Elon - On Monday, July 5, 2004, Kathleen Ammons Lankford went home to be with Jesus. She was born in Mars Hill on Nov. 8. She was a direct descendant of two founders of Mars Hill College, where she graduated. She was also a graduate of Meredith College in Raleigh. Kathleen was a long-time resident of Elon and most recently resided in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., where she moved to be near her daughter. Kathleen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Eugene; her precious daughter, Marsha; her parents, James and Lilly Ammons; and her siblings, Iva Watkins, Iris Buckner, Bernice, Boyd, Theral and James Ammons. She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne and her husband, Frank, of Shalimar, Fla.; grandson, Paul and his wife, Kerry, of Great Falls, Va.; grandson, Brian of Destin, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Blair, Brandon and Kimberly; and beloved nieces, nephews, many cousins and friends. Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Burlington is in charge of the arrangements. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A celebration of Kathleen's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Elon Community Church. Memorials may be made in Kathleen's memory to Elon Community Church.

11 M i. James "George" WATKINS was born on 3 Oct 1929 in Buncombe Co, NC. He died on 8 Aug 2004 in Buncombe Co, NC. James married Pauline MANEY.

James "George" Watkins, 74, of Jupiter Road, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004. Mr. Watkins was born on Oct. 3, 1929, in Buncombe County, where he had lived all of his life. He retired from the License and Theft Division of the NC Department of Motor Vehicles in 1982 after 25 years of service. During his retirement he enjoyed working on his beef cattle farm. George served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars and the UN Service Medal. He was a member of Barnardsville United Methodist Church. He was the son of the late George Dewey and Iva Ammons Watkins. Also preceding him in death were two sisters, Mary Lou W. Ferrell and Doris W. Pearman. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Pauline Maney Watkins; sister, Dale W. Allen of Raleigh; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville, with the Rev. David Warren officiating. Burial will be in West Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the residence. Flowers are acceptable and appreciated.
