AUGLAIZE TOWNSHIP


REV.   JOB D ALLERTON, Pastor of the Regular Baptist Church ("Mount Zion") near West Newton, was born Sept. 4, 1838, in Stark County, where his parents, Samuel and Amelia Allerton, still reside. They formerly lived in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. They have seven children--Job D., Andrew O., Cordelia A. (deceased), Clara E., Samuel (deceased), George W. A. and Amos V. Allerton. Mrs. J. D. Allerton was Sarah A. Smith. Her parents, John W. and Mary Smith, removed from Pennsylvania to Stark County, Ohio, where they still reside, and where Mrs. A. was born, March 5, 1834. Following are the names of Mrs. Allerton's brothers and sisters: Elizabeth, Matilda, Solomon W., Jacob J., Lovina, Amanda C., George K. and Rebecca J. Smith. Although Mr. Allerton has lived in this county less than two years, he has had charge of his present congregation for four years, and is now permanently located with them.

JACOB L BAKER is the son of John D. and Catharine Baker, who had ten children--Jacob, Parker, Addison, Eliza, Amos, Maria, Michael, Catharine, Isaac and Sarah. His wife is Margaret, daughter of Flmman and Elizabeth Miller, whose children are George, Clarissa, Melinda and Margaret. Mr. Baker was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, Jan. 25, 1814, and came to Allen County, in 1837. His wife was born in Fairfield County, on the 25th of Dec., 1827. They have eleven children--Henry M., Catharine L., Rebecca J., John N., Malvina A., Andrew M., James L., Jacob M., Mary Jane, George and Michael A. Catharine is the wife of Allen Clem, and lives in Kansas. Rebecca was married to Henry Binkley, and lives in this township. John married Mary E. Doud, and lives in this township. Mrs. Baker has two children by a former marriage--Mary Funk and Aaron Sites. Mr. B.'s mother came to this county in 1864. In 1852 Mr. Baker's tobacco house was destroyed by fire. No insurance.

MILTON W BOWDEL married Letitia, daughter of Andrew and Sarah McCoy, who came from Virginia in 1833. Mr. Bowdel was born in Ross County, January 10, 1818. His wife was born in Virginia, January 5, 1827. Their children are Elisha T., Mary M. (wife of W. H. Hover, of this township), Loretta B., Charles W. (died in infancy), and Matilda E. (who died at the age of twelve). Mr. B. is the son of Joseph and Lucretia Bowdel, whose children were named, James B., Jessie L., Milton W., Annie C., and William B. Mrs. Bowdel's brothers and sisters are David, Elisha, Moses, Mary, Elizabeth, Miriam and Jane.

MADISON T BOWYER was born in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, in 1813, and came from Logan County to this county with his parents, James and Margaret, in 1835. He married Rachel, daughter of Daniel and Rachel Sargent, whose children are, Elbert, Rhoda, Jackson, Susan, Rachel, Amos, Nathan, Harvey, Nesbit, Susan, Charlotte and Cora. Mrs. Bowyer was born in Champaign County in 1818. Her parents never lived in this county. Madison T. and Rachel Bowyer have four children--Henry H., Susan S., Alfred E., and Cynthia A. Susan was married to Joseph McCoy, and Cynthia to Nathan Crubb. They both live in this county. Henry is married, and lives in this county.

H E BURTON, M.D., is the son of Luke and Cynthia Burton, whose other children are William V., John H., George W., Enos H., and Edward T. Dr. Burton was born in Pickaway County, April 14, 1840, and came to Allen County in 1871.

THOMAS B CHENEY was born in Union County, July 30, 1836, and his wife was born in Mercer County, Pennsylvania, on the 24th September, 1842. Their children are Lellen S., John Q., Orph., George B. and Charles W. Mr. C.'s parents are John and Sarah Cheney. He has one brother, Jonathan. Mrs. Cheney was Mary T. Talk, daughter of Gideon and Hannah Talk. She has three sisters: Lydia, Sarah J., and Melinda E.; and one brother, Levi Talk.

ELISHA COPELAND, was born in Clinton County, Oct. 6, 1823. His wife was born in Champaign County, Dec. 15, 1832. They have five children--Irene, Alice, Armena M., John W. and Josie V. Irene is the wife of Calvin Turner, of Hardin County. Mrs. Copeland was Elizabeth Brunstetter, daughter of John and Effie Brunstetter, who came to Allen County in 1830. Their children are Louisa, Charles, Elizabeth, Henry, Rebecca, Mahala and John W. Mr. Copeland's parents are Joseph and Elizabeth. Their children are Abner, Elisha, Philip, Mary, Judith, John, William and Elizabeth.

ALEXANDER CREPS is a son of Peter and Barbara Creps, who had five children--Lydia, Maria, I---, Alexander and Eliza. Alexander was born in Pennsylvania, November 25, 1806, and came to Allen County in 1833. He married Rebecca Mans, who was born in Maryland, September 1, 1815. Their children are, Sylvester A., Margaret A., William W., and Hamilton D. Mrs. Creps' parents are Ludric and Elizabeth Mans, whose children are, Nicholas D., Catharine, Eliza, George, Rebecca, Rachel and Jacob. Mr. Creps has held the offices of Supervisor, Treasurer, Trustee, and Justice of the Peace.

JAMES M HARROD is the son of William and Mary Harrod, and brother of Margaret R., Albert M., and Laura A. Mr. and Mrs. Harrod are both natives of this county. He was born April 1, 1842; she on the 17th of February, 1842. Mr. Harrod's parents settled in the county in the year 1841. Mrs. Harrod was Martha Patterson, daughter of John and Catharine Patterson, who came to Allen County in 1838. Her brothers and sisters are James, Henry, William, Jane, John, Nancy and Dorotha. The children of James M. and Martha Harrod, are Josephine D., and Laura D.

PETER JACOBS, son of Mark and Margaret Jacobs, married Annie Ward, daughter of James and Mary Ward. He was born April 14, 1810, in Warren County, and she was born in Perry County, Feb. 29, 1808. Mrs. Jacobs has two brothers, John and James Ward, and a sister, Elizabeth. Her parents came to Allen County, in 1854. Mark and Margaret Jacobs never resided in this county. Their children are Mary, Cyrus, Peter, John, Caroline and Daniel. Peter came to Allen County in 1834. The children of Peter and Annie Jacobs are Mary, James, William, Samuel and John. Mary is the wife of Alexander Madden, and lives in Missouri. James married Susan Hall, and lives in Kansas. William married Mary Scroter, and Samuel married Nancy Parker, and both live in Allen County.

JOHN H KEITH, and his wife, were born on the 25th of April, 1825; the former in Perry County, Ohio; the latter in Washington County, Pennsylvania. He is the son of Joseph H. and Mary A. Keith, who came from Huron County, in 1835, and whose other children are James T., and Sarah H., Mary A., Hannah J., and Elizabeth C. Mrs. K. was Eleanor Hill, daughter of Richard and Maria Hill, who came from Pennsylvania, in 1853. She has one brother, Thomas Hill, and one sister, Elizabeth. John H. and Eleanor Keith have eight children living: Wm. J. (married Dorotha White, and lives in Hardin County), Mary M. (married to Jeremiah Broullier, and lives in this county), Michael B., Charles W., Elizabeth A., Sarah J., Rezin J., and Margaret M. Their son, Richard H., died in the army, in 1865. Two daughters are dead, Susannah and Glorinda C.

ALEXANDER KERR was born in Knox County, October 12, 1819. He married Jane McCoy, who was born in Virginia, January 6, 1823. They have six children--Sarah J., Harrison E., Rufus A., James F., George W. and Albert R. Sarah is the wife of Shepherd Rudy, of this township. Mr. Kerr's parents are James and Elizabeth Kerr, who have seven children--Martha, Robert, Eleanor, Eliza, James, Alexander and Jane. His wife's parents are Andrew and Sarah McCoy, who came to this county in 1833, and whose children are, David, Elisha, Moses, Mary, Elizabeth, Miriam, Jane and Letitia.

ROBERT MULHOLLAND was born in Tyrone County, Ireland, July 29, 1833. He has four children: Mary A., Etta May, Rachel M., and Maria Estella. He has two brothers, John C. and Joseph. Mr. Mulholland was Road Supervisor from 1866 to 1874.

HENRY C PATTERSON was born in Auglaize County, January 15, 1836. His wife was born in this county, January 12, 1844. His parents came to Allen County in 1837; her parents came from Knox County, in 1841. Mr. P. is a son of John C. and Catharine Patterson, whose nine children were named, James, Henry C., William A., Elizabeth J., Martha A., John T., Syriax C., Nancy H., and Dorotha. Mrs. Patterson was Margaret R., daughter of William and Mary Harrod, who had five other children: James M., Albert M., Dennis B., Laura A., and Eudora B. Henry C. and Margaret R. Patterson have four children: Mary C., Clement L. V., William P., and Laura B.

ROBERT L PRESTON, son of James and Elizabeth J. Preston, and brother of Charles W. and Miland Preston, was born in Knox County, November 12, 1851. He married Elizaneth Brunstetter, who was born in this county, July 14, 1856. They have one child, Dora May. Mrs. Preston is a daughter of Charles M. and Margaret Brunstetter, who came from Hardin County, in 1851. Mrs. P. has two brothers, Samuel U. and John W. Brunstetter, and one sister, Mary J.

SHEPHERD RUDY and his wife were both born in Miami County--he Feb. 16, 1823--she May 19, 1833. They have eight children--Almeda, Eliza J., Adelia, Mary, Franklin, Marvin, Elmer and Olive M. Eliza J. was married to John Place, and now lives in Iowa. Mr. R.'s parents are Jacob and Fannie Rudy, who have eight children--Frederick, Jacob, Nancy, Elizabeth, Fannie, Shepherd, Aaron and Sarah. Mrs. Rudy was Ann Stonebarger, daughter of Adam and Sarah Stonebarger, whose children are Margaret, Sarah, John, Adam, Lydia Ann, William, Eliza and Martha. Mr. Rudy came to this county in 1851--his parents came in 1858. Mrs. R.'s parents never resided in this county.

JOHN SHERRICK was born in Pennsylvania, Oct. 18, 1814. His parents, Jacob and Catharine Sherrick, died in Fairfield County. He married Matilda J. Neeley, daughter of James and Rachel Neeley. She was born Nov. 17, 1814, in Fairfield County, where her parents died. They have two children living--Jacob L. Sherrick and Margaret A., wife of Wm. Johnston, of this county. A daughter, Elizabeth, died in Fairfield County in 1841; and their son, James N., died in Allen County in 1865. The names of Mr. Sherrick's brothers and sisters are Andrew, Mary, George W., Christopher, Jacob, Levi, Catharine, Henry, Matilda and William. Mrs. Sherrick's brother and sisters are William T., Edward B., Elizabeth, James, Margaret, David, Ellen, Isabella, Clarissa and Sarah.

ADAM SMITH was born in Perry County, in 1821. He married Elizabeth Tabler, who was born in the same county in 1827. They have seven children--William H., Margaret A., Asbury O., Mary C., Charles, Adam and Eva M. William married Margaret Sprinkel, and lives in this county. Margaret was married to George Swinehart. Mr. Smith's parents are John and Jemima Smith, who had seven children--James, Adam, Joseph, Maria, William, Samuel and Sarah. His wife's parents are Jeremiah and Margaret Tabler, who had five children--Mary, Peter, Thomas J., Jonas, and Elizabeth.

LEONARD A SNYDER is a native of this county. He was born in Jackson Township, May 9, 1841. His parents, Adam and Elizabeth Snyder, came from Perry County in 1834. They had nine children--Rebecca, Sarah, William, Jacob, John, Mary, Leonard, Susannah and Nancy. He married Caroline, daughter of George and Fanny Shrider, who came from Perry County in 1854. Mrs. Snyder was born in Perry County, August 16, 1850. Names of the children of George and Fannie Shrider: John, Jacob, Sarah, Andrew, Mary A., Thomas, Caroline, Nancy and Jennie. Children of Leonard A. and Caroline Snyder: Sarah J., Cyrena A., Dora I., Ira L., and James N. They lost an infant son April 10, 1869. Mr. Snyder held the office of Constable in 1864.

HENRY SPRINKEL, was born in Pennsylvania, in the year 1825, and came to this county in 1857. His parents, John and Barbara Sprinkel, never resided in Allen County. They had seven children--Maria, Henry, Peter, William, Catharine, Mary and Margaret. Mrs. S. was born in Perry County, in the year 1830. Her parents, Jacob and Elizabeth Madding, never removed to this county. Their children are Mary, Elizabeth, Leah, Hannah and Phoebe (Mrs. Sprinkel). The children of Henry and Phoebe Sprinkel--Mary E., Margaret, Jacob, Peter, Ella, Addie and Clara. Mary is the wife of Henry King, of Hardin County. Margaret was married to Harem Smith, and lives in this township.

JAMES H TAEBOR--Mr. Tabor's parents, Alanson and Lucy, came to Allen County in 1824, from Vermont, where James was born on the 17th of Feb., 1823. He has two brothers, Charles R. and William H., and one sister, Mary J. He married Elizabeth K. Hulliberger, born Dec. 29, 1832, in Perry County, whence her parents, John and Mary Hulliberger, removed to Allen County in 1836. Names of Mrs. Tabor's brothers and sisters: Sarah A., Susannah B., Reason F., Eda M. and Joseph M. James H. and Elizabeth K. Tabor have three children living--Byron, Ira and Elsie G. In the year 1864, from Aug. 15 to Sept. 1, four of their children died--Cynthia A., Martha J., Lucy E. and Mary A.

HIRAM THOMAS, M.D., was born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, Jan. 30, 1827. He married Rebecca A. Wade, of Cornhill, Massachusetts, daughter of Dr. Henry Wade, with whom he studied medicine. He graduated in Philadelphia in 1856. Dr. Thomas was practicing medicine at Maxville, Ohio, when, in 1862, he raised a company of volunteers for the war. His company was incorporated with the 114th Regiment of O. V. I., which was sent to Vicksburg. Soon after the close of the war, Dr. Thomas removed to West Newton, in this county, where he has every since zealously followed his profession. In 1872 he was elected President of the Ohio State Eclectic Medical Society, and in 1873 was again elected. The children of Hiram and Rebecca Thomas are five daughters, three of whom are married. The eldest, Minetta D., is the wife of Dr. J. T. Croney, of Walkerton, Ind. Annie M. married J. B. Marshall, now a merchant at Indiana City, Pennsylvania. Florence A. is the wife of Dr. Jas. H. Wells, of Van Wert, Ohio. Mary and Rose Alba are the names of the two youngest. Dr. Thomas' father, whose name was Hiram, married Anna Shields. They raised a family of nine sons and three daughters. Seven of their sons and three sons-in-law served three years in the Federal army during the war of the Rebellion. One son died from the effects of a wound received at Savannah. Mrs. Thomas has a brother living at New Straitsville, Ohio. Her father, Dr. Henry Wade, is a cousin of Hon. Benj. F. Wade, ex U. S. Senator.

ANTHONY WINEGARDNER, and his wife, Elizabeth, were both born in Perry County; he, January 13th, 1831; she, June 28, 1833. Their parents never resided in this county. Mr. W. is the son of Absalom and Mary Winegardner, who had four children: Herbert, John, Anthony and Absalom. Mrs. W. is the daughter of George and Sarah Anspach. she has four sisters: Leah, Sarah, Margaret and Susannah. The following are the names of the children of Anthony and Elizabeth Winegardner: Mary Ann, George Franklin, William Allen, Lewis Jefferson, Emma Olive and Sarah E. The last named died September 1, 1862. Mary Ann was married to William J. Wetham, who died September 28, 1873.
