Transcription of a Microfilm Record of a Declaration under Oath by John Harris In the Anderson District Court of South Carolina at Age 70 (Date Illegible � about 1832)
South Carolina Anderson District On this (illegible) day of (illegible) Personally appeared in open court before the Hon'b'l (illegible) presiding Judge of Circuit Court of Anderson District, now sitting, Jno. Harris a resident in Anderson District in the State of S.C. aged 70 years, who being duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. That on or about the (illegible) day of (illegible) he joined Capt. Alexander Noble's Company in Col. Pickens Reg't Commanded by Gen'l Williamson and marched into the State of Georgia to aid the Citizens of that State against the Indians_ That after his return from Georgia the same Reg't was ordered to Charleston for the Relief at that place besieged by the enemy, that before they reached that place they received intelligence that Charleston had surrendered to the British, and the Reg't returned to Abbeyville District and he was employed as one of a guard under Lieut. Jos. Calhoun at McGowan's Blockhouse for the protection of the frontier for a month or more that he was one of a detachment who pursued a Col. Boyd with his Reg't of Tories into Georgia when he this deponant was severely [�severely�struck through] wounded in the head. That in September 1780 he joined Capt. McCall and was in the Battle of the Cow Pens in Jan'y 1781. When Col. Tarleton was defeated that he continued with Col. McCall who had been promoted & under the immediate command of Capt. Alex'r Luckie that they marched into North Carolina where he quit the Army _ in 1781 _ That on or about Ag't 1781 he joined Cap't Johnstons Company under Col. Sam - - - Math - - - and joined the Army under Gen'l Lafafayette (sic) that he was detached to take care of some of the wounded of the Americans and was present at the capture of Cornwallis and his Army at Little York_that he was about three months in this service during this time _ that he afterward returned to Augusta County Virginia. I hereby relinquish any claim whatever to a Pension or Annuity except the present, and declare that my name is not on the Pension Roll of the Agency of any State _ In answer to the 1st Interogatory. I was born on the Eastern Shore of Maryland on or about Dec'r 1762 _ In answer to the 2nd . There was a record of my birth which was burnt in a house destroyed by fire. In answer to the 3rd . I lived with my father in Abbeyville District when I first turned out in defence of my country _ That I continued to live in Abbeyville for several years after the close of the War of the Revolution when I moved to Pendleton where I have lived ever since _ I have answered the 4th in my general Declaration _ I have answered the 5th in my Declaration _ In answer to the 6th I did not receive a discharge _ as I recollect About _ _ Sep't 1780 he joined Cap't McCall and went to Augusta where McCall was promoted to the rank of Col. And Sam'l Taylor Major and Alex'r Luckie Cap't. of the Company in which this deponant served _ That British in Augusta being confused they were compelled to raise this Siege _ That this Reg't went into North Carolina and Joined the Army under Gen'l Morgan and was at Tarleton's defeat at the Cowpens, that he quit the Army in Feb'y following _ that during the above this deponant served about five months _ Transcribed by Louis and Laura Lee Sillay On July 31 2001 from a print from Microfilm Reel No. RW 2751 (AD 0395) (a portion of) Record N0. 3363; Folder No.'s 1 & 2; Harris, John; Frames 360-409 This microfilm located at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History 8301 Parklane Road Columbia, South Carolina 29223-4905
