He succeeded to the estates of his uncles (his father's brothers ), Walter and
Drogo in Herfordshire, Berkshire, and other counties. He probabl y obtained the
barony of Clifford from his wife, Margaret de Tony. Margaret's father, Ralph,
was Lord of that fee in 1068. Walter's name occurs in the Wel sh annals as
lord of the castle of LLannymddyvri. He ravaged the lands of Rhy s ap
Gruffudd, who, finding his complaints to King Henry II disregarded, surpr ised
his castle (1157-9). In 1164, Walter is said to have slain Cadwagon, the son
of Meredudd ap Bleddyn, the ruler of Powys. The main part of his estates
passed to his great granddaughter, Matilda. His daughter, Rosamond, is famou

for having been the "Fair Rosamond", mistress of King Henry II.
