Lewis E. Coss, President of the Luverne Concrete company and realestate dealer of Luverne, is a
native of Rock county, having been born in Springwater twp, October 28,1874.
He has spent his entire life in the county. Mr. Coss was educated inthe district school and in the Luverne
high school. With the exception of five years when he was a child heresided on the farm in Springwater
until he was eighteen years of age; during the five years, he lived inLuverne with his parents.
At the age of eighteen years Mr. Coss engaged in teaching school forthree or four years. In 189 he
opened an insurance office,in Luvrne which he conducted alone until1900. That year he formed a
partnership with W.L. Buck, and for the next two years the partnersconducted a real estate and insurance
office. Since that time Mr. Coss has been in the business alone, havingan office in the Arcade building.
Mr. Coss is connected with several enterprises in Luverne. He is amember of the Knights of Pythias and
Modern Wodmen lodges.
The parents of our subject, Samuel and Mary (Bark) Coss, were earlysettlers of Rock county and
were natives of New York and Ohio, respectively. The mother came to thecounty in the spring of 1872,
the father in the fall of the same year, and they were married here thefollowing spring. They took as a
homestead claim in 1873 the northwest quarter of section 34, Springwatertownship, land which they still
own. With the exception of five years during the eighties, when theylived in Luverne, Mr. and Mrs. Coss
resided on the homestead until 1900; they have since been residents ofLuverne. Louis is the eldest of a
family of five children.......
Louis E. Coss was married in Luverne in 1898 to Irena J. Hileman, anative of Illinois and a daughter
of David and Rachael Hileman, who moved to Rock county about 1890. Mr.Hileman died in Luverne;
Mrs. Hileman is now a resident of Ottawa, Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Coss havethree children: Doretha,
Vernon H. and Gladys.
"Kandiyohi County received its first chiropractor in August of 1914,when Dr. Lewis E. Coss with his
family, Mrs. Coss and their three children, arrived in Willmar to maketheir home. They planned to stay
here but a short time, visiting relatives before moving to Montana whereDr. Coss had property and
expected to go into business. It was not his intention to practicechiropractics when coming here, taking it
up mainly for the benefit of his family and Mrs. Coss in particular, whohad suffered an injury to her spine
many years before. Her only relief had been through chiropractictreatments, and for this reason he had
taken it up.
"On occasion, he would give an adjustment to a relative andsometimes to a friend. The work soon
spread around of the benefits this new science afforded. Whilechiropractic was received with skepticism
by some, it wasn't long before people were calling constantly and askingfor treatments. Finally Dr. Coss
decided to open an office where people whould feel free to come fortreatments at their convenience. This
he did October 7, 1814, locating in the building known as the Loney Blockon Fifth Street West.
"Twice each week be make trips to Atwater to accommodate his manypatients in that area. One of
his Atwater patients, one George C. Mickelson, was so impressed with theresults he received from the
treatments that he and his wife, Josephine, decided to follow in Dr.Coss' footsteps, entering the Palmer
School of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa and graduating in the Spring of1916.
"By 1918, Dr. Coss' practice had grown to a point where he wasunable to handle it alone and it was
with a feeling of relief that he received Drs. George C. and JosephineMickelson as co-workers on April
10, 1918. Mrs. Mickelson, who devoted her services primarily to the careof women and children, worked
only part time so that she might have enough free time for their son.
"The chiropractic profession continued to flourish not only inWillmar, but throughout the state, and
the influx of chiropractors continued to grow and more and moreopposition from the medical profession
became apparent. Eventually the medical profession introduced a bill inthe legislature requiring all
doctors to be examined in the basic sciences, pathology, anatomy,hygiene, chemistry, physiology and
bacteriology, before they could be licensed by their own state board topractice in the State of Minnesota.
Since most of these sciences are not essential to the practice ofshiropractic, being primarily medical,
chiropractors were opposed to the passage of this bill and for a year ortwo were successful in blocking its
passage. However, the medics increased their pressure on legislators andlobbied continually for its
passage, and it was eventually passed. It proved to be a benefit tochiropractors, however, in that they
were hereby placed on the same level as the medical profession. Thechiropractic colleges soon added the
six basic sciences to their curriculum and chiropractors had littledifficulty making the Board.
"The Basic Science Board was made up of five members, Re.E. Scammon,P.H.D., S.H. Boyer, M.D.,
E.T.Bell, M.D., L.E. Coss, D.C., and A.E. Allen, D.D., all beingappointed by Governor Theodore
Christensen June 1, 1927. These five men worked together to formulatethe rules and regulations which
served to govern this body and to create more harmony and greaterunderstanding between the professions
through the years.
"Dr. Coss was held in high esteem by all who knew him and theShiropractic profession was fortunate
to have a man of Dr. Coss' caliber to serve their interests on this Boardin its beginning.. He was the long
term sppointee, serving on the Board for ten years. Because of this factand because of his supreme
intelligence, as well as his keen wit and humor, he accomplished much forchiropractic during this term
on this Board.
"Drs. Coss and Mickelson maintained offices in the Loney Block untilOctober 20, 1920 when they
moved to the Nelson-Hershey building of Fifth Street West and PacificAvenue. Their practice continued
to grow until larger quarters were again required and in February of 1923Dr. Mickelson moved his
offices to the Carlson Bros. Drug Building; Mrs. Mickelson going intosemi-retirement. It was about this
time that a second son was born to them and a few years later their elderson was stricken with ptomaine
poisoning and died.
"Dr. Coss remained in the Nelson-Hershey Building until October 27,1926 when he moved to the
Tribune Building where he practiced until ill health forced him intoretirement, death coming September
19, 1947
"Dr. Mickelson continued to practice in the Carlson Building up tothe time of his death, June 21,
1962.
"These two fine men served their profession honorably and extremelywell, all the years of their
professional lives."

The first meeting of Irena and Lewis took place at his grandmothers housein Luverne, Minnesota. Irena's
mother, Rachel, took her along when she went to visit her old friend fromArrowsmith, Illinois. While
they were there, Mrs. Barck's grandson who was staying with her whilegoing to High School, came in.
Irena said he had been ice skating and had the pinkest cheeks and bigblue eyes. There wedding made
both families very happy.
They were married 2 December, 1897 by M.E. Pastor - Rev. T.E. Jones athome. Irena's parents 49th
anniversary was the following day and all of her brothers and sisters andtheir families had come home to
celebrate the occasion. A family group picture was taken.[2098755.FTW]
