In the Central/Space Coast Region of Florida, Orange County was formed in 1824 from Saint Johns County, but it was named Mosquito County until 1845. In 1854, the northeastern part of Orange was split off to form Volusia County. In 1887, parts of Orange were split off to help form Lake and Osceola counties. In 1913, the northern part of Orange was split off to form Seminole County. Orange's county seat, Orlando, is at the intersection of I-4 and the Florida Turnpike, about 70 miles northwest of Tampa and 115 miles south of Jacksonville. Orange is bordered by the counties of Lake, Seminole, Brevard and Osceola.
