Personal Histories of Allen County, Ohio -- 1875
SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP We are indebted to Mr. Wm. Rusler, township clerk, for the following sketch of the history of Shawnee township:
ABRAHAM BOYD, son of Henry Boyd and Margaret (Beer) Boyd, was born in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, on the 4th of May, 1810. His wife, Maria Belinda, daughter of Ezekiel Hover and Sallie (Adgate) Hover, was born in Trumbull County, Dec. 15, 1809. They have four children--Henry Ezekiel, Sallie Columbia, Margaret Ann, and Mary Belinda. Mr. B. has a sister, Mary, and three brothers--James, John and Henry F. Their parents came to Ohio in 1812, and to Allen County in 1862. Abraham came to this county in 1837. Mrs. B.'s parents came to the county in 1833. Their children are, Emanuel, Maria B., Sarah, St. Clair, Charles A., Newton, Columbia, and William U. Hover. Mr. Boyd has served as Trustee and Member of the Board of Education. DAVID M BREESE, son of Griffith and Mary Breese, was born in Butler County, in 1825, and came to this county with his parents, in 1832. He is a brother of Nancy, George, John, William and Griffith. His wife was born in Champaign County, in 1827, and in 1832 came to this county with her parents, Crane and Mary Valentine, whose children are Joanna, Emily, Hamilton, Joseph, Mary, Jane, Julius and Juliet, Maria and Nettie. Mr. Breese was two children living, Ella and George L. The third, Emmet, died in 1866. WM D BREESE was born in Butler County in 1823, and at the age of nine was brought to this county by his parents, Griffith and Mary Breese. He married Ellen Yoakum, daughter of Solomon and Ruth Yoakum. She was born in Knox County in the year 1832, and in 1840 came with her parents to Allen County. Mrs. Breese died February 2, 1860. They have but one child, Griffith Alva Breese. Children of Griffith and Mary Breese: Nancy, George, John, William D., David M., and Griffith. Children of Solomon and Ruth Yoakum: William, James, Cyrus, Delila, Sarah, Ellen and Drusilla. Mr. Breese has lived on the same farm since 1832. He has held the offices of Township Clerk and Treasurer. ABRAHAM CRIDER was born in Pickaway County in 1828, and his wife, Mary (Garling) Crider, was born in the same year, in Fairfield County. Names of their children--John Franklin, Francis Ephraim, George W. and Wm. Edward, Lena Catharine, Flora C., Mary Adeline, Maggie M. and Hattie Vantalia. Mr. Crider's parents, Ephraim and Mary M., are living in Auglaize County. They have eight children--Isaac, Abraham, Hannah, Maria, Reuben, Leanna, Susan and John. Mrs. Crider is a daughter of John and Catharine Garling, and is one of a family of six children--Jeremiah, Solomon, William, Daniel, Mary, and John J. Mr. Crider held the office of Treasurer five years. THOMAS W DOBBINS, and his wife, Sarah Jane (Fenn) Dobbins, were both born at Poland, Mahoning County. They have six children--Olive, Clara Jane, William F., Joseph G., Thomas A., and Emma E. Mr. Dobbins has a sister, Mary E., and two brothers, Joseph and Cyrus. Mrs. D. has a brother, George Fenn, and three sisters, Eliza, Maria, and Jane E. Mr. Dobbins was born April 26, 1834, and came to this county in 1863. His parents, Joseph and Jane Dobbins, came in 1866. His wife was born in September, 1838. Her parents, William and Charlotte Fenn, came to Allen County in 1863. Mr. D. has held the office of Justice of the Peace one term. ALVA F HOVER, son of Chas. A. and Adaline D., was born in this county, July 13, 1852. His wife is Anna R., daughter of Jacob and Catharine Nye, who came from Fairfield County, in 1841. Mrs. Hover was born in this county, Oct. 18, 1853, and is one of a family of seven children--John, St. Clair, Martha, Maggie, Cyrus, Susie and Anna. Mr. Hover's parents came from Trumbull County, in 1833, and have seven children--Sarah, Nora, Jesse, Ezekiel, Hart and Charles D. JAMES A HOVER was born in Trumbull County in 1828, and in 1833 came with his parents, Joseph and Caroline, to Allen County. His wife was born in Wayne County in 1830, and in 1834 was brought to this county by her parents, Matthew and Elizabeth Dobbins, whose children are, John, Hugh, Martha, Joseph and Nancy. Mr. Hover's brothers and sisters are, Josiah, Joshua, Matilda E., Cyrus, William, Oscar and Adgate. His children are, Ida, Alma, Cyrus and Clinton. Mr. Hover has held the office of Township Trustee and School Director. NEWTON HOVER, son of Ezekiel and Sarah (Adgate) Hover, was born in Trumbull County, Dec. 20, 1820, and came with his parents, in 1833, to Allen County. His wife was born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, April 7, 1825. Their children are Clara and Laura (twins), Ella Virginia, Hulda Maria, Newton Greenberry, Frank and Joseph. Mrs. Hover is Mary Ann, daughter of George and Catharine Kennedy. WM U HOVER--In 1833, Joseph and Caroline Hover removed with their family from Trumbull County to Allen County. Their children are Josiah, Adgate, Elizabeth, Joshua, Cyrus, Oscar, William and James. William was then about eight years old, as he was born June 25, 1825. His wife was born in Harrison County, September 29, 1826. Their children are, Sarah C., Joseph O., Thomas L., Mary L., Flora B., William E., Lydia M., and Frank B. Mrs. Hover is Mary J., daughter of Thomas and Sarah Milligan, who came from Union County, in 1844, and whose children are, Maria, Belle, Lydia, Joseph, William, Thomas, Emma, Albert, Amanda and Mary J. Mr. Hover has been Township Trustee. JAMES MCBETH was born in Scotland, Oct. 10, 1827. His parents, James and Jane, both died in Scotland. He has one sisters and one brother--Jeannette and Alexander. His wife was Eliza R. Osbun, daughter of William and Martha, and sister of William Osbun. She was born in Virginia, Oct. 5, 1822. They have two children, Alexander William and James Osbun McBeth. Mr. McB. is one of the County Commissioners. WILLIAM NAPIER, only son of Joseph and Rebecca, was born in New York, in 1817, and came to Allen County in 1843. Mrs. N. was born in Trumbull County in 1818. Following are the names of their living children, with the year in which each was born: Adelia E. (1841), Harriet B. (1843), H. H. (1845), Susan (1847), Hillery C. (1849), Sarah (1854), and Mary (1862); and the following are the names of deceased children: Adelia (1839), Amanda (1851), Charley (1858). Mrs. Napier is a daughter of Adam and Anne Huff, whose children are Jesse, Elizabeth, Peter, Sarah, Susan, Mary and Samuel Huff. Mrs. N.'s father died in Pennsylvania; her mother is living in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Mr. Napier is a Justice of the Peace. WILLIAM RUSLER, born in this township, 17th of March, 1851, is a son of Philip and Elizabeth, and brother of David Rusler. He married Anna, daughter of Chas. and Mary J. McClintock, of Auglaize County, where she was born, Feb. 3, 1853. Mr. Rusler's parents came to Allen County from Trumbull County, in 1848. Mr. R. is township clerk. SAMUEL ZURMEHLY was his wife, Catharine Jane (Brook) Zurmehly, are both natives of Pennsylvania. They have seven children--Mary E., John W., Eliza J., Wilson S., Peter F., Charles L. and Ida B. Mr. Z.'s parents, John C. Zurmehly and Susanna (Shofner) Zurmehly, died in Pickaway County. They had nine children--Robert, Frederick, Samuel, Jacob, John, Amos, Susan, Peter and Mary. Mr. Z. was born in 1822, and came to this county in 1846. Mrs. Z. was born in 1824. Her father, James Brook, died in Pennsylvania. Her mother, Mary (Craft) Brook, died in Allen County. Mrs. Z. has two brothers--Thomas and Samuel Brook, and two sisters--Susan and Elizabeth. Information transcribed from the Historical Atlas of Allen County, Ohio.
