Personal Histories of Allen County, Ohio -- 1875
MONROE TOWNSHIP STEPHEN COOK was born in Richland County, April 3, 1819, and came to Allen County in 1843. His father and mother, William and Eunice Cook, who were originally from Washington County, Pennsylvania, came to Allen from Richland County in 1855. Mr. Cook married Amanda, daughter of Gavin and Ann Mitchell. They have eight children--Ann J. and Martha L. (twins), Eunice J., Isabel A., William M., Robert C., Stephen W. and Albert B. Following are the names of the children of Wm. and Eunice Cook: Hannah, Samuel, Eliza, Arenath, Eunice, Catharine, Julia, Martha, Patterson, Eleanor, Mary, Sarah and Stephen. Mrs. Cook has three brothers and two sisters--Martha, Isabel, Robert, Josiah and Barnet Mitchell. Mrs. Cook was born in Richland County, Dec. 17, 1818. ABRAM EARLY is a son of Jacob and Mary Early. His wife, Sarah, is a daughter of John and Elizabeth Miller. Both families came from Rockingham County, Virginia, in 1839. But Mr. and Mrs. E. were both born in this county--he on the 25th of December, 1840; and she Aug. 16, 1849. They have four children--Mary E., Emily A., Ella and Calvin S. The children of Jacob and Mary Early are, Noah, Isaac, Abram, Jonas, Elizabeth, John, Samuel, Sarah and Jacob. John and Elizabeth Miller have six children--Samuel, John, Jacob, Sarah, Elizabeth and Barbara. SAMUEL M MILLER was born in this county, January 12, 1844. His wife was born in Rockingham County, Virginia, May 23, 1841. Their only child is Clara May Miller. Mr. Miller's parents came from Rockingham County, Virginia, in the year 1839, and settled in this county. They have ten children--Catharine, Sarah, Samuel M., Daniel L., John, Barbara, Mary, Jacob, Joseph and Isaac. Mrs. Miller's parents, John and Hannah Sheets, live in Indiana. Their children are, David, Ann E. (Mrs. Miller), Leanna, Francis E., Hannah C. and Sarah V. SAMUEL NEHER, SEN., was born in Rockingham County, Virginia, August 3, 1810. His first wife was Anna, daughter of Elder Abraham Miller, who came to Allen from Logan County, in 1833. Anna was born in Montgomery County, July 28, 1822--died December 26, 1859. Mr. Neher's second wife is Salome, daughter of Abraham and Salome Miller, and full sister of his first wife. She was born in Logan County, February 28, 1827. Mr. Neher's children are, Mary, Joseph and Samuel Abram. Mr. N.'s parents, John and Magdalena Neher, removed from Virginia to Clark County, Ohio, in 1817. Their children are, Elizabeth, John, Henry, Susan, Mary, Catharine and Samuel. Names of the children of Abraham and Salome Miller--Joseph, Anna, Mary, Abraham, Salome, Christian, Catharine, Barbara, Phoebe, Sarah, Daniel, Susannah and Samuel. ROBERT N ROCKHILL, son of Samuel and Mary F., was born in this county, July 10, 1840. His wife was born in Pennsylvania, May 2, 1854. They have two sons, Charles W. and Albert R. Mrs. R. was Mary J. Blaize, daughter of Willson Blaize, who came from Pennsylvania in 1860. She has two brothers, Willson and Cyrus Blaize, and one sister, Callie. Mr. R. is one of a family of seven--William B., Thomas, Eleanor, Adonijah P., Sarah, Alfred and Robert N. Samuel Rockhill, father of Robert N., was born in the State of New Jersey, May 2, 1793, and came to this county (then Putnam County) in 1835. At that time the village of Lima contained only eight or ten houses and one little store. The county was a wilderness, and the wolf and wild cat had free range. After his farm was partly cleared, Mr. Rockhill laid out the village of Rockport. His energy, intelligence, and uprightness of character, won him many friends, and soon marked him as one worthy of public trust. Mr. Rockhill was a leading man in many enterprises for the improvement of the county--such as the building of a county infirmary, and securing a railroad through the county. He was a County Commissioner five years--held the offices of judge and justice of the peace twelve years--and various other offices. He was a sincere Christian, and for many years in pioneer times gave his house for public worship. He then gave the land for a church building and cemetery, and assisted in building the church. Mr. Rockhill had great faith in the success of the Union soldiers in the war of the Rebellion, and lost a son and a grandson in the war. Near the close of the war, while nursing a sick son in the hospital, he lost his own life. JAMES D VAN METER is one of the oldest living pioneers of Allen County. He and his father's family came to Allen from Richland County, in the year 1833. When James arrived here he had only "three shillings" in money to begin with. They were obliged to carry corn on their backs to a handmill, near Lima, and grind it themselves. In those days taxes were sometimes paid with coon-skins, and the flesh of wild turkies and deer was their only meat. James was born in Brook County, Virginia, September 9, 1804. His parents, Isaac and Susannah, had nine children--James D., John, Hugh, Elizabeth, Adam, Elzy, Sarah, Isaac, and Nancy. He married Maria Shriver, who was born in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, February 25, 1812. They have nine children--Susannah, Mary, Nancy A., John, Rachel A., Samantha, Louisa E., George S., and Elizabeth. Mrs. Van M.'s parents, George and Mary Shriver, have six children--Nathaniel, Nancy, John, Mathias, Polly and Maria. Mrs. Van Meter's half-brothers and sisters are, David, Philip, Rachel and Sarah A. J R WALTZ was born in November, 1813, in Jefferson County. He is a son of Samuel and Barbara Waltz, who have eight children--Sophia, Keziah, Bazelen, Samuel, Jacob, Mahala, Elias and Barbara. Mr. Waltz married Delila E., daughter of Obadiah and Rebecca Holmes, who came to Allen County from Tuscarawas County, in 1862. Mrs. Waltz was born in Carroll County, July 20, 1816. William, Elijah, Clum and James Holmes are her brothers. She has one sister, Anna. J. R. and Delila E. Waltz have seven children--Elias L., Thomas H., Isaac L., Jacob A., Rebecca E., Joseph M. and Barbara A. Obadiah S. Waltz, member of Company E., 20th O. V.
