35. "PROVINCES: The four provinces of Ireland-Ulster, Leinster, Munster, and Connaught-take their names from four of the ancient kingdoms of Ireland-Uladh, Laighean, Mumha, and Connacht.

"COUNTIES: Twelve counties were created in 1210 by King John, and others followed in the reigns of Mary I and Elizabeth I. There are 32 counties in the whole of Ireland, of which six are in Northern Ireland and the rest in Eire.

"BARONIES: This division goes back to the mists of early Irish history and is based on Gaelic family holdings. There are 325 baronies in all Ireland. They were turned into civil divisions by the English in the 19th century for the purpose of land valuation.

"PARISHES: These are of two kinds-ecclesiastical and civil. The civil parish was used for land valuations, was usually smaller than the ecclesiastical one, and often had a different name. There are about 2,500 ecclesiastical parishes in the whole country.

"TOWNLANDS: This is a small rural section of a parish. Its average area ia 350 acres. There are just over 60,000 of these townlands in all Ireland.

"POOR LAW UNIONS: In 1838 the whole country was divided into districts, or Unions, in which the local rate-payers were made financially responsible for the care of all the poor or starving people in the area. In the years of the great potato famine the numbers of people involved were considerable. The Poor Law Union covered an average area of ten miles' radius from thr Poor House, which was usually located in a market town."
