The cemetery is located on Highway
149, approximately 4 1/2 miles north of Earle, next to the (former) Sterling
Layton home. The cemetery plot is an estimated 1/4 acre. As of 2015, this
cemetery is now badly overgrown.

39, along with wife, Mona R., age 30. They had children; Ada age 9, Mildred L.
age 7, Chester L. age 5, and Joseph age 3. Also in the household was 26 year
old Laura Stanley, listed as “sister”.)

County, Tyronza Township, at the time of the 1900 census. They had children;
Mona age 10, Lonnie F. age 9, Laura Ada age 6, John L. age 5, Erma M. age 3,
and Lois Hattie age 1.

15, Ann Layton 13, William T. Layton 11, Ella Layton 10, Margaret J. Layton 8,
Tesse K. Layton 6, and Jacob H. Layton 4. The oldest son, John M. Layton had
been born in Indiana, David, Jessie, and Mahala McCorkle had been born in
Illinois, Ann Layton had been born in Missouri, and the younger children had
been born in Arkansas In 1870, this family was in Jackson County, AR,
Jacksonport PO; James T. Layton 29, Margaret J. 30, Samuel 14, John 13, David
10, Josephine 6, Anna C. 4, William T. 1, and Ella age 4 months. This family
was still in Jackson County, AR in 1900, so Thomas J. Layton would have died
shortly after moving to Crittenden County.)

widower, born Jan 1858 in Indiana. He had brothers; David, born Jul 1889, and
Herbert, Dec 1894. He had one sister, Gertrude, born Apr 1892. All children
were born in Arkansas.)

(ELLEN JOHNSON) ROBINSON (died May 29, 1929 at age 32, Memphis, TN)
Shelby
County death certificate states that Ellen Johnson Robinson was the daughter of
L. R. and Margaret Johnson, and wife of Mr. Robinson of Earle, Ark. She died at
Methodist Hospital in Memphis of General Peritonidis and was buried at Earle,
Ark. By McDonald undertakers on May 29, 1929. Ellen Robinson, age 23, was
listed on the 1920 census of Crittenden County with 32 year old husband,
Garland Robinson. Garland was managing a camp for a stave mill. They had 2
children; 6 year old daughter Chloie, and a son, Charlie Robinson, age 1 yr and
11 months. Also in the household was Albert Robinson, brother of Garland, age
25. By 1930, Chloe Robinson was living in the household with her aunt, Myrtle
G. Johnson Swindle. This grave must be for Ellen Johnson, daughter of Lee R.
Johnson and Margaret Layton Johnson, born about 1898 and died before 1930.

Wife of Lee R. Johnson, daughter of Thomas J. Layton
and Margaret Jane Fuller. In 1930,l Fay Johnson, daughter of Lee R. Johnson and
Maggie Layton, was living in the household with Louis Swindle, age 33, and
wife, Myrtle G. Johnson Swindle, age 35. Louis and Myrtle had a 8 year old
daughter, Margaret Swindle, and 4 month old son, Louis Swindle Jr. Myrtle
Johnson Swindle had a 15 year old son from a previous marriage, John H.
Donahoe. Sister in law, Fay Johnson, was age 16 along with a 16 year old niece,
Chloe Robinson.

Lee R. Johnson, age 43, with wife Maggie, age 38. They had been married 19
years with Maggie giving birth to 11 children, 6 still living. Children listed
in the household were all daughters; Myrtle 15, Ellen 12, Millie 10, Eller 3,
and Pharie age 1. In 1920 Crittenden County, L. R. Johnson, born MO, was listed
as age 51, with wife Margaret shown to be age 45. They had two children in the
household; Lee R. Johnson Jr., age 12, and Fay Johnson age 6.

believe this entry is for SARAH “SALLIE”
SHANNON JONES, wife of L. C. Jones, who died at Baptist Memorial Hospital
in Memphis on Mar 16, 1919 of
Peritonitis due to Appendicitis. She was the daughter of Sam Shannon and Fannie
Austin. The death certificate states her age as 28. The 1900 census of
Crittenden County shows her birth as Mar
1889. The informant on the death certificate was her husband, L. C. Jones,
so it’s not likely that he died on the same date.

C. (LAYTON) FLETCHER, Wife of H. (Howell) Fletcher, Oct 30, 1866 - May 9, 1928
Daughter of Thomas J. Layton. The
1920 census of Crittenden County, Earle, shows T. Roy Fletcher, age 26, a
drayman for the city, along with wife, Cleo Fletcher, age 25. They had
children; Catherine age 4, and Charles H. age 1. Also in the household were the
parents of Roy Fletcher, Howell age 59, born in Mississippi, and Annie, age 53,
born in Missouri. Howell Fletcher was
working in stock veterinary. A 25 year old brother, Burley Fletcher, was also
in the household. He was working as a ginner at a cotton gin.
Cleo Fletcher, wife of Roy, died
Dec. 18, 1930 at Baptist Hospital in Memphis of Endocarditis, resulting from a
tonsil infection from childhood. She was 35, had been born in Earle, and was
the daughter of P. L. Blythe and Clara Fullwood. She was buried in Wynne by
Holt Undertakers of Earle.
Burl Fletcher, son of Howell
Fletcher, born July 28, 1897, died at St. Joseph Hospital in Memphis on June
26, 1950. He was buried at National Cemetery in Memphis by Citizens Funeral
Home of West Memphis.

first wife was Cleo Blythe. He was married to second wife, Ethel, at the time
of his death. He died of respiratory and cardiac failure and was buried at
Layton Cemetery by Citizens Funeral Home on Feb 15, 1945.

household was a 30 year old David Layton, 13 year old daughter, Maudie Lee
Layton, and 11 year old son, Lowell M. Layton.)

Layton. She married Howell Fletcher after the death of her husband in 1924, and
after the death of Howell Fletcher’s wife, Annie Layton, in 1928 The 1930
census of Crittenden County, Norvell, shows Howell Fletcher, age 69, cotton
farmer, born MS, along with 45 year old wife, Ivy May, born KY, both parents
born KY. The census shows that Howell Fletcher had first married at age 21, Ivy
May had married at age 20.)

Jack Shands, born Jun 20, 1943 Crittenden County, AR, died Jun 9, 1945 Memphis,
TN. Son of Fred Shands (born Wayne County, TN) and Geraldine Fletcher (born
TN). Died enroute to John Gaston Hospital from home at 2503 Jackson St.,
Memphis. This child died of Septicemia due to Meiningococous, along with his
sister, Rebecca Ann. Buried at Layton Cemetery by Citizens Funeral Home on Jun
10, 1945.

Rebecca
Ann Shands, born Feb 24, 1945 in Memphis, TN, died Jun 9, 1945 Memphis, TN. Son
of Fred Shands and Geraldine Fletcher of 2503 Jackson St., Memphis. This child
died enroute to John Gaston Hospital of Septicemia due to Meningococous, along
with her brother, Tommy Jack Shands. The informant on both death certificates
was their mother, Mrs. Geraldine Shands. An autopsy was performed on both
children.

Mary
Alma Madden was the oldest child of Walter Norman Madden and Ella Addie Cupp.
Her husband, Thomas J. Atkins, had previously been married to Eva Martin who
died in 1918 and was buried at Cloar Cemetery. The 1910 census of Tyronza Twp,
Crittenden County, shows Tom Atkins, age 23, with wife Eva, age 18. Also in the
household were West Martin 23, and the siblings of Thomas Atkins; Jim Atkins
age 15, Orvil Atkins 11, and Nellie Atkins 9.

1920 census of Crittenden County, Tyronza Township, shows Iva Lee Brazile, age
9, with his parents; Bob (Robert L.) Brazile, age 54, and Anna J. Brazile, age
48, both born in MS. They had children, Lester age 25, Jack age 20, Arnretti
age 18, Charley age 14, Lottie Dell age 12, Pauline age 11, Iva Lee age 9, and
Leonard age 7. All children were born in MS.

WILLIAMS, died
At
the time of the 1920 census of Crittenden County, Tyronza Township, the family
of Willie (age 39) and Lizzie (age 30) Williams were living next to T. J. and
Alma Atkins. They had a daughter, Nancy, age 11, and three sons; Roy, age 9, John, age 8, and Grady, age 5.
All family members were born in MS. Ora Williams would have been age 7 in 1920,
and was most likely a child of this family. The Willie and Lizzie Williams
family was in Union County, MS in 1910.

(Riley
Erwin Ledbetter, born Lee County, MS – Son of David Pinkney Ledbetter and
Fannie Bell Horton. Verification from Millenton
Ledbetter Descendents website. In 1920, the family of David P. Ledbetter
was living in Crittenden County, Tyronza Township, on Earle and Big Creek Road.
Riley E. was age 19, Croffus Lee 17, Rufus Jackson 15, Burley Eugene 12, Jesse
Paul 8, and Clyde Raymond 5. This Ledbetter family later moved to Mississippi
County, MO.
R. C. LEDBETTER, unmarked, possibly oldest grave.
(This person is probably related to the
David Pinkney Ledbetter family since he was buried next to Riley Erwin
Ledbetter. I find a death certificate in Shelby County, TN for Ed Ledbetter,
age about 24, who died December 24, 1916
of homicide, a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He had been born in Mississippi
and was a farmer, living at Wilson, Arkansas. His father was listed as F. Ledbetter,
his mother unknown. The death certificate information had been given by the
doctor, J. Parvin Carter, from St. Joseph Hospital. This would be the correct
age to have been Richard Edward
Ledbetter, son of David Pinkney Ledbetter and Josephine Blalock, who was
born October 21, 1895 in Lee County, MS and died before
1920. According to the Millenton
Ledbetter Genealogy, he was shot to death. Could the middle initial “C” on
this record for this unmarked grave, actually be “E”? According to the Shelby
County death certificate, he was buried by the county on December 31, 1916, 7
days after his death, cemetery not stated.)
