She was survived by two sisters Mary Virginia Peacock Whitehead, and Elizabeth Claire Peacock; and her brother William Wallace Peacock, Jr. All three of her siblings were in attendance at the funeral. Also attending the funeral were her husband, daughter, grandchildren, and family members living in Florida and Georgia..1,2

Obituary*say 16 March 2013 University of Georga "Ticket Lady" Mary Virginia Peacock Whitehead passed away on March 15, 2013 at the age of 94. She was the daughter of William Wallace Peacock and Mary Frances Boland. Born on September 14,1918 in Quincy, Florida, she lived most of her childhood in Adel, Georgia. She is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Jenkins Comer Whitehead; and three sisters: E. Claire Peacock, Eleanor P. Mayer, and Sara P. Boyette. She is survived by her daughter, D. Anne Whitehead Garner and her husband, Michael Garner; her son, Robert Comer Whitehead and his wife, Kathryne DeVore Whitehead; four grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren; and her brother William Wallace Peacock, Jr. Mrs. Whitehead's grandchildren include, Karen Taylor Flanders and her husband Rhett Allen Randers of Erie, Pennsylvania; Kenneth Gregory Taylor of Rogers, Arkansas; Rev. Dr. Jason Comer Whitehead and his wife Elizabeth Minus Whitehead of Denver, Colorado; and Kristopher DeVore Whitehead and his Wife Amy Colene Stackhouse of Seattle, Washington. Her great-grandchildren include: Deanne Nicole Flanders and John Graham Flanders; McKenna Elizabeth Taylor and Lindsey Nicole Taylor; Caitlyn Rebecca Whitehead and Caroline Elizabeth Whitehead; and Jack StackhouseWhitehead and Sadie Stackhouse Whitehead. Mrs. Whitehead briefly attended Georgia Southwestern College in Americus prior to transferring to the University of Georgia in 1936. She graduated In 1938 with a degree in psychology. Virginia and Comer were married in 1940 and became long term residents in the Five Point area of Athens. While in school Mrs. Whitehead began working for the UGA Athletic Department, and that association led to her long career with UGA Athletics. She was best known among UGA supporters for her management of the school's sports ticket operations. However, during her 47 year career with UGA she managed many different functions, and became an Assistant Athletic Director in 1979 while working for Athletic Director and Coach Vince Dooley. During her tenure she served with five different head coaches Mehre, Hunt, Butts, Griffith, and Dooley. Mrs. Whitehead was also instrumental in the success of the UGA Bulldog Clubs during her career and played a pivotal role in the creation of the "UGA" mascot tradition. Prior to moving to Tucker, Georgia she was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Athens, Georgia. During her life she participated in many civic and church related functions, and still maintained her membership with the UGA Women's Club until her death. Mrs. Whitehead also studied art with Athens artist Jack Parr, and was a dose friend of Lamar Dodd, Dean of the UGA School of Art. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19 at the First United Methodist Church in Athens with Rev. Chuck Hodges and Rev. Grady Wigley officiating. Mrs. Whitehead will be laid to rest next to her husband In the Oconee Hill Cemetery immediately after the service.3
