Nicholas Teachman, b. ca 1755

Many Teachmans lived in south-
central Orange County in
Warwick Township.

Little is known about this Nicholas Teachman other than what can be gleened from the 1800, 1810 and 1820 Federal Census records. We do not even know where in Warwick Township he lived. We do know, however, that a number of Teachmans had ties to Long Pond, now called Greenwood Lake, the long, narrow lake which straddles the New Jersey - New York border.

From the 1800 census, Nicholas, probably the oldest male in the household, is 45 years of age or older setting his birth year at 1755 or before. Since it is believed the Teachmans came to America in about 1745, it is very likely Nicholas, b. 1755, is a son of one of the original brothers. The three males were probably born between about 1774 and 1785. The three females were born between 1775 and 1784. They are of an age where they would be leaving home and starting their own lives.

In the 1810 census the dynamics of the household have changed a good deal. The family now probably consists of three generations. Nicholas and his wife, of course, are still over 45. Next are a male and female between 26 and 44, born between 1766 and 1784. One of the partners in this couple could have been living at home in the 1800 census - except for the two children between the ages of 10 and 15, born between 1795 and 1800. There are three additional children born after 1800. These five young children are most likely the grandchildren of Nicholas.

The makeup of the household again has some major changes between 1810 and 1820. The head of the household is still Nicholas and, because of the nature of the early censuses, his age can only be guessed. He could be 45, or he could be 65 or 70 which would be reflective of the earlier censuses. There continues to be a number of younger children in the house: 2 males under 10, born between 1810 and 1820; 3 males between 10 and 16, born between 1804 and 1810; 1 female under 10 and 1 female between 10 and 16. Possibly the grandparents became caretakers of children whose parents died or in some way couldn't take care of them or possibly the older children helped take care of the house or farm, if the household was located on a farm.

There are a number of Teachman's with ties to Orange County whose parents are unknown (see miscelleanous Teachmans). Some have birth dates which coincide with dates on the above 1800, 1810 and 1820 census records. However, further research and evidence is needed to make any positive connections.
