Biography* | 21 August 2010 | Your Opinion: A cowboy's last ride If you were in the area around Northside Baptist Church late Saturday afternoon, August 7th, you may have noticed a unique sight. A horse drawn carriage led a lengthy funeral procession fit for a dignitary or great leader. The only ones I’ve seen similar were on television at the funerals of the late John F. Kennedy and Princess Diana. But this carriage ride wasn’t meant for royalty or anyone famous. It was the last ride for a simple, everyday cowboy named Donnie Culpepper. Donnie passed away Wednesday, August 4, with his family and closest friends by his side. It was probably the only time many of them have ever seen him sick and dependent upon the care of others. Many describe him as the toughest man they knew, never staying out of work because he was too tired or sick, and always pushing others to do their best in everything. He was a man known for his love of horses and rodeos, and for mentoring many young cowboys around South Georgia. He taught them to rope and ride, but more importantly, he taught them about the game of life. Justin Cooper was one of those fortunate enough to learn from this great teacher. “All the money, belt buckles, and saddles I’ve ever won in my career, I owe to Donnie,” said Cooper. “But it wasn’t always just about horses. I could talk to him about anything, from finances to personal stuff, and he always knew the right thing to do.” While Donnie enjoyed roping with everyone, two close to his heart were his son, Brad, and grandson, Braxton. Brad was only 12 years old when he won his first team roping competition with his Daddy, and now Braxton, age 9, has already won his first belt buckle with both his Dad and his Papa. Friends and family gathered to say goodbye to Donnie at Northside on Saturday, August 7. Rather than a funeral, it was more like a celebration of life and a tribute to a true cowboy. His children and grandchildren shared special memories of his life and legacy. His grandson, Jace Tison, called him fearless, and told of the many lessons his Papa taught him. Another grandson, Jared Tison, shared memories of how strong his Papa was, and how he could kill wasps by grabbing the whole nest with his bare hand. Everyone who shared their thoughts had a common theme. While he may have seemed tough as nails on the outside, Donnie had a heart of gold and could always make you smile and laugh, even on the worst of days. Leading his Daddy's beloved horse, Brick, Brad Culpepper led the way for the horse drawn carriage to Donnie’s final resting place in Red Oak Cemetery. His boots were turned backwards in the stirrups of his worn saddle, a gesture that symbolizes a fallen cowboy. Many people at the service said it was the most unique funeral they’d ever attended. That surely would have made this cowboy proud. Donnie Culpepper lived the kind of life you want to tell future generations about. I remember a high school English project that required me to video tape a grandparent talking about childhood memories of their favorite relative. My grandpa talked about a hardworking uncle who was full of adventure and lived life to the fullest. For me, Uncle Donnie is that relative. I can’t wait to share my memories of him with my children and grandchildren. We will all miss him so much.
