RICHLAND TOWNSHIP


RUDOLPH ALTHAUS was born in the canton of Basle, Switzerland, in the year 1823. His parents are Heinrich and Barbara Althaus. Names of his sisters and brothers--Mary, Barbara, Elizabeth, Henry, John, Gothart, Catherine, John (deceased), and Gothart (deceased). His wife was born in Wayne County, in 1841. Their children are Mary (deceased), Andrew and Werner. Mrs. Althaus was Barbara Amstutz. Her parents are, Peter and Barbara. She has a sister, Anna, and three brothers--Peter, Joseph and John.

DR. F J BALDWIN, born July 19, 1832, in Portage County, is son of George B. and Eliza L. Baldwin, whose children are, Ann, Annette, F. J., Adelaide, George E., Sarah and Ellen. His wife was born at Franklin, Pennsylvania, July 30, 1837. They have one child, Herald. Mrs. B.'s parents, Nathaniel and Mary Ann Carey, have five children, George, John, Zelia, Jane and Ellen.

JOHN BLOSSER lives in Van Buren Township, Hancock County. He was born in Putnam County, Aug. 5, 1855. His parents, Christian and Catharine Blosser, came from Stark County. They have five children--John, Jacob, Noah, Susan, and Henry.

ALVAH CLARK, of the firm of Clark and Franks, Bluffton, is the son of Jonathan and Hannah Clark, who had a family of twelve children. They came to this county in 1854, from Mahoning County, where Alvah was born, September 26, 1845. His wife was Victoria McConnell, daughter of J. T. and Eliza McConnell. She was born in Hancock County, March 15, 1848. They have three children, Aura, Maggie, and Bertha.

ALEXANDER J CONRAD was born in Switzerland, January 4, 1830, and came to Allen County in 1851, with his parents, John and Elizabeth Conrad, whose children are John, Jacob and Alexander. His wife was born in Switzerland, November 8, 1833. Their children are Elizabeth, Emma, Alexander, John, Jacob, Lena, Henry and an infant. Mrs. C. is a daughter of John and Elizabeth Baumgartner, whose children are John, Benedick, Elizabeth, Mary and Annie.

SAMUEL B DAVIS, publisher of the "Bluffton Standard," was born at Lafayette, Indiana, August 28, 1840. His wife was born at Poughkeepsie, N. Y., June 18, 1843. They have one child, Bessie. Mr. D.'s parents are George W. and Ann Davis. He has one brother, Geo. W. Davis, and one sister, Lydia J. Mrs. D. was Mary Myers. Her parents, John B. and Phoebe H. Myers, have five children, James W., Mary, John S., Julia and Joseph F.

PETER DILLER, of the firm of Diller & Lugibihl, hardware merchants at Bluffton, was born in Putnam County, September 14, 1847. His parents, Peter and Barbara Diller, were formerly from Holmes County, and have a family of eight children, Christian, Adam, John, Benjamin, Peter, David, Magdalena and Mary.

MARTHA JANE FECHLER was born in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, Feb. 16, 1826. Her parents are Joseph Garee, born Jan. 13, 1800, and Elizabeth, born Dec. 19, 1803. By her first marriage Mrs. F. has two children, Solomon and Joseph Arnold. Her second husband was Mr. Feckler, a son of Samuel and Susan Feckler. He was born in York County, Pennsylvania, Nov. 7, 1807. Their children are Philip, Samuel, Cass, Margaret, Isaac, Elmer and Ellsworth (twins), Barbara E. and Henderson Feckler. Names of Mrs. Feckler's brothers and sisters--Sarah, Elizabeth, Rosanna, Margaret, Henry, William, John, and Rachel Garee. Samuel and Susan Feckler's children are Samuel, Sarah, Lydia, George, Peter, Eve, Simon and Margaret.

JOHN FRANKS was born in Hancock County in 1834. His parents, Michael and Priscilla Franks, had five children--John, David, Elisha, Benjamin, Mary R., and Elizabeth. His wife, a daughter of Thomas and Nancy Evans, was born in Trumbull County. They have three children. Mr. Franks has held the office of constable.

EUGENE GARAUX, son of David and Philistine Garaux, was born in Switzerland, May 9, 1837. His wife, daughter of John and Elizabeth Peter, was born in Switzerland, February 22, 1843. They have one child, Emile. Mr. Garaux came to Allen County in 1862; his parents came in 1869, and her parents in 1852. He has one brother, William, and three sisters--Emile, Julia and Josephine. His wife is one of a family of seven--Elise, Marian, Frederick, Henry, Charles, Emile and Mary.

GEORGE W GOBLE, son of Daniel and [illegible], and brother of Ebenezer, John, Jane, Doud, and Josephus, was born in Washington County, Penn., March 20, 1819, and at the age of 15 came with his parents to Allen County. He married [illegible] Alison, who was born in Muskingum County, Sept. 21, 1826. Her parents, Alexander and Nancy Alison, came from Zanesville to this county in 1833. The children of George W. and [illegible] Goble are Ebenezer B., Allen B., Martha, Jane and Charles. Mrs. Goble's brothers and sisters are Alexander, Mary, Margaret J., Sarah, Julia, Ann, Robert, Alvira, and Samantha. Mr. Goble has held the offices of county commissioner, justice of the peace, township clerk and constable, and was the first postmaster in the township. His father was one of the first justices of the peace, and he and Mr. De Ford owned the first horses that were brought into the township. De Ford owned the first saw mill and grist mill in the township. When water failed the grist mill was run by horse-power.

REV. JOHN GOBLE is a son of Daniel L and Elizabeth Goble, who came to this county from Pennsylvania in 1834. Their children are, Ebenezer, John, George, Jane, Doud, and Josephus. John was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, April 5, 1817, and came to Allen County in 1835. His wife, Sarah Jane, daughter of Jesse and Mary Ann Davis, was born in Harrison County, August 16, 1831. His children are, Thaddeus L., Algernon Doud, Robert I., Susan Jane, Daniel and Calvin.

DAVID HARNER, JR., son of David and Lucetta Harner, was born in Center County, Pennsylvania, September 2, 1851, and came with his parents to this county, in 1872. The names of his brothers and sisters are Margaret, Jacob, Mary J., Catherine, Elizabeth and Joseph.

ANDREW HAUENSTEIN was born Jan. 19, 1844, at Degerfelden, Switzerland, and in 1856 came with his parents, Henry and Fanny Hauenstein, from Switzerland to Allen County, Ohio. His wife was born in this township March 18, 1851. She was Barbara Steiner, and is sister to David Steiner, and daughter of Christian and Barbara. Mr. Haunstein [sic] has two brothers, John and William, and two sisters, Emma and Fanny. Mr. H. has held the office of township clerk.

SIMON HERR was born at Bluffton, in this county, on the 17th of April, 1851. His parents, Christian and Catharina Herr, are from Europe. Their children are John, Fannie, Catharine, Christian, Simon, Peter, David and Annie. Mr. Herr's wife is a daughter of Darius and Fanny Musser.

WILLIAM HUBER is a native of Wurtemburg, Germany. In 1835, at the age of 17, he came to Allen County with his parents, Frederick and Barbara Huber. His brothers and sisters are Charles, Jacob, Theresa, Henry and Caroline. His wife was born in England in 1824. She is a daughter of Edward and Emily Austin, and is one of a family of nine--Emily, Mary A., Margaret, Sarah, Eliza, Charlotte, George, John, and Lenora. Mr. Huber has eleven children--Lewis W., Eli, Erastus, Mary, E---, Nancy, Oscar, Clermont, Alice E., Ida A., and Sally A. Mr. Huber has been township trustee fourteen years.

LEWIS HUFFMAN was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, December 25, 1817, and removed to Allen County in 1848. His wife was Anna Stewart, daughter of Robert and Anna Stewart. She was born in Licking County, December 20, 1830. Their children are, Sarah A., Elizabeth A., Frank A., Guy S., Kate L., Mary J., and Lulu. By his first marriage, Mr. Huffman has two children--Scott F. and John W. Mr. Huffman has three brothers and two sisters--David, Samuel, Lydia, Hannah, and William. Mrs. Huffman is one of a family of ten--George, Jacob, Elizabeth, Anna, John, Angeline, Ruth, Lavina, Virgil, and Benjamin.

LEWIS JENNINGS was born June 20, 1828, in Tuscarawas County, and came to Allen County in 1836, with his parents, James and Elizabeth Jennings. His wife, Mary Ann, is a daughter of Martin and Margaret Everett. She was born in this county on the 9th of September, 1845. Her father came from Carroll County in 1838. Her mother is from Trumbull County. She has a brother, Aaron Everett. Children of James and Elizabeth Jennings: Lucinda, Lewis, Reason, Adaline, Thomas, Abel, John and Sarah. Lewis and Mary Ann Jennings have nine children: Hiram L., James B., Ann, John M., Francis M., Benjamin F., Alfred, Clara and Edith. Mr. Jennings says: "My parents came from Pennsylvania to Ohio when they were children. My father is 76, my mother 75 years old; both are now living in this county. My grandfather, Gideon Jennings, died in this county at the age of 75; his wife lived to the age of 96. My mother's father, Abel Williams, and her mother, both lived 87 years. I recollect when this part of the country was all a wilderness. Hauled wheat to Freemont in 1840."

ALFRED G KIBLER, boot and shoe merchant at Bluffton, was born in Crawford County, July 6, 1844. His wife was born in Trumbull County, October 28, 1845. They have two sons, Milton M. and Aaron B. Mr. K.'s parents, Christian and Hannah, have three children: Comfort, Nelson and Alfred G. Mrs. K. was Arinthia J. Murray, daughter of Thomas and Julia Murray. She has three sisters and two brothers: Florence, Alexander, Cynthia, William and Margaret.

ANDREW KOHLI, brother of Josiah, Samuel, Isaac, Eli, Christian, Daniel, Emanuel, Caroline, Elizabeth and Sarah, and son of John and Fanny Kohli, was born in this county, March 10, 1845--the same year in which his parents removed from Richland County. His wife was born in Wayne County, February 6, 1848. She is a daughter of John Catharine Zulliger, and is one of a family of eight children--Samuel, John, William, Daniel, Annie, Mary, Catharine and Martha. They have one child, Albert.

A V LAMBERT, merchant at Bluffton, was born in Knox County, July 20, 1831. His wife was born February 10, 1844. Mr. Lambert is one of a family of fifteen. Their names are, Daniel, Jacob, Sarah, James Madison, Susan, John, Elizabeth, Francis Lawson, Nancy, Joseph, Nahum, Caroline, Samuel, Curtice and A. V., children of Francis and Elizabeth Lambert. Mrs. Lambert's parents, Jacob and Elizabeth Brollier, came from Hancock County, in 1872. They have eight children, Levi, William, Sarah, Elizabeth, Jacob, Hester, Jeremiah and Richard. Mr. Lambert has four children: Uretta Velomine, Curtis G., Maggie L., and Charles Burr.

OLIVER S LANGAN, son of Thomas and Anna Langan, was born at Dunkineely, County Donegal, Ireland, Dec. 10th, 1839. He married E. Ella Mungen, daughter of William and Marietta Mungen, of Findley, Ohio. They have two children, Willie T., and Belle M., aged respectively 7 and 4 years. Mrs. Langan was born at Findlay, July 26, 1846.

ADAM D LUGIBIHL, of the firm of Diller & Lugibihl, Bluffton, is a son of Christian and Barbara Lugibihl, who came from the province of Alsace, then a part of France. They have nine children, John, Magdalena, David, Catharine, Elizabeth, Christian, Adam, Barbara and Mary. Adam was born in Putnam County, August 24, 1848. He married Emma R., daughter of James I. and Susan K. Reed, whose children are Jane, Elizabeth, Samantha, John, Mary, Edson, Ida, Ella and Emma. Mrs. L. was born in Hancock County, November 18, 1855.

CYRUS MARSHALL was born in Lawrence County Pennsylvania, June 22d, 1826, and came to Allen County in 1851. His wife was born in Mahoning County, Ohio, Dec. 24th, 1826. Their children are John R., Albert H., James H. (deceased), and Margaret Alice (deceased). Mr. M. is a son of James H. and Jane Marshall, whose children are Robt. P., John, Margaret, James H., William L., Joseph, Jane, Elizabeth, and George. Mrs. M. is Mary, daughter of Samuel and Margaret Reed, whose children are Elizabeth, William, John, George, Samuel, Mary, Margaret, Nancy J., Harvey and Barnabas.

AMOS N McBRIDE was born in Knox County, October 16, 1848. He married Almira E Shugart, daughter of Geo. F. and Eliza Shugart. She was born in Fairfield County, November 30, 1848. She has one brother, George Shugart. Mr. McBride's parents are David and Emeline McBride. He has a brother, Henry, and two sisters--Florence and Nellie. Amos N. and Almira McBride have two children, Arthur G. and Gertrude A.

JOSEPH A MURRAY, was born in Pennsylvania, November 22, 1821. His parents are John F. and Charity Murray, whose children are, Charity, Thomas, Joseph A., William P., James, John, Mary Ann, Alexander K., George, Caroline and Robert. Mr. Murray's first wife was the mother of eight children--Robert, George, John, Josiah, Erastus, Marion, Joseph and William. His second wife had eight children--Rosella, Emma, Jane, Loyd, Monroe, Meadlow, Horace and Lillie. Mrs. Murray is distinguished for giving birth to five boys within a period of eighteen months--four sons at a single birth.

PETER OBERLY was born in Wayne County, on the 3d of September, 1848. His wife was born in the same county, in the same year, and on the 5th day of the same month. They have two children--Levi Amos and William Henry. Mr. O.'s parents are Peter and Susan Oberly. His wife is a daughter of Peter and Anna Garber.

PROF. EDWIN PHIFER, Superintendent of Schools at Bluffton, was born at Findlay, Ohio.

WILLIAM B RICHARDS--The children of William B. and Phoebe (Swartz) Richards are Maggie Belle, Carrie, and Edward Thornton Richards. Mr. R. was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, Feb. 28, 1838. His parents are George N. and Margaret Richards. Mrs. Richards is a daughter of Henry and Margaret Swartz. She was born at Canal Dover, Ohio, July 4, 1846.

HENRY L ROMEY and his wife are both natives of Canton B�rne, Switzerland. Mr. R. was born October 19, 1843--his wife, December 16, 1851. They have two children, both born at Bluffton, in this county: Elizabeth, January 13, 1873; Caroline, February 18, 1875. Mr. R.'s parents, Henry and Elizabeth, have four children--Henry, Julius, Edward and Rosette. Mrs. Romey was Rosanna K�hne, daughter of John and Barbara K�hne, and sister of Frederick, Gottlieb and Alexander K�hne. The two families, Romey and K�hne, came together from Switzerland, in 1854. On their way, their money and bedding was lost or stolen. Rosette Romey was accidently killed on the railroad, near Rochester, New York.

JOHN SHIFFERLY, brother of Jacob and Barbara, was born at Degenfelden, Switzerland, May 28, 1819. His parents, Jacob and Barbara Shifferly, came to America in 1833, and settled in Allen County in 1836. His wife is a daughter of Jacob and Mary Schwartz, who came from Wurtemburg, Germany, to Pennsylvania, in 1847. They afterwards removed from Pennsylvania to Hancock County, Ohio. Mrs. S. was born in the village of Fehringen, Wurtemburg, on the 21st Oct. 1829. She is one of seven children--Christina, John, Eva, Jacob, Frederick, Mary and William. Mr. and Mrs. John Shifferly have eight children living--Gideon, John, Jacob, Mary, William, Frederick, Sarah and Margaret,--and three dead, Jacob, Mary Ann and William. Mr. S. has held the office of Supervisor and School Director.

JOSEPH SHULL was born in Wayne County, July 4, 1833. In 1845 he came with his parents, Frederick and Catharine Shull, to the county. He married a daughter of Hector and Elizabeth Carlisle, who had seven children,--Margaret Ann, Mary Jane, Martha, Ann, John, David, William, and Charles. Mr. Shull's brothers and sisters are Jacob, John, James, Jackson, Frederick, Charles, Elizabeth, Catharine, Margaret, Sarah and Charlotte. His children are Hector, Frederick, Catharine, Elizabeth, and Howard. Mr. Shull has held the office of justice of the peace.

DAVID STEINER's parents, Christian and Barbara Steiner, came from Wayne County in 1837. David was born in this township, Jan. 25, 1843. He married Mary Schaller, whose parents, John and Elizabeth Schaller, came to this county in 1870, from Switzerland, where Mary was born, May 25, 1850. Mrs. S. has one brother, John, and one sister, Elizabeth. The names of Mr. Steiner's brothers and sisters are Elias, Gideon, Isaac, Peter, Mary, Noah, Barbara, John and Fanny. David and Mary Steiner have two children, Albert Henry and Armin Theodore. Mr. S. has held the office of treasurer.

GIDEON STEINER is a son of Christian and Barbara Steiner. Elizabeth, his wife, is a daughter of John and Anna Haas. Mr. Steiner was born in Richland County, May 14, 1841, and was brought to Allen County by his parents when he was about one year old. Mrs. Steiner was born in Crawford County, July 2, 1847. Their children are, Mary Ellen, Robert Edward Lee, and Alice May. Mr. Steiner is one of a family of ten children--Elias, Gideon, David, Isaac, Peter, Mary, Barbara, Noah, John and Fanny. Mr. Steiner has been Township Treasurer.

JOHN STUDER is a native of Switzerland. He was born in the canton of Berneon the 25th of Dec., 1829. His parents, John and Maria, have four children--John, Mary, Catharine and Elizabeth. His wife, Anna (deceased), was the only child of Christian and Anna Beckler. She was born in Switzerland on the 30th of Nov., 1833. They have one child, John Studer.

JAMES M WOODS was born in Brown County, August 9, 1819, and came to Allen County in 1828. His wife was born in Cuyahoga County, July 21, 1823. Their children are, Eliza Ann, Mary Rosella, Mary Jane, Matilda Abby, Anna, and Sally A. Mr. Woods' parents are Tobias and Mary Woods. Names of his brothers and sisters: Matilda, Martin, Abby, Betsey, Margaret, Sally Ann, John and Martha. Mrs. Woods is a daughter of Simeon and Eliza Bentley, and is one of a family of four--Sally, Permelia, Alvira and Gould. Mrs. Woods' parents came from Cuyahoga County in 1841.

JOHN WOODS, son of Tobias and Mary Woods, was born in Brown County, November 9, 1821, and came to this county with his parents in 1828. His first wife was a daughter of Frederick and Catharine Shull, who in 1845 came from Wayne County, where she was born March 17, 1831. His second wife is a daughter of James and Elizabeth Jennings, who came from Tuscarawas County in 1837. Names of Mr. Woods' brothers and sisters: Matilda, Martin, Abby, Margaret, Elizabeth, Sallie Ann, James M., and Martha. Names of children of John Woods and his first wife: Martin H., William R., Joseph O., Josephine, Francis M., Emma and Ulyssus. Names of his children with second wife: Nancy, Clark, William, Elizabeth, Rezin, John Wesley, Samuel, Alvin, Alice C., Silas, and Margaret Ann.

DR. S S YODER, of Bluffton, was born in Holmes County, August 16, 1841. His wife was born in the same county, September 12, 1851. They have had two children, both deceased. Dr. Yoder's parents, Yost and Nancy Yoder, have eleven children: Rachel, Tina, Mary, Noah, Elizabeth, Samuel, S. S., Moses, Catharine, Jacob, Annie and Jocelyn. Mrs. Yoder is a daughter of Abner Maxwell, whose children are Belle, Manewa E., Samuel, Miller and Ada. Dr. Y. is a member of the town Council, of Bluffton.
