Personal Histories of Allen County, Ohio -- 1875
MARION TOWNSHIP LESTER BLISS, son of David and Mary, and brother of Morgan L., Maria, Mahala, Mason and Porter, was born in Knox County, in the year 1817. His wife is a daughter of Manuel Hover. Their children are David M., Charles C., and Lester L., who was buried at Fort Scott, Kansas, in 1868. Mr. B.'s parents died in Knox County. Mrs. Bliss is one of a family of six, all but two of whom are dead. Mr. Bliss has held the office of Prosecuting Attorney, and was Member of the Legislature in 1852. JOHN CLEMENT and his wife are both natives of Germany. He was born in 1843--she in 1845. They have four children--Anna, John, Mary and Peter. Mr. Clement's parents, John and Mary Clement, still live in Germany. They have eight children--Mary, Michael, Louis, Anna, Helena, Catharine, Mary Ann and John. Mrs. C. is a daughter of Peter and Eva Shuck, who came to Allen County in 1850, and whose children are, Adam, Peter, John, Caroline, Joseph, Jacob, Burney, Martin and Anna. DAVID W DITTO, son of William W. and Mahala Ditto, was born in Brown County, in 1846. His wife was born in Allen County, in 1848. They have had but one child, Charles A., who died in 1871. Mrs. D.'s parents, Calvin and Edith Harris, came to Allen County in 1847. They had four children--Angeline, R. B., C. B. and Florence B. WILLIAM W DITTO and his wife were born in Brown County--the former Oct. 23, 1823; the latter Aug. 12, 1822. They came to Allen County in 1848, and "entered" and cleared the farm on which they have ever since resided. Names of their children: David Wilson, Samuel Franklin, Melvina and Emily Maria. Mr. D.'s parents, Richard W. and Rebecca Ditto, removed from Brown County to Allen County in 1852. They have eleven children--Mary, William W., Jane, David, Sarah, Ruth, John, Gideon, Elmira, Emily and Richard. Mrs. Ditto was Mahala Brown, daughter of William and Sarah Brown, whose children are Samuel, Lorenzo D., Hannah, Mahala, Rachel and Nancy. NELSON HAYES was born in Essex County, New York, Jan. 12, 1809, came to Allen County in 1840, and settled on the farm now occupied by him. His wife was Sally Jones, daughter of Alanson and Rhoda (Slater) Jones. She was born in Essex County, New York, July 20, 1808, and died on the old homestead in Allen County, Oct. 21, 1842. They have five children--Alexis P., Juliette C., Clarinda E., Russell J. and Isaac B. Mr. Hayes' parents removed to Allen County in 1844. Their children are Rhoda, Alanson, Flavilla, Nelson, Enos, David, Milo, Ann and Rosetta. Mrs. Hayes' parents died in Essex County, New York. They had ten children--Russell, Sarah, William, Harry, Bushrod, Permelia, Eunice, Ann, Van Rensselaer and Charles. Mr. Hayes was Township Clerk three years. A J HOEFFEL--Father Hoeffel, a priest of the Catholic Church, was born in France, May 14, 1832. His parents are Charles and Magdaline. They have eight children--Michael, Margaret, Joseph, Edward, Charles, Magdaline, A. J. and Catharine. ALEXANDER F IRICK was born in Virginia, in the year 1819. His parents, Jonathan and Mary Irick, died in Fairfield County, this state. They had eight children--John F., George W., Isabella, Alexander F., Elizabeth, Julia, Diana and Mary. Mr. Irick married Elizabeth Kiggins, who was born in this state, in the year 1820, and whose parents, Jonathan and Elizabeth Kiggins, died in Mercer County. She is one of a family of ten--Minerva J., Lewis, Mary, Rosanna, James, Margaret, Elizabeth, Catharine, Harriet and Charlotte. Following are the names of the children of Alexander F. and Elizabeth Irick--John F., William L., Mary C., (Theressa and Francis C., deceased), James I., Minda, Alexander, Elizabeth, Dorixa, Jack M. and Eliza E. Mr. Irick has held several township offices. JAMES I IRICK--While an infant, Mr. Irick was brought to this county, in 1845, by his parents, Alexander and Elizabeth Irick, who formerly lived in Fairfield and Mercer Counties. Mr. I. was born in Mercer County in 1845. His wife is Melvina, daughter of Wm. W. and Mahala Ditto. Charles of James I. and Melvina Irick--Emma A., Wilson, and Frank. Mrs. I. was born in Brown County, in 1845. JACOB LUDWIG is a son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Finck) Ludwig, who had five children--Sophia, William, Jacob, ---- and George W. Jacob was born in 1818, in Pickaway County, where his father died, in 1824, and where his mother still resides. He married Louisa Delong, who was born in 1823, in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. They have six children--Isaac, John D., Charles C., Mary J., Obed A., and Jacob L. Mrs. Ludwig is a daughter of Andrew Delong and Catherine (Laudie) Delong, whose children are, John, Rebecca, Isaac, Elizabeth, Susan, Catharine, Louisa, Caroline, Sarah, Emily and Andrew. JOHN D LUDWIG and his wife, Elizabeth M., are both natives of this county. He was born Oct. 14, 1849,--she Sept. 30, 1855. His parents are Jacob and Louisa Ludwig. She is a daughter of Alexander T. and Elizabeth Irick. DAVID NIEMEYER and his wife were born in Europe; but during their childhood were brought to this county. Mr. N. was born in 1843, and is the son of Henry and Elizabeth Niemeyer, and the brother of Mathias. Mrs. N. is the daughter of John and Rosanna Clement, who had eight children. Mr. Niemeyer has two children--Catharine and Elizabeth. D H TOLAN, ex-Mayor of Delphos, and publisher of the Delphos Herald, was born in Carroll County, in the year 1836. His parents are James and Elizabeth Tolan. His wife is a daughter of John and Nancy Beatty. WOERNER BROTHERS--Maximilian and John A., merchants, in Delphos--are sons of A. Joseph and Mary Anna Woerner, who have seven children. Maximilian and John were born in Wurtemberg, Germany--the former in 1835, the latter in 1839. They came to Allen County with their parents in 1849. MAXIMILIAN WOERNER, of the firm of Woerner Brothers, Delphos, was born in Wurtemberg, Germany, Oct. 11, 1835. His wife is a native of Hesse Darmstadt. Their children are, Joseph Alois, Maximilian, Charles Edward, Francis Joseph and Alexander. Mr. W. is a son of Alois Joseph and Mary Anna Woerner.
