In the Northeast Region of Florida, Putnam County was formed in 1849 from Alachua, Marion, Orange and Saint Johns counties. Its county seat, Palatka, is on US-17 about 50 miles south of Jacksonville. Putnam is bordered by Lake George and the counties of Clay, Saint Johns, Flagler, Volusia, Marion and Alachua.
