County was formed on 29 Jun 1815 by the Mississippi Territorial Governor. The Alabama Territory was created on 3 Mar 1817, and the AL Territorial legislature formed Conecuh County on 13 Feb 1818 from part of Monroe County.
Prior to the settlement of Brooklyn proper, quite a community had been formed on Ard’s and Bottle creeks. There were in this community, as early as 1818, two stores, owned respectively by McConnell and George Feagin. There was also a school being taught here by Mr Graham, of Georgia; and a blacksmith shop, owned by John Brantley. No trace of the settlement, which was about six miles northwest of the present location of Brooklyn, remains. The last vestige has been obliterated by plantations. A Methodist church was erected in 1821; the pastor of which was Elder Alexander Travis.3
(Free Male 0-20) Census1820 John, Francis and Joseph was probably a free white male, age under 21, in an unknown person 's household in the D Census at Conecuh Co., Alabama.4
(free wh male 15-20) 1830 Census1 June 1830 Joseph was probably a free white male, age 15 and under 20, in John Brantley's household, on the 1830 Census at Conecuh Co., Alabama.5
Marriage*circa 1833 He married Emily Katherine Travis at Conecuh Co., Alabama, circa 1833.
1840 Census*1 June 1840 Joseph was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census on 1 June 1840 at Conecuh Co., Alabama.6
1850 Census*1 June 1850 Joseph was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census on 1 June 1850 at Conecuh Co., Alabama.

Church*20 June 1857 Joseph, Emily, Jemima and Susan joined at Beulah Baptist Church, Conecuh Co., Alabama, on 20 June 1857 (Joseph V., Emily K., Susan, and Jemina Brantly were accepted by letter from Pleasant Grove Church. On 14 Aug 1857, he was chosen as Deacon. On 16 Oct 1859, he was excommunicated. On the 3rd Saturday of Feb 1860, he was called back to the church on charges (wife, Emily Brantley). [Source: Padgett & Callicott, "Beulah Baptist Church Membership Rolls...", 2000].)
Relocation*circa 1859 He accompanied by family member(s) Emily Katherine Travis, William Brantley, Jemima Adeline Brantley, Susan Brantley, Joseph Van Buren Brantley Jr., Edwin A. Brantley, John Manley Brantley, Benjamin N. Brantley and Robert T. Brantley relocated circa 1859 at Clay Co., Florida, The move occurred sometime after joining Beulah Baptist Church in 1857 and before the 1860 census when the family appeared in Clay Co., FL.
1860 Census*1 June 1860 Joseph was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census at Middleburg PO, Clay Co., Florida. In spite of this census showing the children born in SC, they were probably all born in AL..8
Relocationbetween 1860 and 1870 He relocated between 1860 and 1870 at Putnam Co., Florida; By 1870, the family had moved from Clay Co., FL to the adjacent county of Putnam.
1870 Census*1 June 1870 Joseph was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census at Timmons, Putnam Co., Florida. Lennia and Thomas appear in the 1870 census as ages 11 and 13 respectively. However, they are not found in this household in the 1860 census, so either the ages were wrong in 1860 or their parents are not Joseph V. and Emily Travis Brantley..9
Marriage*28 January 1871 He married Delilah Goodson at Putnam Co., Florida, on 28 January 1871 at age 57.10
(Father) 1880 Census1 June 1880 Joseph was listed as a father in Benjamin N. Brantley's household on the 1880 Census at Putnam Co., Florida.11

Burial*circa 19 February 1893 His body was interred circa 19 February 1893 at Brooklyn Baptist Church Cemetery, Brooklyn, Conecuh Co., Alabama.

Biography* Letter of March 20, 1968 to Mrs. Edgar Perkins, Box 734, Lynn Haven, Fla. 32444
Dear Mrs. Perkins:
Your letter of March 15, 1968 was read with interest. Yes, I am from Conecuh County, Ala. I was born and reared in Burnt Corn which is on the line between Conecuh and Monroe counties. There seem to have been several lines of Brantleys in those two counties, but I have never been able to establish a connection between them. My inability to do this, however, does not rule out a relationship between them. I wish I knew more about their beginnings.
The thought occurs to me that Mr. Thomas M. Thames, Jr. of Laurel, Miss. may be of help to you in connection with the Brantleys in and around Brooklyn, Ala. He is associated with Reeder, Street & Thames, Inc., and his address in Laurel is 407 Central Avenue, P.O. Box 145. He is of the Joseph V. Brantley line or has connections with that line. In a letter, dated May 2, 1964, which he wrote to Mrs. Lennis E. Shelton, 2616 Poplar Street, Montgomery, Ala. 36107 (with carbon copy to me) he says:
"Information on the tombstone in Brooklyn Cemetery in Alabama reveals that Joseph V. Brantley was born August 6, 1813 and died March 10, 1893. There is buried next to Joseph V. Brantley, his daughter Elizaberth Brantley Thames and her husband, Cornelius A. Thames. The grave of Emily Katherine Travis, wife of Joseph V. Brantley, is unknown. Emily Katherine Travis was a sister to William Barrett Travis, 'Hero of the Alamo'."
Mr. Thames goes on to say that "Mother and father of Emily Katherine Travis were Mark Travis and Jemmia Stallworth. Mark Travis was born October 6, 1783 and died September 15, 1836. Mark Travis was a pioneer farmer of Conecuh County, Alabama. He was born in the Edgefield District, South Carolina. It is to be noted in the Alabama history the following is stated: 'He was among the early pioneer farmers in Alabama, and at the time of his death had accumulated considerable substance including his home of several hundred acres of land, well stocked, a dozen slaves and several hundred head of cattle. He was a missionary Baptist, married January 1, 1808, near Redbank Church, Edgefield District, South Carolina, to Jemmia, daughter of William and another Jemmia Stallworth'."
Quoting further from Mr. Thames' letter: "I assume that Mark Travis is also buried in the Sparta Cemetery or what is know as the Old Beulah Cemetery. The parents of Mark Travis were Barrett Travis and Elizabeth Deloach. It is to be noted that Barrett Travis was a soldier of the Revolutionary War and is so listed in the book called 'South Carolinians in the Revolutionary War'. It is also to be noted that there is a history of Edgefield County, South Carolina that also gives a considerable writeup of Barrett Travis and his family. It is to be noted that the Travis and Deloach families came to this country from Ireland. The father and mother of Jemmia Stallworth are William Stallworth and Jemmia Tripp. These people were also residing in Edgefield District, South Carolina. Jemmia Tripp was a daughter of Jemmia McNamara, who was also from Ireland."
Mr. Thames in a letter to me, dated July 16, 1962, says "Elizabeth Brantley, who is the daughter of Joseph V. Brantley, married Cornelius A. Thames. I have a good bit of information after Joseph V. Brantley but none before him."
Mrs. Lennie E. Shelton, 2616 Poplar Street, Montgomery, Alabama 36107, in a letter to me, dated January 20, 1964, says: "I am a descendant of Francis Mantle (Mantel?) Brantley born 1807 in South Carolina, died in Escambia County, Alabama between 1870 and 1880, married Sarah Ann Jemima Travis (daughter of Mark Butler and Jemima (Stallworth) Travis, born September 12, 1812 in Edgefield District, South Carolina, died in Brewton, Alabama January 30, 1887. Emily Kathryn Travis (sister of Sarah Travis) married Joseph V. Brantley of Conecuh County. I do not know whether these two men were brothers of if they were sons of John Brantley who was in Sparta, Alabama in 1818."
In looking through some of the Brantley material I have I find that I have an extra carbon copy of a letter I wrote to Mrs. Shelton on April 20, 1964. In it you will notice that I have advanced the theory that Joseph V. and Francis M. Brantley were brothers. For the theory I have no proof. It is sheer supposition, but nonetheless interesting.
You might be interested in having a copy of Benjamin Franklin Riley's "History of Conecuh County, Alabama." This was published in 1881. I have brought out a reprint of it and will be glad to send you a copy for $4.00. I added an index to its 233 pages. Brooklyn is mentioned a good many times in it, John Brantley once, and the Travis references are numerous.
I hope this has been of some help to you. Circumstances have been such as to prevent me bringing together all the Brantley notes and material which I have gathered. Perhaps when I reach retirement I will try to get it in better shape.
     Sincerely, J. Vernon Brantley, 1350 G Street, S.E., Washington, DC 20003.
Reunion* A church homecoming is held annually on the 2nd Sunday of October at the Brooklyn Baptist Church, Conecuh Co., Alabama. It includes many descendants of Joseph Van Buren Brantley.
