GERMAN TOWNSHIP


GEN. WM. ARMSTRONG was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, December 3, 1798. His first wife was Harriet McMillen. His second wife was Catharine King. He is now living with his third wife, Hannah, daughter of Samuel and Joanna McClellan. She was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, February 11, 1808. Gen. Armstrong is the son of John and Elizabeth Armstrong. He has one brother, Martin Armstrong. Mrs. Armstrong has two brothers, Wm. and Andrew McClellan, and one sister, Hannah. Gen. Armstrong's children are John M. (deceased), James A., Margaret A. (deceased), Emeline E., Capt. Martin Armstrong (killed at the battle of Shiloh), William K. and Harriet C. In 1841 Gen. Armstrong came to this county, in 1843 he was elected Brigadier General of Ohio Militia; in 1854 he was elected County Treasurer; and re-elected in 1858; and in 1869 he was elected Representative in the State Legislature, in which office he served two years.

JOHN BEILER was born in Columbiana County, in 1818, and at the age of fourteen came to Allen County with his parents, David and Nancy Beiler. He has three sisters and two brothers: Catharine, Mary, Esther, David and Samuel. His children are Samuel L., John C., A. C., E. F., Carrie and Josephine. Mr. B. has held the office of Township Trustee three years.

J T BENEDOM was born in Virginia in 1829. He is a son of John and Mary Benedom. His wife is a native of this State, and is a daughter of William and Margaret Holmes. Their children are William, Mary, John, Charles, Obadiah, Thersa and Bertha. Mr. Benedom's brothers and sisters are James, Martha, Edmund, Mary, William, Thomas, Albert, Franklin and Susan. Mrs. B.'s brothers and sisters are Rebecca, Obadiah, Elizabeth, Joseph, William, Anna, Ellen and Mary J.

MADISON L BOWYER was born in Monroe County, Virginia, in 1826, and was brought to Allen County by his parents, Isaac and Elizabeth Bowyer, in 1831. During the same year Mrs. Bowyer, then four years old, was brought to the county by her parents, William and Eliza Pridley, who came from Ross County. They have eight children: Ann Eliza, Josephine, Martha, Isaac, John, Clarinda, Amanda, and Charles M.

CHARLES CRITES, son of John Daniel and Catharine, was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, July 25, 1809. In 1812 his parents removed to Pickaway County, Ohio, where Charles learned the trade of blacksmithing and acquired the elementary principles of an English education, although he never had any of the advantages of a common school. He worked at blacksmithing from 1827 to 1842, but has since been chiefly engaged in farming. In 1835 he had saved sufficient to purchase a piece of wild land in this county, and in 1839 he came from Pickaway County and settled on his land, where he now resides. Mr. Crites has held many public and private trusts. In 1840 he was commissioned Captain of Militia, and in 1844 Captain of Light Infantry. From 1843 to 1849 he held the office of Justice of the Peace. He served two terms (1852-1862) as District Land Appraiser. He was Representative in the State Legislature in 1853-4. From 1849 to 1874 he took out letters of administration for seventeen different estates. He has also held various township offices. Mr. Crites married Sophia, daughter of Jacob and Mary Ludwig. She was born in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, July 14, 1813. Their children are Daniel L., Jacob S., Catharine, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Cyrus and Elias, Emanuel, Mary Ellen, George W., and Frederick S. Mr. Crites is brother of Samuel, Reuben, John, Juliana, Cyrus, Amos, Levi, Catharine, Jacob and Elias.

DANIEL L CRITES, son of Charles and Sophia (Ludwig) Crites, was born in Pickaway County, Oct. 30, 1833. His wife is Martha, daughter of Griffith and Rachel John, who came from Ross County in 1832. Mrs. Crites was born in this county, Sept. 25, 1833. Their children are Bertha W., born March 12, 1856; Tirzah Keren, Feb. 7, 1858--both born in this county. Mrs. Crites has three brothers four sisters living; Mr. C. has five brothers and four sisters. Mr. Crites has held a number of public offices; he has been Township Assessor and Land Appraiser, Surveyor of Putnam County, Auditor and Deputy Clerk of Allen County, and was First Assistant Clerk of the Ohio House of Representatives, 61st General Assembly.

ELIAS CRITES and his wife, Leannah (Mowery) Crites, are both natives of Pickaway County, and their children were all born in that county, viz.: Mary Celena, born June 25, 1852; John Daniel, born September 23, 1855; and Willison Williard, born May 3, 1858. Mr. Crites was born June 25, 1825. He is a son of John Daniel Crites and Catharine Crites, and brother of Charles, Jacob, etc. Mrs. Crites is a daughter of John and Rachel Mowery.

JACOB CRITES, son of John Daniel and Catharine, and brother of Samuel, Charles, Amos, Levi and Elias, was born in Pickaway County in 1822, and at the age of 20 settled in this county. His wife was born in Warren County in 1822. Their children are, Mary A., Stephen D., Emeline, Henrietta, Obed, Cyrus D., Daniel H., and Sarah A. Mrs. Crites is a daughter of James and Elizabeth McDonel, who came from Champaign County in 1833, and whose children are, James, Mary, Elizabeth, Lydia, Sarah C., and Nancy A. Mr. Crites has held several township offices.

JESSE J JOHN, son of Griffith and Rachel, and brother of Sarah, Melissa, Emily, Ethan, Yamsey, Abiah, Martha and Paulina, was married to Mary Roush. Their children are Griffith, Martha, Paulina, Frank P., Jesse C., Jehu E., Charles E., Wilbur F., Eliza A., Letta A., and Isaac N. Mr. John was born January 6, 1827, in Ross County, whence his parents removed to this county in 1832. His wife was born in Juniata County, Pennsylvania, December 17, 1835. Her parents, Jacob M. and Hannah Roush, came to Allen County from Pennsylvania in 1849. Mrs. John has two brothers and three sisters--Henry, Eliza, Joseph, Anna, and Melva.

ABRAHAM KESSLER was born in Fairfield County in 1809, and came to this county in 1844. His parents are Peter and Elizabeth Kessler; his brothers and sisters are Samuel, Barbara, Amelia, Anna and Peter. His wife is a daughter of Cyrus and Catherine Crites, who came from Fairfield County in 1843. Mrs. Kessler was born in Fairfield County in 1830. Mr. Kessler's children are: Elizabeth, George, Peter, Elias, Lily, Charles and David. Mr. Kessler has held the office of Township Trustee.

GEORGE KESSLER, son of Abraham and Mary Kessler, was born in Fairfield County, in 1838. His wife, daughter of P. and Margaret Herring, was born in Allen County, in 1840.

JOHN LEWIS LUTTRELL, son of James and Elizabeth Luttrell, married Lockey R. McGuire, daughter of William and Elizabeth McGuire. Mr. L. was born in Shelby County, October 29, 1829, and at the age of ten came to Allen County with his parents. His wife was born in Hamilton County, 16th January, 1825. He has one sister, Rebecca; she has one brother, Thomas McGuire. Their children are James L., Adam W., Wm. N., David M., John W., and Tobias H.

DANIEL L MILLER was born in Bath Township, Allen County, January 23, 1846. His wife was born in Jackson Township, May 17, 1846. They have five children: Hannah E., Solomon S., Mary E., Lydia M., and George W. Mr. M. is a son of Daniel and Mary Miller. His wife is Matilda, daughter of Solomon and Hannah Smith. Mr. Miller's brothers are Samuel, Joseph and Isaac; his sisters are Sarah, Barbara and Mary. Mrs. Miller has three brothers: George, John and William Smith; and three sisters: Susan, Prudence and Nancy.

JAMES M MONTAGUE, son of John and Mary Montague, was born in Virginia, 12th January, 1815, and came to Allen County in 1854. He married Susan, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Lockhart. Mrs. M. was born in Pennsylvania, June 20, 1821. They have three children: Thomas, Lizzie and Mary E. Mr. Montague's brothers and sisters are Spicer, John, Samuel, William, Joseph, Richard, Nancy, Mary, Fanny, Hannah and Susan. Mrs. M. has one sister, Eliza, and four brothers, Jacob, Henry, Frederick and David Lockhart.

DR. RICHARD RICE was born in Oswego, New York, 7th February, 1825. His wife, Sarah, daughter of Matthew and Mary (Queen) Brown, was born at New Lexington, Ohio, 15th April, 1827. They have two sons, Carman Buel and Charles Boynton. Dr. Rice came to Allen County in 1855. His parents, Joseph and Sarah (Buel) Rice, came from Kentucky in 1867. Mrs. Rice's brothers and sisters are, Joseph, Isaac, John, Ephraim, Matthew, Alexander, Osborn, Absalom, Nancy, Chloe, Maria, Mary and Sarah.

REV. H S THOMAS, son of Aaron and Hannah Thomas, was born in Cape May County, New Jersey, May 10, 1823. His wife, Martha J., daughter of Jacob and Rachel Bennett, was born in Wirt County, Virginia, April 22, 1834. They have three children: William A., Lydia M., and Emma A. Mr. T.'s Parents never lived in this county. Mrs. T.'s parents reside in Randolph County, Indiana.

JOHN WEAVER, son of Peter and Elizabeth Weaver, and brother of David Weaver, was born in Augusta County, Virginia, November 20, 1811. He married Sarah, daughter of John and Hannah Bowers, and removed to Allen County in 1850. His children are Mary C., Hannah E., Olivia B., Louisa H., Benj. F., Lydia H., Melissa L., John W., Sarah V. and Samantha L. Mr. Weaver has held the office of Justice of the Peace for fifteen successive years.
