Obituary*23 August 2012 Robert Duff Maddox, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, at the age of 92.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Saturday at Christ Chapel Bible Church, 3701 Birchman Ave., Fort Worth.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant Care, 817-735-8741.
Pallbearers: Jim Bosler, John Butz, P.M. Cardwell, Beal Dean, Dr. Terry Drennan, Dal DeWess, Byron Folse, John Graves, Winfred Hooper, Burford King, Dick Kraatz, Paul Leonard, Joe Otto and Jim Webb.
Robert was the only child born to Payton Craig Maddox and Edith Duff Maddox on April 7, 1921. He was extremely proud to be a sixth-generation Texan whose ancestors were in the first 300 settlers brought to Texas by Stephen F. Austin in 1821. He attended and finished the public schools in Fort Worth and was in the first graduating class of Arlington Heights High School in 1937. After graduating, he entered SMU on an athletic scholarship lettering his freshman year in football, basketball, baseball and track. In his junior year he and his SMU Mustangs were co-champions of the Southwest Conference with A&M and went on to play UCLA in the Rose Bowl. The following year, he received an invitation to play in the Blue/Grey All Star Game. While at SMU, he served as president of the student body and as chief justice of the SMU Supreme Court.
During his senior year, he sustained a football injury, putting him in a coma for six weeks. He awakened in January 1941 to discover that Pearl Harbor had been attacked, World War II had begun and his friends had gone to war. He was left to fight his own battle for his life at Baylor Hospital where he remained for the next year. Close to death, he was allowed to be one of the first civilian test cases for penicillin, ultimately saving his life. Remaining on crutches for the next two years, he returned to SMU to earn his degrees in business and law.
While attending SMU Law School, he met Neva Culpepper whom he married after graduation and who remained the love of his life for over 60 years until her death in 2006. After law school, he took a job in Austin as assistant attorney general. In 1951 he joined with other prominent attorneys in Fort Worth to form the law firm of McDonald, Sanders, Ginsburg, Phillips and Maddox. In 1961 he was elected president of the Fort Worth Tarrant County Bar Association. Upon retirement from the practice of law in 1986, he received the Blackstone Award from the Fort Worth Tarrant County Bar Association.
He was an ardent hunter, fisherman and lover of the outdoors. As a hobby, he enjoyed raising Quarter and Paint horses on his ranch and in his later years, flowers and his beautiful yard became his passion. Having a remarkable memory, his family and friends were captivated by his keen intellect, wonderful stories and detailed recollections. His love, generosity and wisdom were always extended to all of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be missed more than words can express.
We wish to express our appreciation to all of the wonderful friends whose calls and visits meant so much to Dad. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Barbara Brogdon and Debe Dunkerley for their devotion and loving care and a special thank-you for the wonderful care provided by Covenant Care and Bright Star.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and his loving wife, Neva Maddox.
Survivors: Children, Cindy Crane Garbs and husband, Randy, of Houston, Lynn Matthews and husband, Steve, of Austin, Craig Cunningham and husband, Hugh, of Dallas and Duff Maddox and wife, Lynne, of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Barrett Crane, Todd Crane, Andy Crane, Ryan Matthews, Merrick Matthews Huckin, Blake Matthews, Taylor Cunningham Dawson, Dade Cunningham, Kemble Maddox and Payton Maddox; and 12 great-grandchildren.4
