Personal Histories of Allen County, Ohio -- 1875
SUGAR CREEK TOWNSHIP J W BUSSERT's parents, Adam and Hannah, came from Fairfield County, in 1834. Their children are Nancy, Elizabeth, Jane and John. His wife is a daughter of David S. and Terzah Young, who came from Fairfield County, in 1835, and whose children are Rachel Ann, Elmer, Margaret, Sarah and Caroline. Mr. and Mrs. Bussert are both natives of Allen County. He was born Oct. 25, 1836--she, Jan. 20, 1844. The residence of Mr. B.'s father was burned down in 1850, all contents destroyed. The old log house in which Mr. B. was born was so low that adult persons were compelled to stoop in walking through the room. When a boy, had to go fifty miles to mill, and sometimes obliged to wait for the grist six or seven days. EBENEZER DAVIS, son of Henry and Mary Davis, was born in this township, on the 1st of September, 1844. His father came to this county in 1832, from Pennsylvania. His mother came from Butler County, Ohio. They have six children--Jane, Elizabeth, Mary Ann, Margaret, Silas, and Ebenezer. His wife was born at Utica, N. Y., in June, 1843. Her parents, Edward and Sarah Morris, are from North Wales. They came to Allen County in 1855. Their children are Jane, Thomas, John, Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary, Annie, Harriet, and William. DR. JOHN DAVIS was born in Cincinnati, July 31, 1837, and in 1848 came to this county with his parents, Ebenezer and Margaret Davis, whose children are John, Ebenezer, Elizabeth, William, Edward, Martha Ann and Benjamin. Dr. Davis has held the office of township clerk. JOHN D EDWARDS was born in this township, October 16, 1841. His parents, Thomas and Anna Edwards, came to this county in 1839, from Cincinnati. They were originally from North Wales. Mrs. Edwards is a daughter of Jenkin and Mary Jones, who came from South Wales in 1839, and whose children are William, Jonathan, Mary Ann, Evan, and Elizabeth. JOHN EVANS and his wife are natives of Caermarthenshire, South Wales. He was born June 10th, 1810--she in Oct., 1805. They have six children living (See J. P. Williams). Mr. E. is a son of Timothy and Ann Evans, and brother of Benjamin, David, Daniel, Elizabeth, Mary and Evan Evans. Mrs. Evans was Mary Bynon, daughter of Evan and Sarah Bynon, and sister of Esther, Ann, Margaret and Elizabeth. When Mr. Evans and his family first came to this county (1843), they lived in a temporary log hut, sleeping on the floor, and subsisting principally on corn bread baked on a board before a log fire. Wild deer were so plentiful that they often came into enclosures and fed with the domestic animals. The howling of wolves could be heard every night. Went to St. Marys or Sidney to mill, and to Toledo for salt. There was very little money in circulation, and no markets. Butter was worth four cents a pound, wheat forty cents a bushel, corn twelve cents, cows $8 a head, horses $40, and wages twenty-five cents a day and in harvest time fifty cents or one bushel of wheat. WILLIAM R EVANS and his wife are natives of South Wales, G. B. Their children are Ellen, John (deceased), Alice, Silas, Charlotte (deceased), Isabella, Amos, and Harriet. Mr. Evans is a son of Thomas and Ellen Evans, still residing in South Wales, and whose children are John, Mary (Mrs. L. Lewis), William R., Winifred, David, the Rev. Evan Evans (deceased), Ellen (Mrs. Oliver), and Margaret (deceased). Mrs. Evans was Mary Jones, daughter of John and Anna Jones, who died in South Wales. She has a brother, John Jones. ELLIS FRANCIS, son of Francis and Catharine, and brother of Hugh F., Margaret, John and Mary, was born in North Wales, Nov. 13, 1806. His wife is a daughter of Owen and Ursilla Jones, whose children are Richard, Evan, Ann, Griffith and William. Mrs. F. was born in North Wales, in August, 1817. BENJAMIN GRIFFITHS is a son of Joseph and Jane, and brother of Joseph, Elenor, Mary, Evan and Ebenezer Griffiths. He was born in Butler County in 1829, and came to Allen County in 1836 with his parents. "In those days the nearest grain markets were at Lake Erie and the Ohio River; therefore farmers raised barely grain enough to supply their families with bread and salt. There was a water mill on Hog Creek, but when the water was low we had to go to Sidney, or Piqua, to mill. There was plenty of wild game." Mrs. Griffiths was Julia Ann Aumspaucher, born in Fairfield County, 1830. They have eight children--Vincent (deceased), Isaac Newton (deceased), Jason M., Ida C., Herbert G. (deceased), Sarah Jane, Josephine and Henderson F. Mrs. G. is a daughter of George and Rebecca Aumspaucher, whose children are Mahala, Julia Ann, Clara, John, Samuel and Jessie. REV. DAVID JONES, Congregational minister, son of David and Hannah Jones, was born in South Wales, September 15, 1823. His wife, Elizabeth, daughter of Robert and Mary Roberts, was born in South Wales, July 22, 1824. She has a brother, Benjamin Roberts. Mr. Jones is a brother of John, Ann, Francis, James, and Margaret. ISRAEL JONES, is a son of John and Elizabeth Jones. He was born Dec. 25, 1828, in Montgomeryshire, North Wales, where his father died, and where his mother still lives. His wife (deceased) was Mary, daughter of Josiah and Mary Jones. She was born in Llanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire, North Wales, April 29th, 1837. They have no children. Mr. Jones has one brother, Thomas. JOSIAH JONES and Mary (Hughes) Jones, his wife, are natives of Llanbrynmair, Montgomeryshire, North Wales, Great Britain. He was born July 4th, 1807--she in Aug., 1809. Their children are Thomas, Henry, Mary M. (deceased), Anna C., Josiah E., Martha E., Margaret L., and G. Llewelyn. Mr. Jones' parents are Josiah and Mary. He has four sisters--Lydia, Margaret, Mary and Martha. Mrs. Jones is a daughter of Thomas and Catharine Hughes. She has a brother, Thomas, and two sisters, Elizabeth and Ann. DR. RICHARD E JONES is a native of North Wales. In the year 1848 he came to Allen County with his parents, William and Mary Jones. Dr. Jones has been township treasurer, and member of the House of Representatives. REV. MICHAEL MARTZ was born in Rockingham County, Virginia, January 8, 1807. His wife was born in the same county November 1, 1808, and in that county their parents lived and died. Mr. and Mrs. Martz came to Allen County in 1836, and in 1840 he was ordained a minister of the Gospel. Mr. Martz. was one of the first Christian ministers in the county, and is now the oldest in the county. He organized the first church in Cairo, and in Vaughnsville, Putnam County. Their children are Isaac W., George W., Mary M., James A., Thomas B., Sarah C., Eliza A., B. Franklin and Silas H. (who died in the army). Mr. Martz' parents were Michael and Sarah, and their children are John, Hiram (deceased), Dorilus (deceased), Mary, Martha, Michael, Benjamin H., Napoleon B., Clara Ann (deceased), Rebecca (deceased), Erastus and Jackson. Mrs. M.'s parents were George and Mary M. Huff, whose children are John (deceased), George, Catharine (deceased), Daniel (deceased), Sarah and Jacob. HENRY MOLLENHOUR, was born in Fairfield County, Nov. 24th, 1811. His wife was born in the State of New Jersey, July 13th, 1813. They have eight children--Joseph, Daniel, John, Sarah, George W., Frederick W., Phoebe and Christian. Mr. M. is a son of Ernst and Elizabeth Mollenhour, and is a brother of Frederick, Lewis and Augustus. Mrs. M. is a daughter of Daniel and Phoebe Kitchen. She has four brothers--Joseph, Isaac, Wilson and Daniel Kitchen. Mr. Mollenhour has held the office of justice of the peace. JAMES NICHOLAS, son of James and Mary Nicholas, was born in Butler County, September 6, 1810. His wife was born in the same year, in Montgomeryshire, North Wales. Their children are Jane, James, Richard (deceased), David D. and Martha Ann. Mr. N. has three sisters--Martha, Sarah and Ann. Mrs. N. has two sisters--Elizabeth and Martha. She was Mary Jones, daughter of Richard and Jane Jones. Mr. A.'s [sic] parents were from South Wales. They came into Allen County in 1835. Mr. Nicholas came in 1833. At that time there were only thirty-seven voters in a territory since carved into four townships. Inhabitants were obliged to go fifty miles to mill, and a hundred miles to market. Mr. Nicholas has been justice of the peace for forty years. CHARLES M SHOEMAKER, son of Daniel and Sophia, and brother of Charles, Joseph, Jacob, Emily, Malinda, Daniel, George, Noah, Mary Ann, Andrew and Abraham, was born in Fairfield County, Oct. 8th, 1824, and came to Allen County in 1846. His wife is a daughter of Jacob and Rachel Lakemiller (see Andrew Stemen). She was born in Fairfield County, Sept. 4th, 1829. Mr. S. has held the office of assessor, and was township trustee seven years. In 1861, on the 20th of July, his house and shop with contents of both, were destroyed by fire. Mr. Shoemaker thinks that the jolliest time he ever had was at a religious meeting held in the old meeting house, which stood on the old fair ground, a mile south of Lima. Stuckey was the preacher, and Bowersox led the singing, while some dozen of the congregation were "tight as bricks." ANDREW STEMEN was born in Fairfield County, December 31, 1825, and came to this county with his parents in 1838. His wife was born in Fairfield County May 20, 1827. Andrew is a son of Peter and Mary Stemen, who had six children--Andrew, Benjamin, Magdalina, Elizabeth, Isaac and Christian. Mrs. S. is a daughter of Jacob and Rachel Lakemiller, who came from Fairfield County in 1830, and whose children are John, Andrew, Jacob, Elizabeth, Daniel, Benjamin, Jane, Rebecca and Sampson. JOSEPH THOMAS was born in South Wales, Sept. 2, 1834, and came to Allen County, in 1842, with his parents, John and Elizabeth Thomas. He has eight brothers--John, William, Howell, James, David, Evan, Lewis and Morris. His wife is a daughter of Morris F. and Mary F. Jones, who came to this county in the year 1846, from Butler County, where Mrs. Thomas was born, July 22, 1843. Mrs. Thomas is one of a family of six--Sarah, John, Elizabeth, Richard, David and Benjamin. Mr. Thomas has been constable and school director. J P WILLIAMS, son of Benjamin and Jane Williams, and brother of Robert, William, Jane, Evan, Richard, and Benjamin, is a native of North Wales. His wife was born in South Wales, April 16th, 1839, and in 1843 was brought to Allen County by her parents, John and Mary Evans. Mrs. W. is one of a family of six--Ann, Rachel, Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah and Thomas. Information transcribed from the Historical Atlas of Allen County, Ohio.
