Maria Elizabeth Pope1
F, (29 September 1799 - 20 July 1870)
Birth* | 29 September 1799 | She was born on 29 September 1799 at Red Bank, Edgefield District, South Carolina.1 |
Married Name | 20 December 1821 | As of 20 December 1821, her married name was Stallworth.1 |
Marriage* | 20 December 1821 | She married James Callaway Stallworth at South Carolina on 20 December 1821 at age 22. Shirley Bray wrote on 2 Nov 2004: "I've received copies of the estate records of Catherine (Travis) Pope from Edgefield Co., SC. On the first ledger page (see: http://gen.culpepper.com/archives/sc/images/CatherineTravisPopeEstate.jpg), the first entry speaks of James Stalsworth... in right of his wife. Maria Elizabeth Pope-Stallsworth is not mentioned by name here or in any of the estate documents. And, isn't this interesting that this entry is dated February 14, 1820 when the marriage record for Maria and James is dated December 20, 1821. But, the marriage record and also Virginia Genealogies & Biographies has documented James C. Stallsworth as the husband of Maria Elizabeth Pope so finding James Stalsworth as the son-in-law of Catherine Pope adds more proof to this marriage."1,2 |
Death* | 20 July 1870 | She died on 20 July 1870 at age 70.1 |

On the first ledger page (see: http://gen.culpepper.com/archives/sc/images/CatherineTravisPopeEstate.jpg), the second entry speaks of monies paid to attorneys for J. D. Williams & wife in part of the distribution share of Harriett Pope and the third entry speaks also of monies paid to attorneys in full satisfaction of a decree obtained against Wm Stalsworth, Guar. in favor of J. D. Williams and wife. Here is ... confirmation of the marriage relationship between Harriet Pope, daughter of Catherine and Elijah Pope, between J. D. Williams.... "There are 2 additional ledger pages, titled 'Harriett Pope' which run from 1818 to 1826, that show Wm. Stallsworth's accounting of monies spent for schooling, clothing and sundry items. There is no listing listing on these pages for Harriett Pope for boarding as there was on Jane's pages. I have yet to find a marriage record for Harriett Pope and J. D. Williams but have found the date of July 5, 1828 which was posted on the web site of Nanci Holley..."1,2 |
