On the Gulf coast in the Panhandle Region of Florida (aka the Redneck Riviera), Walton County was formed in 1824 from Escambia and Jackson counties. In 1915, the western part of Walton was split off to form Okaloosa County. Walton's county seat, DeFuniak Springs, is on I-10 about 65 miles east of Pensacola. Walton is bordered by the Florida counties of Okaloosa, Holmes, Washington and Bay, and the Alabama counties of Geneva and Covington.
