The family:
William Pogemiller, b. 28 Dec. 1840 in Germany; d. Dec. 3, 1908 in Iowa; m. in Germany in about 1854, Mary Cassabaum, b. 12 Jan. 1842 in Germany, d. 12 May 1924 in Iowa. Their children are:
William and his family settled in Benton Township, Des Moines County, Iowa. The couple had 11 children. The two oldest children, Mary, b. 1865, and Anna L., b. 1867, died in early childhood. William farmed most of his life.
The Pogemillers, financially, did well on their farm. Maria Cassabaum (Kassabaum) Pogemiller, however, outlived three of her children - Anna, William and Lydia. She also saw her family begin to spread into the west. Lydia and Minnie and their spouses, John Bachenberg and Oscar Sanders, moved to southeast Nebraska in Pawnee and Johnson Counties. Sarah and her husband, William Sauer, relocated in Inkster, North Dakota.
Her daughter, Emma and Fred Green became residents of Galesburg, Illinois.
William, Mary and their two oldest children are buried in Latty Church Cemetery in Benton Township.
One item of note, many of William's daughters who survived to adulthood died of some form of cancer. Lydia died of Osteomalacia. Sarah was stricken with cancer of the bowel and Mary had liver cancer.
When Marie Cassabaum Pogemiller died in may of 1924, she left her estate to her heirs. At that time they were: Caroline Gieselman, Sperry, Iowa; Sarah Sauer, Inkster, N. Dak.; Mary Sanders, Crab Orchard, Neb.; Minnie Smith, Burlington, Iowa; Emma Green, Burlington, Iowa; Charles Pogemiller, Gilby, N. Dak.; Ray Bachenberg, Lewiston, Neb.; Lucy Bachenberg Matteson, Inkster, Nebr. To Marlene Sanders Sargent who passed away during the summer of 2007. She understood the importance of family and was always ready to help others. Without the information and pictures she provided of the Pogemiller family this page would not be possible.
