Akin Cemetery is located in the Pleasant Hill Community, off Highway 364, east of Vanndale, between Highways 1 and 163. Just across from the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, turn south on County Road 354.  Follow the road to the cemetery, which will be on the right side of the road.


Special recognition is given to the Cross County Historical Society for their assistance in compiling this information.

Original surveys were made in 1981 by Lena Riley and Jennifer Walker.  The grave of William Akin

(Apr 3, 1810 -  Apr 19, 1859) is the first burial and the cemetery's namesake.


Additional information has been added from obituaries and other records.



The following was taken from “Cross County Cemetery Records, Volume One”


“William Akin was born June 3, 1810 and was married to Sarah C. Kembel, May 28, 1835.  They were the parents of twelve children; Mary, John, William, Samuel, Irvin, Rachel, Louis, Sarah, Letty, Ida, Elizabeth and BellLetty was in bad health and told her father she wanted to be buried by a tree in a plot that they had picked out for a burial place.  However, her father passed away before she did so the family buried him there.  He was the first to be buried there and that is why it is named for him. 


He departed this life on April 19, 1859 at the age of 48 years, 10 months, and nine days.”
