James B. Sims1

M, (circa 1923 - 1945)
FatherJoe M. Sims1 (c 1856 - )
MotherStella Culpepper1 (Feb 1894 - )
Name-AltSpell This surname is sometimes spelled Simms.
Birth*circa 1923 He was born circa 1923 at Texas.1
(Son) 1930 Census1 April 1930 John, Jack and James was listed as a son in Joe M. Sims's household on the 1930 Census at Dallas, Dallas Co., Texas.1
World War II*between 1943 and 1945 He served in World War II between 1943 and 1945
(Raymond Brown wrote Warren Culpepper on 29 May 2009:
Jimmy Sims was my dad's assistant machine gunner, fighting in bitter combat, in Alsace-Lorraine area in France. More specifically in the town of Phillipsburg, France in the Vosges Mountains,in January, 1945.
Jimmy served in the 70th Infantry Division, D Company, 275th Infantry Regiment. We have visited his grave many times in the Lorraine American Cemetery, located in Saint Avold, France.
Jimmy was hit while in combat against the German 6th SS Mountain Division. My dad bandaged him up, it was bitter cold, deep snow, and they were in a bad situation. He wasn't in too much pain, due to the cold, he was shot through the hip. My father put him under him, to keep him protected, and continued firing at the Germans. Snipers were firing from the hills and woods, and had artillery dropping all over the place.
A round came in just below my father's chin, as he was laying on top of Jimmy, and went through Jimmy's helmet. My father asked if that hit him.
Jimmy didn't think so. Tree bark from a limb chipped off and flew into my dad's face. He found that the bullet just parted the top of Jimmy's hair. A grazing. Earlier D Company had taken about 30 German prisoners, after heavy fighting, and had them moved to the rear. Eventually, the 2 squads of D Company that were there, ran out of ammunition, had been surrounded, and were over-run and captured by the Germans. Jimmy was captured as well, thus they all became POWS. He was put into the back of a captured American jeep, driven by the German troopers. Several other Americans that were hit, were loaded up, as well as Germans that the 275th had hit, that were still alive, and moved to a German aid station.
My father believes that Jimmy died from the hip wound, in the custody of the Germans, as it was serious. That was the last they saw of James B. Sims. The Germans did provide medical attention, to many American soldiers, during the battles. The rest of the squad survivors from D Company ended up spending 5 1/2 months in a German forced labor camp near Dresden, Germany.
The guys remember that Jimmy had several sisters, and was from Virginia. He certainly has never been forgotten!!)
Death*1945 He died in 1945.
