     Albert Emanuel Extrom was born on 7 July 1885 at Marshall County, Illinois. Albert died on 13 June 1896 at Marshall Co., IL, at age 10. His body was interred at Swedish Cemetery, Varna, Marshall County, Illinois.¹

     Anna Eleanor Extrom was born on 21 September 1889 at Marshall County, Illinois. Anna died on 20 June 1988 at St. Joseph's Nursing Home, Lacon, Marshall County, Illinois, at age 98.² Her body was interred on 23 June 1988 at Swedish Cemetery, Varna, Marshall County, Illinois.

     Arthur Roland Extrom was born on 7 August 1922 at Brookfield, Cook County, Illinois.¹ He married Marjorie Rose Lass on 7 March 1946.¹ Arthur Roland Extrom and Marjorie Rose Extrom had no children.² Arthur Roland Extrom died on 3 March 1978 at age 55.¹

     Birdie Marie Extrom was born on 22 May 1894 at Wenona, Marshall County, Illinois. She married James Arthur Marland on 19 October 1920 at Streator, LaSalle County, Illinois.¹ Birdie died on 31 March 1975 at Methodist Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, at age 80.¹ Marland -
Mrs. James Arthur (Berdie M.) Marland, 80, Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Streatorland, died unexpectedly in the Methodist hospital, Memphis, Tenn., at 1:30 p.m. Monday.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, in the Baker funeral home, Dwight, with Rev. Charles W. Mann officiating. Burial will be in Wenona cemetery.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday.
Mrs. Marland was born at Wenona, May 22, 1894 to John Peter and Christina (Moblad) Extrom. She was educated in the Streator area, while the family made their home at Munster, southwest of the city. She attended Brown's Business College and, prior to her marriage, was employed as a milliner at Purcell's Department store.
She married James A. Marland, Oct 19, 1920, in the Baptist parsonage, Streator, with Rev. B. F. Irving officiating.
A resident of Dwight for 30 years she moved in August of 1974 to Memphis, Tenn., residing at Wesley Highland Towers. Prior to living in Dwight, she had resided in the Odell area.
Mrs. Marland had been affiliated with the Dwight Methodist church. Her husband, who died in 1968, had been an operator for GM and O railroad.
Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Eugene (Lucille) Leonard of Memphis, Tenn; three grandson, all of Memphis; one sister, Mrs. Ray (Mabel) McFadden of Streator.
Preceding her in death besides her husband were three sisters, including Mrs. Ellen Olson of Wenona, Selma and Maude; four brothers, Charles, Harry, William, and Lloyd.¹

     Charles Elmer Extrom was born on 26 September 1885 at Holdridge, Phelps County, Nebraska. He lived in 1909 at Holman Township, Osceola County, Iowa, He was living with his sister and brother-in-law Harry Snyder and assisting in the arm work. He married Hettie Beebe on 4 January 1910 at Osceola County, Iowa. The license was issued on 3 Jan 1910.³ Charles died on 30 May 1946 at Centralia, Marion County, Illinois, at age 60. His body was interred on 2 June 1946 at Salem, Marion County, Illinois. On 5 Jun 1946, Birdie Marland sent the following letter to her sister Maude Snyder, regarding their brother Charles.

Dear Maude & Harry,
Well we went to Salem Friday night. Got there about midnight. Harry and Bill came to Streator on the train and went with us, and we all went in Mabel's car. Dr. had given Hettie a sleeping pill so she didn't know we were there until morning. They were all in bed but Gladys and Lois go up and we had a lunch before we went to some friends of theirs to stay the rest of the night. Saturday morning Ellen and I went to the cemetery with Hettie, Earl and Gladys to pick out a lot. They got one in a very nice location on a little slope. They brought Charlie back about noon. He looked so nice, just like he did years ago and as we all remember him. He hasn't looked like Charlie to me for a long time, but he did now, and looked so peaceful and content. Hettie sad nobody but here knew how long he has suffered. Said he never had one single night that he could sleep right thru without pain. Said many a time he'd say he didn't see how he could go and drive the bus, but he did. He had known he had ulcers for about two years, but when he was careful about what he ate, he got along alright, but last Tuesday he took the children to school, but wasn't able to go after them in the afternoon. They called the Doctor and he was taken to the hospital and operated on Wed. morning. Dr. had given him a hypo at home and Charlie never knew anything until it was over. When he woke up he didn't know and they could hardly make him believe he'd been operated on. They had given him a spinal too, so what ever the Doctor had given him must have been plenty strong. He seemed to get along alright until evening. Hettie had been there all the time and was tired of course so they urged her to go home for a little while and she said she would if the nurse would let her know if there was any change at all. They had a special nurse. But Gladys went there in the evening and the nurse said he had been sinking for an hour, and she hadn't even called the Doctor. He kept on sinking and the end came a little after eleven. The ulcers were so perforated and the acid from them had gone all thru his intestines they said. For along time after he died it kept working up and out of his mouth. That's why they didn't bring him back home on Friday. Hettie is heart broken. Just can't see how she can go on without him. Everybody down there mentioned their devotion to each other, even the minister in his sermon. He had lots of friends thats sure. The flowers were so very beautiful and there were such a lot, 26 or 27 large sprays, and five huge baskets, and the most beautiful blanket from his children, (on the casket) I have ever seen. White madonna lilies and carnations and deep red roses and fashioned so artistically. Two of the baskets were nearly as tall as I am. The one we got was like that and was lovely. White gladiolus in the back and deep pink roses in the front. On the ribbon the words "Our Brother". I wish so much you could have seen it. Harry paid for it and we paid him, so you can send your money to him. We paid two dollars a piece. The other basket like it was from the Board of Education. Hettie's brothers sent a spray and here sister who is in California sent one. None of her folds came to the funeral. There was just a prayer at the house and the service was at the Methodist Church, of which they are members. The minister gave a wonderful talk. His topic was "Be ye faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life". He spoke fo Charlie's faithfulness to his Bible Class and his Church, and of the good example he had set for his children to follow, and cautioned his children to do the same for their children, I wish you could have heard it. A lady sang three lovely songs. "In the Garden" was one, but I did not know the other two, however they were so pretty and she had a very sweet voice.
The casket was beautiful, sort of gray metal, beautifully lined. There was also a steel vault. Hettie wanted the very best. Said nothing was too good for Charlie. I feel so sorry for her. He was her eyes as well as her companion. He read the newspapers and Bible to her and everything. I'm glad she has Beverly, Gladys' little girl with her. She's only nine but spends most of her time in Hettie's part of the house and will be company for her and can go to church with her.
Hettie and here three children had a very touching scene at the casket Sunday morning. She said it should be a lesson to all of them to live better so they could meet him in Heave, some day, and she would never cease praying for them. I guess they have worried a lot about Gladys and Earl. Lois is so good and is a comfort to her mother. Hettie said she wished Lois lived close by, as she's so thoughtful and kind. She lives in Brookfield now. Surely glad she wasn't still in Calif. She has a good husband and two cute little boys. I think she and her husband will be just like Chas. and Hettie, they are very devoted now. Earl has two nice girls, 6 and 8 years. His wife is nice too, I like her very much. Earl didn't get home until after Chas. had gone and he felt so bad that he didn't get to speak to him after all. He lives in Quincey, but hasn't found a place for his family yet, so Pauline and the little girls will stay with Hettie for a while. There was so much food sent in we didn't need to cook a thing while there. There was a whole bake ham, fried chicken, salads, pie, canned foods, butter, cream and at seven homemade cakes. People were so grand.
Marjorie and Carl, and Ruth and her new husband came to the funeral. Marj is expecting another baby in November. Her little boy is so cute and smart. Harry went home with them and back to Chicago from there. Mabel, Ellen and I came Monday afternoon.²

     Clarence George Extrom married Harriet E (?).² Clarence George Extrom was born on 6 March 1919.² Clarence died on 13 March 1995 at Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin, at age 76.²

     Clement Extrom was born on 11 July 1913 at Illinois.¹ He died in August 1981 at Victorville, San Bernardino County, California, at age 68.²

     Dale Franklin Extrom was born on 30 January 1924 at Brookfield, Cook County, Illinois.¹ He was married and divorced. They had no children.² He died on 12 October 1997 at Merrillan, Jackson County, Wisconsin, at age 73.¹ Dale Extrom, 73, of Merrillan, Wis.., died Saturday, Oct. 12, 1997, at his home after a lengthy illness.
He was born Jan. 31, 1924 in Brookfield, the son of Harry A. and frances G. (nee Fincham) Extrom.
He enlisted into the United States Army and served in World War II in a heavy artillery battalion.
After returning from the service, Mr. Extrom managed a number of bowling establishments in the western suburbs of Chicago, and was a member of the American Bowling Congress.
Shortly after retiring in 1986, he moved to the Hafield/Merrillan area from Downers Grove.
He was formerly married to Lilliam Blazejovsky.
He is survived by his brother, Robert L. (wife Marijean) Extrom of Arlington Heights; three sisters Marjorie E. Bergstrom of Sweickley, Pa., Dorothy M. Bergstrom of Phoenix, Ariz., and Betty J. (Seaholm) Thompson of Morris.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Gesche Funeral Home in Neilsville, Wis. Burial will be in the Clarendon Hills Cemetery in Westmont.
Visitation will be from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

     Donald Harry Extrom was born on 13 October 1911 at Wenona, Marshall County, Illinois.¹ He married Clara Alice Thompson on 30 March 1935.¹ Donald died on 28 October 1966 at Downers Grove, DuPage County, Illinois, at age 55.¹ The Chicago Tribune printed the following obituary on 29 Oct. 1966.

     Doris Extrom was born in 1915. Her body was interred in 1954 at Swedish Cemetery, Varna, Marshall County, Illinois. Doris died in 1954 at Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois.

     Dorothy Mae Extrom was born on 2 January 1917 at Wenona, Marshall County, Illinois. She married George Henry Bergstrom on 6 May 1938.¹ Dorothy Mae Extrom died on 4 February 2009 at Glendale, Maricopa County, Arizona, at age 92.²

     Earl Extrom was born on 7 October 1910 at Illinois.¹ He died in February 1980 at Tucson, Pima County, Arizona, at age 69.¹

     Edith Laurene Extrom was born on 29 August 1927 at Streator, LaSalle County, Illinois.¹ She died on 18 October 1993 at age 66.¹

     Ellen Ruth Extrom was born on 7 August 1925 at Streator, LaSalle County, Illinois.¹ She married Edward James Sutton on 19 January 1946.¹ Ellen Ruth Extrom died on 8 July 1989 at age 63.¹

     Ellen Thressa Extrom was born on 29 June 1882 at Marshall County, Illinois. She married Erik Olson on 7 March 1914 at Wenona, Marshall County, Illinois.¹ Ellen died on 5 February 1964 at Wenona, Marshall Co., IL, at age 81.¹ Her obituary read: Mrs. Ellen Olson, 81, Died Wednesday; Rites Tomorrow
Mrs. Ellen Olson, 81, died at 9:20 yesterday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Burdette Evans. Mrs. Olson had been in failing health the past three years and recently had been taken to the home of her daughter to be cared for.
Visitation will begin at the Thierry funeral home after 4 o'clock the (Thursday) afternoon. Funeral services will be held from Bethany Lutheran church Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the Rev. Paul V. Randolph officiating. Burial will be in Bethany Lutheran cemetery.
Ellen Theresa Extrom was born near Magnolia June 29, 1882, the daughter of Peter and Christine (Moblad) Extrom. She was united in marriage with Eric E. Olson on March 7, 1914. He preceded her in death May 3, 1938.
Surviving are three children, Mrs. H. Burdette (Alice) Evans of Wenona, Melvin Olson of Phoenix, Ariz., and Virgil Olson of Pecan Gap, Tex; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Mabel McFadden of Streator; Mrs. J. A. (Berdie) Marland of Dwight, and Mrs. Maude Snyder of Storm Lake, Iowa, and two brothers, William Extrom of LaGrange Park and Lloyd Extrom of Palo Alto, California.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister and two brothers; also a son, Arthur William, who was a twin of Mrs. Evans and died when six months old.
Mrs. Olson had lived most of her life in the Munster, Wenona and Magnolia area. Following her marriage, she lived on a farm near Streator, then moved to Rockford and returned to Wenona in 1928.
She was a member of the Bethany Lutheran Church and its organizations in Wenona.² On13 Feb 1964, the Wenona Index reported on Ellen's funeral: Olson Rites -
Funeral services for mrs. Ellen Olson, who died Wednesday morning, were held Friday at 2 p. m. at Bethany Lutheran Church.
Rev. Paul V. Randolph officiated at the services and Edwin Lindgren was the soloist, accompanied by Miss Blanche Lindgren, organist. Rev. Randolph also read a poem composed by Melvin Olson, son of the deceased.
Burial was in the Bethany cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were: Howard Dean and Robert McFadden, Martin Appleton, Elmer Helander, and Herbert Extrom.

     Florence Extrom was born on 19 November 1891 at Marshall County, Illinois.^1,2 She married Francis E. Moffett on 28 June 1913 at Wenona, Marshall County, Illinois.³ Florence Extrom died in July 1971 at Downers Grove, DuPage County, Illinois, at age 79.²

     George Phillip Extrom was born on 26 February 1887 at Magnolia, Marshall County, Illinois.² He married Martha V Thorson on 21 June 1911 at Cook County, Illinois.^3,4
     George Phillip Extrom registered for the draft for World War I on 5 June 1917, while living at 934 22d Street, Moline, Rock Island, Illinois, reporting he was employed as accountant. He has a wife and one child.² He married Mary Moore at Moline, Illinois.¹ George died in April 1973 at Madison, Dane County, Wisconsin, at age 86.⁵

     Harry Arthur Extrom was born on 14 July 1887 at a sod house, Loomis, Phelps County, Nebraska. He married Frances Goodyear Fincham on 2 November 1910 at Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan.² Harry Arthur Extrom In October 1925, the Streator newspaper reported the following: SEVEN STREATOR PEOPLE NEARLY AXPHYXIATED BY GAS FUMES IN RESIDENCE ---- hildren of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Extrom, 309 S. Vermillion Street Overcome with Gas --Parents also Affected---Neighbors Rushed to Assistance and Physician Is Called --- Carbon Dioxide From Gas Heater Blamed for Close Call. ---
Seven people, an entire family are thanking God today for their narrow escape from a horrible death by axphyxiation from carbon dioxide fumes arising from a gas heater, which was being operated in their home.
The Extrom family, 309 South Vermillion street are the people who so narrowly missed having their lives suffed out before the poisonous gas. Only the prompt work of Dr. Schoenneschoefer, who used respiratory methods, saved their lives.
The five children of mr. and Mrs. H. A. Extrom, Dale, tow, Arthur, three, Dorothy, eight, Betty, five and Ellen ruth, two months old baby, were overcome by the fumes while the parents suffer fumes, but did not lose consciousness.
Children Complained.
The family was seated at the breakfast table this morning, when one of the children complained of a sore throat. The child was not thought to be serious and nothing was done. After the meal the five children were playing in the living room, while Mr. and Mrs. Extrom were engaged in other duties.
Suddenly without warning, the children began to lose consciousness and one by one they dropped to the floor. Mr. and Mrs. Extrom came into the room and they two were somewhat staggered by the fumes. Having the presence of mind to dash to the door and call the neighbors, the children were rescued and taken into the fresh air.
A physician was called and after a lengthy period, aided by the neighbors he restord them. It was the oinion of the doctor that a few minutes more in the room filled with the poisonous gas would have proved fatal to all.
Feeling Better Now.
At noon today, the children suffering more than their parents were fast recovering from the affects. They experience severe pains in their heads and lungs howeve. Neither Mr. or Mrs. Extrom fully recovered, as both complained of headaches at noon.
The close call, which threatened to blot out the lives of the entire family is the first case of asphyxiation, or near asphyxiation since Archie White and his son John were discovered ....³ Harry was listed as the head of a family on the 1930 Census at Brookfield Village, Cook County, Illinois. Funeral services were held Thursday from the Adam and Wintinfield funeral home at Downers Grove for Harry Extrom, 75, 6126 Grand Ave., Downers Grove who died Tuesday following an extended illness.
Survivors include the following sisters. Mrs. Ray (Mabel) McFadden, Streator, Mrs. Eric (Ellen) Olson, Wenona, Mrs. J. A. (Berdie) Marland, Dwight, and Mrs. Harry (Maude) Snyder, Storm Lake, Iowa.
He was born in Nebraska son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Extrom. The family moved to Wenona and later to Munster. He married Frances Fincham of Streator in November of 1910. They resided here for a period and then moved to Downers Grove.
The widow, five daughters and five sons survive with 20 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and two brothers, William of LaGrange Park and Lloyd of California.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister.

Harry A. Extrom, 75 of 6126 Grand st., Downers Grove died yesterday in Hinsdale Sanitarium and Hospital. He had operated the Extrom cycle shop at 3 E. Ogden av., Downers Grove, for the last 30 years. Surviving are his widow, Frances; five sons, Donald, Kenneth, Arthur, Dale and Robert; five daughters, Mrs. [MDOR-I .. an .. an .. an . a] Margorie Bergstrom, Mrs. Dorothy Bergstrom, Mrs. Betty Seaholm, Mrs. Ruth Sutton, and Mrs. Edith Reinmuth; four sisters, two brothers 18 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow in the chapel at 4343 Main st., Downers Grove.¹

     Jule Extrom was born between 1921 and 1922 at Illinois.¹ She died on 19 August 1964 at California.

     Karl Extrom was born on 18 May 1881 at Väse Parish, Värmland County, Sweden. Karl immigrated with his mother and others in 1882. Karl died in 1883 at Lacon County, Illinois.

     Kenneth Albert Extrom was born on 3 July 1914 at Ancona, Illinois.¹ He married Eleanor Katherine Thompson on 29 August 1936.¹ Kenneth Albert Extrom died on 23 April 1996 at Western Springs, Cook County, Illinois, at age 81.²

     Lloyd Leonard Extrom was born on 14 March 1896 at Wenona, Marshall County, Illinois. He registered for the World War I draft in 1917 at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. He married Abby Boyle. Lloyd was listed as the head of a family on the 1930 Census at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Head Lloyd L Extrom, rents home, has radio, 35, marr at 25, b IL, parents b Sweden, owner of garage repair; wife Abby K 38, marr at 28, b IL, parents b IL; dau Jule D 8 b IL; nephew Ivan Young, 24, single, b IN, parents b IL, mechanic in garage.¹ He died in June 1973 at Morongo Valley, San Bernardion County, California, at age 77.²

     Mable Olive Extrom was born on 20 August 1892 at Wenona, Marshall County, Illinois. She married George Ray McFadden, son of George McFadden, on 22 March 1911 at Ottawa, LaSalle County, Illinois.¹ The Wenona Index of 29 Mar 1911 included the following item. Ray McFadden, living southwest of Streater, and Miss Mable Exstrom, daughter of Peter Exstrom of Munster, were united in marriage at Ottawa March 22nd.² Mable was listed as George's wife on the 1930 Census at Reading Township, Livingston County, Illinois.³ Mable died on 23 October 1977 at St. Mary's Hospital, Streator, LaSalle County, Illinois, at age 85.⁴ Her body was interred at Riverview Cemetery, Streator, LaSalle County, Illinois.

     Margorie Eulola Extrom was born on 30 January 1913 at Ancona, Illinois.¹ She married Carl Robert Bergstrom on 14 November 1936.¹ Margorie Eulola Bergstrom died on 5 February 2000 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, at age 87.²

     Maude Agnes Extrom was born on 14 July 1887 at Loomis, Phelps County, Nebraska. Whether the twins were born at her parents home or at Uncle Charles home is not clear. They lived about two miles apart. The following year their twin cousins, Bell and Delle, were born in the same house. It is known that the house was a sod house. She married Harry Snyder on 14 December 1907 at Munster, Livingston County, Illinois. Maude died on 12 June 1974 at Lakefield Hospital, Lakefield, Jackson County, Minnesota, at age 86.¹ Her body was interred at Storm Lake Cemetery, Storm Lake, Buena Vista County, Iowa.
About 1995 Maude's middle daughter wrote an article about her parents.
My story of the folk’s life

     Harry Snyder was born at Long Point, Illinois on December 30, 1883. His folks moved to Storm Lake, Iowa when he was 2 years old. Maude Extrom was born at Loomis, Nebraska on July 14, 1887. Her folks moved to Munster, Illinois when she was 5 years old. That was close to the place where Snyder’s had left. Dad went to Illinois to work for relatives early in the 1900’s where he met Mom. Harry Snyder and Maude Extrom were married at Munster, Illinois, December 14, 1907.
     They made their first home at a farm on the south side of Storm Lake, Iowa for a year. In the fall of 1908 they moved to a large farm, just south of Sibley, Iowa, which is now the Sibley airport. Mom said Dad and Uncle Ralph would buy horses that had never been worked and break them. Dad traded horses every chance he got.
     Doris was born at Sibley on February 20, 1909 and I was born October 30, 1910. In the fall of 1911 they moved back to Storm Lake, Iowa and lived on a farm north east of Storm Lake. Harriet was born May 11, 1913. Dad bought his first car the same day, a Ford touring car. We lived at Storm Lake until the fall of 1914. Dad had purchased a farm near Borup, Minnesota, 20 miles northeast of Moorhead, Minnesota. They were so near the Red River that in the spring the river overflowed flooding everything. Mom said the chickens couldn’t get off the roosts for 3 weeks.
     Mom’s twin brother and his wife (Uncle Harry and Aunt Veda) came up there and worked on farms for a year or two. Then they moved back to Illinois.
     Doris was ready to start school in the fall of 1915, but the folks were three miles from a country (one room) school house and they would have to take her and get her. They were moving the next spring to near Felton, Minnesota in a consolidated school district so Doris was kept out a year. Mom taught us a lot of things at home that winter.
     In the fall of 1916 we both started school and went all through school together. We even had a horse drawn school bus to go in, maybe 10 – 15 pupils.
     We started out in kindergarten but Mom had taught us all the things they taught in kindergarten then so in six weeks we were put in first grade. After three years of drowned out crops every spring we moved back to Storm Lake where we lived with Grandma and Grandpa Snyder a year and Dad farmed their farm south of storm Lake. That year we went to Hayes Consolidated School. Minnesota schools were rated ahead of Iowa schools then and we had different schooling so we skipped from grade 2 to grade 3. A cousin of my Dad’s was our bus driver there. In the cold winter and lots of snow he drove a bob sled for a school bus. Horses could get through where autos couldn’t. He had the bottom of the wagon box covered with hay or straw and we’d each take a blanket and a soap stone (a Rock like oblong piece of material that was warmed in the oven before we left) to keep our feet warm on the ride to school
     Standard Oil Company was just getting started in the Middle West, looking for employees so Dad and Uncle Rollie got a job with them but we had to move to Casselton, North Dakota, 20 miles west of Moorhead, Minnesota. Uncle Rollie left right away and we went as soon as Mom and Dad could get our family ready to move. Harriet started school while we lived there. Uncle Rollie didn’t stay.
     In the spring of 1920, Standard Oil offered Dad a transfer to Benson, Minnesota, another move. In Benson, Dad had the first bulk truck (hauling gas to farmer) in that part of the country. Dad had red hair, but I can’t remember when he wasn’t bald on top, so one month in the Standard Oil Magazine they said they had a walking advertisement for their 2 gasolines. Their truck driver in Benson had SoLite on top and Red Crown around the bottom. My two brothers were born in Benson, George on June 14, 1920 and James on December 20, 1921. Doris and I were in 5^th grade and Harriet in 1^st. We lived in the north end of town and the grade school was in the south part. We walked to school and went home for lunch. The railroad track runs right through the center of town and if a train went through during the noon hour we really had to hurry.
     Farming was still dad’s favorite so in the falloff 1923 he traded our house in Benson for a 160 acre farm near Hancock, about 15 miles north west of Benson. I don’t know if money also was involved or not but land was not worth much then.
     While in Benson we attended the congregational church. I still have two friends from Sunday School and Christian Endeavor who live near me. May Wilson Hadnefield of Jackson and Helen Oglesby Borland of Lake Park, Iowa. (Both passed away.)
     Before the deal was finally completed for the farm, Dad and Mom went out to look at the farm again on the same evening that the people from the farm decided to go to Benson to look at the house. Several neighbor children were playing on our corner with us that evening. When the man met Dad afterward he asked if all those children were his. Dad asked him how many had been playing there and he said a dozen or more. Dad’s reply was that “They must have all been home then.” So when we moved to the country all the neighbors expected a really large family.
     Doris and I were freshmen in high school. At that time many families took in high school girls to live with them, giving them their room and board in return for helping them with house work and children. That helped many country girls go to high school. Doris and I wanted to stay with our classmates so we each found someone who wanted help. We went to Benson High School two years. After living in town we really enjoyed the farm. Doris and I got home about every two weeks. Some weekends a friend from town enjoyed going home with us.
     One summer Mom’s sister Selma (Mrs. Fred Swanson of Maryfield Saskatchewan, Canada had to have surgery and went to Rochester. While Uncle Fred was with Aunt Selma their three children were with us most of the summer.
     After 2 years of only being home on a few weekends, Doris and I decided we’d like to go to Hancock to school. We and a neighbor girl talked our parents into renting us an upstairs apartment, very small, and nothing like an apartment of today. We did our own cooking and cleaning and felt as if we were our own boss. Home every weekend where Mom would help us prepare food to take back for next week’s meals.
     Even though we had felt tied down the two years we worked for our room and board, one year on our own and we decided we wanted to be with a family so Doris and I found next door neighbors who wanted a school girl to help them. Doris was with a family who had twins, a boy and a girl. I don’t think whey wee in school. The family I lived with had 3 small children.
     We graduated in May 1927. In the fall of 1927, Doris went to Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis to nurse’s training. I went back to Benson where in connection with the High School they had a 1 year Normal Training course which qualified you to teach in a country school. One room and all eight grades. Harriet started high school in Hancock and James started school near home. George was in 2^nd grade.
     After 1 year of Normal Training I got my teacher’s certificate and taught for 3 years in a country school. Doris graduated from Nurses training and went to work as a nurse in Minneapolis.
     In the fall of 1930, Dad sold the farm and they moved back to Grandpa’s farm at storm Lake, Iowa. Harriet was a senior in High School and I had a contract for the school year so we stayed in Minnesota. Harriet lived with an older lady and I stayed with a family in my school district and spent weekends with Harriet. I had a Model T Ford coupe that I drove back and forth to school while the folks were there. At Christmas time that year (1930) Harriet and I drove to Storm Lake for Christmas. It was about 250 miles. For 2 young girls to go that far alone was something at that time. We got along fine. We went back right after New Years. The folks came to Hancock for Harriet’s graduation and she returned to Iowa with them, engaged to Emmett Hubbard. After deciding I wanted to do something instead of teaching in Minnesota, where my salary was $85 a month with none of the family there. I went to Minneapolis where Doris thought I could find work. I was there about 6 weeks and nothing showed up except door to door selling encyclopedias so I went to Storm Lake and tried that. I soon found out I was no salesman so went to work doing housework for $2 a week. I took the teachers examination and got an Iowa Teachers Certificate but there were so many teachers who had gotten their education in Iowa, they were hired over me with my Minnesota education.
     Harriet and Emmett were married December 14, 1932 on the folk’s silver Wedding Anniversary. They lived at Storm Lake and worked on a farm until 1936 when they moved back to Hancock.
     Dad farmed Grandpa’s farm until 1939. Grandma and Grandpa Snyder lived with them. George graduated from Hayes Consolidated School on the south side of Storm Lake in 1937; James in 1938. Bud and I were married March 6, 1935 on Bud’s 23^rd birthday.
     On March 1^st, 1939 they moved to a larger farm 11 miles northwest of Alta. George was killed in a gun accident in June of 1941 about 10 days before his 21^st birthday. Doris and John were married December 26, 1938 at Storm Lake. On March 1^st, 1943 the folks moved closer to Storm Lake – about 5 miles NE of Storm Lake. Grandma and Grandpa Snyder had moved off their farm and grandpa had a stroke so they lived with Uncle Rollie and Aunt Lill. Grandpa died May 22th, 1933 and the folks got a little house for Grandma to live in. It was in their yard and an intercom buzzer was connected to the folk’s house. Grandma died August 10^th, 1947.
     Bud and Jean were married on August 23, 1940. Bud was in the service at the time (at Des Moines) so they lived there. He received medical discharge in 1943.
     The folks lived there until he had a sale in 1954. We had bought a farm and moved to Brewster in 1950 after having lived at Storm Lake, Truesdale, Early and Arthur on rented farm for 15 years. Dad and Mom rented an acreage on the Ne edge of Storm Lake after his sale in1 1954, where Dad worked for the corn canning factory several falls. In 1957 they stored their furniture and went to Illinois. Aunt Ellen’s daughter Alice had a 50^th Wedding Anniversary party for them on December 7^th. After that they went to Wilmington, Delaware to Doris and John’s and spent the rest of the winter.
     When the folks returned from Delaware they rented an apartment for a few months. The acreage was again for rent so they moved back there. Dad raised a lot of sweet corn and sold in stores and individuals.
     Dad passed away from a heart attack April 2, 1963. Mom moved into Gran apartments later that year. She lived there alone until 1966 when she wasn’t able to be alone. She moved to Harlan with Bud and Jean until 1971. They could not care for her so we moved her to Methodist Manor in Storm Lake. She was very dissatisfied anywhere so we moved her to Lake Haven in Worthington in the fall of 1972. She passed away in June 1974. There were 12 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

     Maude Amelia Extrom was born on 11 February 1892 at Marshall County, Illinois. She married Carl Albin Hultgren on 3 December 1913 at Marshall Co., IL.² Maude died in 1974. Her body was interred at Swedish Cemetery, Varna, Marshall County, Illinois.

     Minnie Extrom was born in September 1889 at Marshall County, Illinois.¹ She married Martin Mulvihille. Minnie died in 1965.

     Oliver B. Extrom was born on 16 July 1883 at Marshall County, Illinois. He married Minnie Olson in 1909.^1,2 Oliver was listed as the head of a family on the 1930 Census at Varna, Marshall County, Illinois. Head Oliver B. Extrom, own home value $1500, has radio, age 46, marr at age 25, b IL, parents b Sweden, proprietor of general store; wife Minnie R, age 51, marr ag age 30, b IL, parents b Sweden; dau Doris E. age 14, b IL.³ A local newspaper reported the following event - VARNA - Surprise Birthday Celebration Given For Oliver Extrom
Mr. and Mrs. Alex Nelson, Mrs. Maude Hultgren and Miss Anna Extrom motored to Rockford Sunday morning where they attended church services at Zion Lutheran church. Meeting them at the church were Mr. and Mrs. G. P. Extrom, of Madison, Wis., Mrs. Karen Brown, Randy and Kim MacGloskey and Oliver Extrom.
This was a suprise for Oliver as they all came to help him celebrate his seventy-fifth birthday. After church services all went to the home of Mrs. Karen Brown, Jack MacCloskey and sons, Randy and Kim, where a delicious dinner was served by Mrs. Mildred Marander, Mrs. William Marander and Miss Ann Nelson. Mr. William Marander was also a guest. This however did not end Oliver's suprises.
After the picnic dinner all were invited to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Winter's spacious farm home, where friends are always welcome. Fifty guests were present, relatives and friends, many of whom formerly lived in Varna. Rev Conrad of the Zion Lutheran church was present and led the program and gave a timely message, as did Mrs. Karen Brown. Oliver responded with words of appreciation.
A delicious supper was served and enjoyed. He received many cards and gifts.
Oliver remained for a longer visit after arriving on Saturday at the Brown and MacCloskey homes.⁴           SOME BOYHOOD MEMORIES OF OLIVER EXTROM
In the days when I was a yung boy, farming, and almost everything else, was geared to a slow pace, not in any way comparable to present day methods or speed. All farm equipment was horse drawn. Machines were simple and few.
Since all corn husking was done by hand many of the stalks still remained standing in the spring and were somewhat of a nuisance when oats were sown, and which had to be cultivated in with horse drawn, one row walking cultivators. These corn stalks would get caught on the frame work of the cultivator to which the shovels were attached and would have to be pulled off frequently. A few years later a simle machine, call a "stalk cutter" came into being, which was horse drawn, like everything else. This equipment would cut the stalks into about ten or twelve inch lengths, and took two rows at a time. This operation made 'cultivating'in' the oats much easier and better too. This stalk cutter did have a seat on it, but the riding was so rough and shaky that some preferred to walk behind it.
All corn was planted using horses and a two row planter. A "check row" wire was used to drop the corn in precisely the exact spot so that it could be cultivated in both directions. It was a boon to farmers when the "pulverizer" came out. I believe they are called "discs" now. That ended putting in oats with a cultivator. Discs soon became indispensible to farmers. The first one I ever saw was only six or seven feet wide.
Harrowing was also done on foot, usually with a four sectioned harrow and four horses. Plowing in the spring and fall was usualy done with walking plows and three horses, but there was also two horse plows. Some few farmers did have breaking plows equipped with seats.
Threshing was also done by slow motion. After oats were cut and shocked and allowed to dry a few days or weeks, threshing began. The first threshing machine I can remember was a single unit. The straw came out at the rear end of the separator through an elevated conveyer which dropped the straw all in one place, and the stacks were made oblong. Two or three men did the stacking and built nice and trim stacks. Then came what was called a "swinging stacker". This was another unit and was placed at the rear of the separator. A belt from the separator operated this stacker which swung from right to left, or vice versa, in a semi-circular pattern distributing the straw from the separator in a circular arc, and three men with forks built beautiful stacks. But in a few years the scene was changed again when the blower stacker made its debut, and the older methods bowed out. This marked the end of the beautifully formed straw stacks in the country which had to give way to shapeless piles of straw, but this was progress.
A twelve horsepower steam engine furnished the motive power for threshing and many other things. This engine had to have fuel to make steam. This also required water, so a good sized water tank, mounted on wheels was an indispensable part of the equipment.
When the threshing equipment was lined up and in order, horse drawn loads of bundles would pull up on both sides of the separator and the drivers would pitch the sheaves on to a table where two men were standing on a platform, each with a hooked knife in his hand, with which to cut the bands on the sheaves before they entered the cylinder compartment of the separator. Corn shelling has also had its evolution.
Of course, there were no telephones in the country then, but cities and some smaller town had such service, and there was no electricity outside of town either. I think I am correct in saying that the first telephone between Varna and Lacon was in the Conrad Held home, across the road from the Tax School House. I remember, also, how obliging this family was when any one needed to call a doctor, or anyone else.
Doctors did not have automobiles then, but had to depend on horse drawn power. Some doctors kept a steady man to take care of the horses.
But, we must say something about "House Work" too. The family washing was laboriously done on a washboard, and the seemingly endless ironings were not easy. Eggs had to be gathered and kept from spoiling without refrigeration. Butter was another item that took a lot of time and patience. The usual churn was a small barrel type affair with a plunger that was worked up and down by hand. When the ingredients finally became butter, the precious lump had to be preserved, and this was done by letting it way down in the well by means of a rope. Later, however, some farmers did have "Ice Boxes", but the ice had to be replenished quite often. There were many other household duties, too numerous to mention, that the ladies had to perform, including such things as sewing husking mittens. The goods was purchased by the yard and made into mittens, and sewing also practically everything the family wore. The list of duties in most families was in-exhaustible. Some families had a spinning wheel which allowed them to make their own yarn, which was later made into socks or stockings for the family, by either the mother or grandmother in the household.
Butchering and canning was another arduous task which had to be done. Lamps, burning kerosene, had to be filled and cleaned and the floors had to be scrubbed etc., etc.
Many more pages could be written on the subject, but I am afraid it is already too much.
I am also sure there are many in Marshall County who could go back in history far beyond the horizon of my memory, as I will be only 85 years young in the middle of next July, 1968. Oliver died in March 1974 at Varna, Marshall Co., IL, at age 90.⁵

     Paul Albert Extrom was born on 14 May 1925 at Madison, Wisconsin.² Paul died on 10 March 2003 at Beaverton, Washington County, Oregon, at age 77.³ Paul Albert Extrom
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 27, 2003, in the chapel of First United Methodist Church in Portland for Paul Albert Extrom, who died March 10 at age 77.
Mr. Extrom was born May 14, 1925, in Madison, Wis. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin and served in the Army in the Pacific during World War II. In 1951, he moved to Portland, where he was an accountant for Pacific Supply and Cenex. He married Florence Carlyon in 1948.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Joan, and two grandchildren.

     Selma Emelia Extrom was born on 21 February 1884 at Holdridge, Phelps County, Nebraska. She married Ansfred B. Swanson, son of Anders Gustaf Swanson and Britta Christina Johansdotter, on 6 January 1909 at Munster, Livingston County, Illinois. A local paper reported the following celebration. Mr. and Mrs. A. Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Swanson, of Maryfield, were honoured at a family dinner on the occasion of their Golden wedding. The dinner was held at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. R. A. McGill, of Fairlight, on Sunday, January 4th, although the anniversary date was January 6yh. Those present were Mrs. Elroy Swanson and Gerald, of Nelson, B. C; Mr. and Mrs. Duane McGill, R.C.A.F., Winnipeg; Miss June McGill, student at Regina general Hospital, and Rae and Gae McGill, of Fairlight. Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Swanson of Wawota, were unable to attend.
On January 6th 1959, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Swanson, of Maryfield were "At Home" to neighbours and friends in celebration of their Golden Wedding anniversary. Some fifty guests signed the guest book, presided over by Mrs. E. W. Swanson, a sister-in-law.
They were the recipients of many lovely cards, gifts, letters and flowers. They enjoyed telephone calls from their youngest son, Elroy, of Nelson, B.C; a nephew, Rev. Virgil Anderson, of Carthage, South Dakota; and several out-of-town friends.
The table was covered with a lace cloth, and centered by a three tiered wedding cake.
A family dinner followed, attended by Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Swanson, Clinton and Darrel, of Wawota; Mr. and Mrs. R. A. McGill, Rae and Gae, of Fairlight, Mrs. Elroy Swanson and Gerald, of Nelson, B.C; Irvin Swanson, (nephew), of Virden, Man., and Mrs. Ivah Gates, of Maryfield.
Those unable to be present were their son Elroy and grand children Carol and Brian, from Nelson, B.C; Meredith Swanson of Lindsburg, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. Duane McGill, of Winnipeg; and June McGill, of Regina.
On January 6th 1909, Ansfred Swanson and Selma Extrom were united in marriage at Munster, Illinois, U.S.A. They came to Canada, to the groom's farm north-west of Mair, Sask., where they resided until retirement in 1948, when they moved to their present home in Maryfield.¹ Selma died on 11 June 1960 at Maryfield, Saskatchewan, Canada, at age 76. Her body was interred on 15 June 1960 at Maryfield Cemetery, Maryfield, Saskatchewan, Canada. Her newspaper obituary reads: SELMA EMELIA SWANSON -
Funeral services were held from Maryfield Auditorium on Wednesday June 15th, for Selma Emilia Swanson, wife of a. B. Swanson, of Maryfield, who passed away in Maryfield hospital, on Saturday, June 11th, at the age of 76 years, three months and 19 days. Rev. Doreen Smith officiated and interment was made in Maryfield Cemetery.
Born February 21st, 1884, in Nebraska, she was one of nine children of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Extrow. On January 6th, 1909 she married O. B. Swanson, and came to Canada in March of the same year, and lived on a farm in what is now the Mair district. Of this union four children were born, Vernon of Wawota; Dorothy who died in infancy, Mildred (Mrs. R McGill) of Fairlight and Elroy of Nelson, B.C. In November, 1948, she moved to Maryfield with her husband.
Quiet and unassuming she took an active part in Church work, W.A. and Homemakers activities, and other community work.
Those attending the funeral from outside points were: Rev. Roland Swanson, Mount Vernon, Wash; Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Swanson, Norwood, Man; Mr. and Mrs. Bill Entwistle, Estevan, Sask; Mr. and Mrs. Luther Swanson, Brandon, Man; Mr. and Mrs. h. Peters and Mr. and Mrs. M. Syrad of Winnipeg; Mr. and Mrs. Wahlstrom and Sons of Stockholm, Sask.
Pallbearers were: J. W. Sample, W. Hartlin, Jim Fowler, Ralph Hill, W. Stockton and Frank Renwick.

     Willetta Extrom was born on 21 January 1923. She died before 1998.

     William Rudolph Extrom was born on 30 May 1889 at Kearney, Kearney County, Nebraska. He married Veda Griffin on 5 January 1911 at Pontiac, Livingston County, Illinois. He married Ruth Olmsted on 1 April 1949. William died in May 1968 at LaGrange, Cook County, Illinois.¹ The Chicago Tribune on 21 May 1968 reported the following obituary.
William R. Extrom, of la Grange Park, father of Clemet Extrom of La Grange Park, Velora Tracy of chicago, and Willetta Crowder of Cincinnati; brother of Lloyd Extrom, Birdie Marland, Mabel McFadden, and Maude Schnieder [should be Snyder]; four grandchildren, Resting at Hailowell & James Funeral Home, 40 S. Ashland avenue, La Grange. Services 10 a. m. Wednesday, Interment Chapel Hill Gardens South.²

     Cora Fald was born on 16 March 1899. She married Alfred William Ekstrom, son of Anders Magnusson and Emma Gustafson, on 23 April 1938. Cora died on 9 February 1975 at age 75.

     Frances Goodyear Fincham was born on 27 May 1891 at Streator, LaSalle County, Illinois.¹ She married Harry Arthur Extrom, son of Jan Petter Magnusson and Christina Moblad, on 2 November 1910 at Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan.² Frances died on 21 July 1966 at Hinsdale Hospital, Hinsdale, DuPage County, Illinois, at age 75.¹ She was buried at Clarendon Hills Cemetery, Clarendon Hills, DuPage County, Illinois.¹

     Winifred Gertrude Forbes was born on 11 August 1894 at Illinois.¹ She married David Ichabod Seaholm on 26 May 1917 at Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.¹ Winifred Gertrude Forbes died in February 1980 at LaCrosse, Wisconsin, at age 85.¹

     Abraham Fröding was born on 13 December 1735 at Väse Parish, Värmland County, Sweden.^3,4 He married Maria Hindrichsdotter on 9 April 1765 at Filipstad Parish, Värmland County, Sweden.⁵ Abraham Fröding appeared on the church records of Philipstad, Filipstad Parish, Värmland County, Sweden, between 1781 and 1789. The record shows Abraham's family during the period. Wife Maria dies in 1786/7 and his second wife Maria Bergmark joins the family. Also daughter Lovisa moves away, probably in 1789.⁶ He married Maria Eleonora Bergmark on 31 March 1789 at Nedre Ullerud, Värmland County, Sweden.⁷

     Bengt Fröding was born on 3 January 1704 at Uddevalla Parish, Göteborg and Bohus County, Sweden.¹

     Brita Sophia Fröding was born on 4 May 1776 at Filipstad Parish, Värmland County, Sweden.¹

     Daniel Fröding was born on 2 March 1790 at Filipstad Parish, Värmland County, Sweden.¹

     Eva Catharina Fröding was born on 16 March 1739 at Väse Parish, Värmland County, Sweden, daughter of Olof Fröding and Ragnilll Eriksdotter, She was baptised the same day.^2,3 Eva Catharina Fröding moved in 1756 away from home.⁴ She married Daniel Moblad, son of (?) Moblad, on 14 October 1756 at Ostra Fågelvik Parish, Värmland County, Sweden; The brides name was given as Eva Cajsa Froding.^5,6

     Eva Cathrina Fröding was born on 24 December 1786 at Filipstad Parish, Värmland County, Sweden.¹

     Gustaf Fröding was born on 12 January 1774 at Filipstad Parish, Värmland County, Sweden.²

     Hindric Fröding was born on 11 September 1770 at Filipstad Parish, Värmland County, Sweden.¹

     Johan Fröding was born.

     Lovisa Fröding was born on 27 June 1766 at Filipstad Parish, Värmland County, Sweden.² She married Olof Moblad, son of Daniel Moblad and Eva Catharina Fröding, on 30 September 1783 at Filipstad Parish, Värmland County.¹ Lovisa Fröding and Olof Moblad appeared on the church records of Gravendal, Säfsnäs Parish, Kopparberg County, Sweden, between 1785 and 1787. They moved away in 1787.³

     Magnus Fröding was born on 19 August 1779 at Filipstad Parish, Värmland County, Sweden.¹

     Maria Fröding was born on 4 August 1782 at Filipstad Parish, Värmland County, Sweden.¹

     Olof Fröding was born on 6 July 1700 at Uddevalla Parish, Göteborg and Bohus County, Sweden.² He appeared on the church records of Hammar, Väse Parish, Värmland County, Sweden, between 1728 and 1735. Olof is shown as living in parish from 1728 to 1734. -- He is not found on the earlier household examination, however it is very hard to read.³ He married Ragnilll Eriksdotter on 28 October 1734 at Väse Parish, Värmland County, Sweden.⁴ Olof Fröding and Ragnilll Eriksdotter appeared on the church records of Lund, Östra Fägelvik Parish, Värmland County, Sweden, between 1741 and 1747. Olof apparently dies about 1747 as his name is crossed of the household examination.⁵ Olof Fröding died circa 1742 at Ostra Fågelvik Parish, Värmland County, Sweden.
