193? Article in North Carolina newspaper, no date, from scrapbook of Mittie Hahn Ritchie - MINUTE BIOGRAPHY by Mary Frix Kidd: The subject of today's Minute Biography is a well known citizen who for eighteen years represented his ward as a member of the city council and in point of service is the second oldest insurance salesman in the city.

His name is Harris Clifford Hahn.

One of the ten children of the late William Luther and Jane Barrier Hahn, the subject of this sketch was born July 28, 1881 in a log house on a farm in Number Eight Township three miles east of the town of Mt. Pleasant. In his boyhood days he attended school at the Hahn schoolhouse and as he approached young manhood spent some time at North Carolina College, later Mt. Pleasant College Institute.

He walked to school and back to his home each day, a total distance of six miles.

In the autumn of 1903, Mr. Hahn came to Concord to work for Cannon (AP) Fetzer Company in the grocery department at a salary of $5 a week. He remained with this company six years, after which he spent four years with the firm of Hahn and Honeycutt and then worked for Cline and Moose until 1917 when he went to work for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. He has served that company continuously since October 1917 as salesman and collecto Only one other of that company's local men, John R. Cress, has served a longer time than Mr. Hahn, the former having begun work in August, 1917 In March 1904, about six months after coming to Concord, Mr= Hahn married Mrs. Josie E. Fisher and four years later, in 1908, they built their first home on Corbin street.

At that time there were no street lights in that section of the city, and Mr. Hahn and Jacob Moose used to carry a lantern when they went home at night through the old Lutheran cemetery Mr. and Mrs. Hahn are the parents of two daughters and one son, Elizabeth (Mrs. Jack Chorney) of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Virginia (Mrs. Edgar Winecoff) and Robert Young Hahn, of Concord They have one grandchild, Gail Winecoff, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Winecoff who live with Mr. and Mrs. Hahn in the handsome brick home they built in 1929 at the intersection of West Corbin street and Virginia Avenue which was named by the City Fathers in honor of Mr. Hahn's daughter.

When he moved to Concord from the country, Mr. Hahn moved his church membership to St. James Evangelical Lutheran church of which he is still an active member and has served on the church council for six years.

Mr. Hahn was elected to the Board of Aldermen a few years after coming to Concord and while serving on this board worked hard for the good of then entire city and especially for Ward Three, being influential in the opening of the streets now called Washington Lane, Hillcrest Drive, Louise Avenue, Virginia Avenue, and South Spring Street from Chestnut to Tribune Street intersections as well as many others.

He was especially interested, too, in the upkeep of the historic Concord landmark, the old Lutheran cemetery on West Corbin Street Since he has been with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Mr. Hahn has been one of its most faithful and consistent workers and has won a considerable number of trips and other awards for outstanding services.

He is an active member of the Cabarrus County Life Underwriters Association. Although he is not affiliated with any fraternal orders or civic clubs, Mr. Hahn is much interested in the betterment of this city and county. For the past 20 years Mr. Hahn has served as president of the Hahn clan, arranging programs for the reunion which is an outstanding event of each summer His chief hobby is hunting, and for more than ten years was president of the Dick and Hahn Opposum club.

Hahn Will Henceforth Farm, Hunt, And Give Part Time To Insurance Work - After 23 years of active service in the industrial insurance field as agent for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, H. Clifford Hahn, well known civic and religious leader retired on December 30 and will henceforth devote his time to looking after his farm and selling ordinary insurance and health and accident insurance

Mr. Hahn joined the Metropolitan Company in October 1917 and served three years as agent He was then made assistant manager of the Concord office, but after serving three and half years in this capacity, he was, at his own request, returned to the field as an agent and debit collector. An excerpt from a letter to Mr. Hahn from Cecil J. North, vice-president of the Metropolitan company comments thus: "We always feel keenly the passing from active service of those who for many years have so ably represented the company in their community

We want you to know how much we appreciate the great contribution your years of faithful service has made to the important place the company holds " Though busy with his insurance business, Mr Hahn found time to serve his city eighteen years as alderman from Ward Three. At the time his last term expired, he had served longer than any alderman in the city's history. Since young manhood, he has been active in the work of St James Lutheran church, having served on the church council six years, president of the Men's Bible Class six of eight years, and secretary of the Brotherhood five or six years. He was also superintendent of the Sunday school for a long while At present, Mr Hahn is president of the Hahn clan and has been so for more than 25 years.

He has actively promoted the annual Hahn reunion held in the summer near Mt Pleasant and always attended by large crowds. Mr Hahn and his wife, the former Miss Josie Emma Fisher, whom he married March 12, 1904, live on West Corbin street With them live their daughter, Virginia (Mrs Edgar Winecoff) and her husband and daughter, Gail.

General Notes:
Full name shown is from "Births" page of family Bible of William L. Hahn and Jane S Barrier Hahn

Bible is dated between 1891 and 1898, and apparently obtained by the family as new after 1897.

The births of all of their children, with the exception of Bertha Little Hahn in 1900, appear to have been written in when the Bible was "new", as was marriage of Minnie Victoria Hahn to Martin L Penninger in 1897 All of this handwriting is the same, as is the marriage page of William & Jane S Hahn.

All other marriages and deaths appear to have been written at various times by various people.

This Bible was passed on to daughter Mittie Hahn, then to her daughter Evelyn Ritchie and then to her daughter Sharon Payne. 1960 Living in Mt Pleasant NC in 1960 - brother Cliff's obituary. 1967 Social Security Death Index - JASON HAHN Residence: 28124 Mount Pleasant, Cabarrus, NC Born 22 Mar 1890 Last Benefit: Died Sep 1967 Issued: NC (Before 1951) .

Another name for Mittie was Mittie Elizabeth HAHN RITCHIE.

General Notes:

Mittie and Mal lived originally at the Hahn house across from the mill, and this is where their first child, Babe, was born In about 1914, they moved to the "old home place" of Aaron Ritchie Mittie did not like the isolation of the house, and was afraid. One morning she saw a man walking up the road toward the house, so she grabbed Babe and took off for the field where Mal was working. She refused to come back to the house by herself. At lunchtime, the main meal of the day, they all trooped back to the house, where she then had to fix the meal for them to eat. Mal stayed at the house the rest of that day. Here is where their second child, Ken was born. At that time Babe had her bed in her parents room downstairs, and awoke the next morning upstairs. Her cousin Neva, who was nine at the time, came and stayed with the family to watch after Babe.

About 1917, they moved to the farm, which belonged to Luther Ritchie. Here is where Madelynne and Bill were born. Babe attended 1st and 2nd grades at St. John's School during this time. Because Mal could not handle the farm work by himself, in 1919 they moved into town - Mt Pleasant.

When pregnant with her twins, Mittie contracted malaria and was very ill as her daughter Babe recalls Mittie worked for her brother Farry, as the office manager at the cotton gin They also sold fertilizer ??years?? When we would visit in the summers, we had great times at this warehouse. There was a refrigerator that always had ice cold soft drinks in 6 ounce bottles, with small chunks of frozen drink.

One of us would get on a dolly that was used to move the bags of fertilizer, with another of the grandchildren pushing.

Another pair would be on another dolly, and we would have races from one end of the warehouse to the other.

Mama Ritchie would call the small grocery store across the street from the warehouse and order her groceries by phone.

They would deliver them to the house and put them away!! One summer I was there for a week with my cousin Richard, no parents.

I remember waking up one morning (around 11) when the grocery delivery boy came in the house and started putting the groceries away. It scared me to death! Handwork was Mittie's hobby.

She made many quilts, and tatted a lace tablecloth for each of her granddaughters and a lace bedspread for each grandson.

One year, my sister Camille and I took several of our old quilts made by Mama Ritchie, that were beyond repair, and had stuffed bears made from the pieces

We had one for each of Kay & Camille's kids, for Kay, Camille, myself, our mother, our cousin Sandy and her mother Madelynne. See photo of all of the bears before they were distributed. All of the grandchildren loved Mt Pleasant, and some of the great grandchildren, too The house was at 124 Main Street, about a block up from the main intersection of town. We would walk to Moose's Drugstore and buy ice cream cones for a nickel a scoop, hang out, and read the comic books. For a few years there was a movie theatre which would show movies on the weekends for twenty-five cents (if I remember right) Holy Trinity Church was just another block from this intersection, and of course we went to this church every Sunday we were there Sandy and I went to visit every summer, sometimes twice, once with her parents and once with mine.

The kids in the town always came riding up on their bikes about the time we drove in the driveway - word spreads fast in a little town. We played softball in the empty lot next door (where the fire station currently stands), watched wrestling on TV, played poker and had a great time. Our Mt. Pleasant friends were the Lentz kids from across the street - Charles, Helen and Margaret; the Callahans also from across the street - Benny and Bubba (Ben & Mike); Buddy (Herman) Watts and Eldon Lambert (killed in Vietnam) In 1984, Mittie moved to Hendersonville, North Carolina to live with her daughters, both of whom lived in the same neighborhood. Mittie would stay one month at Babe's house, and one month at Madelynne's house.

This continued until 2 months prior to her death Babe and Madelynne were no longer physically able to take care of her, and she was moved to a nursing home.

Special notes: Mittie was known as Mama Ritchie to her grandchildren and many other children in the area.

Babe remembers her mother being terrified of lizards, and always trying to chop them in half! I found a school book of Mittie's in which she had written notes to another girl about how cute she thought Mal was.
