THE CRAIG FAMILY

The Craigs came from Scotland in 1684, settling in New Jersey. Andrew, born
in 1662, died in 1739 was the first generation to immigrate. His son, John,
born 1695, died in 1778, had a son, Samuel, born in early 1700's, married
Elizabeth McDonald first, and second, Jane Boyd and started to Western
Pennsylvania from New Jersey in 1766. In 1769, Samuel Craig bought a tract
of land on the eastern side of the Loyalhanna, of three hundred acres.

The people then were in constant dread of the Indians and in 1774, petitions
were sent to Governor Penn from Westmoreland County asking for protection,
one of them signed by John Shields, Arthur Denniston, John Denniston, Samuel
Craig, John Craig, Alexander Craig, Thomas Burbridge and others. A small
fort was erected on a hill on the Shields tract of land.

When colonies were beginning to resist the excessive taxation of the mother
country, a group of local men met at hannastown in 1775 and drew up
"Westmoreland's Declaration of Independence" and organized a militia to
drill for service. Colonel John Proctor was Commander of the 1st Battalion
Wetmoreland County Provincials. All the Craig men who were old enough to
bear arms were a part of this Battalion. Samuel was a Lieutenant and was
taken prisoner on Chestnut Ridge, his beautiful bay mare was found dead, and
the Lieutenant never returned.

John, the oldest son of Samuel Craig, was born in 1753, married Martha Clark
and was a Captain. They migrated to Freeport and Armstrong County. The
Giffens in this community are descendants of John Craig.

Alexander Craig, born 1755, a Brigadier-General, died in 1832 and was buried
in Congruity. He was with the Army of General Washington when they crossed
the Delaware, participating in the battles of Trenton, Princeton and others.
They waded rivers, water breast-high, ice floating, no tents, only a blanket
at night, and in the mornings their hair was often frozen to the ground.
After the Revolution, he served in State Militia and was presented the
Rattlesnake Flag, (story of which appears separately). He married Jane
Clark and lived on land later known as the Edward Craig and Machesney farms,
and were parents of James, Samuel, Alexander, Elizabeth who married Major
James Moorhead, who obtained an appropriation from the State to aid in
building the bridge in 1832 across the Loyalhanna. One member of State
Legislature opposed, saying the Loyalhanna was nothing but a "frog pond".
Major Moorhead, stated, "he had lately rescued from drowning something that
bore a much stronger resemblance to the gentleman who had been speaking than
it did a frog," and he secured the appropriation.

Other children of General Craig were: Sarah, Maria, Margaret Campbell Craig,
who wrote much of the Craig history which was continued by her
granddaughter, Jane Maria Craig.

Samuel Craig Jr., born in 1759, buried in Congruity Cemetery was 1st
Lieutenant in Co. of Captain Robert Orr in the Lochrey expedition in which
all of our soldiers were killed or taken prisoner by the Indians. It is
said that Samuel Jr. at one time owned a thousand acres in Derry Township,
part of which was later farms of Brinker, Rugh and Patterson. He married
Elizabeth Shields and they were parents of John who married Mary Kirkpatrick
who were the parents of Edward S. and Elizabeth S. (Bessie), whom many of us
knew; Martha, Jane, Alexander married Rebecca Moorhead; Samuel married
Sallie Hogg.

Rose Craig married William Elliott, a merchant of Franklin Co. and were
parents of nine children, most of whom lived in Ohio.

Elizabeth Craig, born 1757, died 1826, married Joseph Thom and were parents
of thirteen children and settled in Armstrong and Jefferson Counties. Three
of their grandsons died in the Civil War.

Esther Craig married William McClelland and lived near Craig's Mill on the
Loyalhanna and were parents of seven children.

Mary married a Mr. Wills.

Andrew married Elizabeth Freeman, who had been captured by the Indians after
the burning of Hannastown and kept for two years. She had red hair which
the Indians disliked and was nearly killed when she "ran the gauntlet."
They were the owners of land later known as the J. C. Caldwell and David
McKowen farms.

Jane, born 1767 and died 1833, married Peter Wallace and their children
were: Jane, married James Patterson, whose daughter Rebecca Jane married
Robert J. Patterson, whose son, Thomas Sproul, married Rachel Binkey and two
of their children reside in this community. A daughter, Anna Rebecca,
married William R. Beattie, some of whose family reside in New Alexandria.

Other children of Jane and Peter Wallace were: Richard, Mary, Nancy,
Rebecca, Rachel who married John Cunningham (one of the founders of
Blairsville), and two of their great granddaughters now live in Greensburg:
Anna C. Silsley, and Jane (Mrs. Henry Seidel), daughters of the late
Attorney John C. Silsley. Two of the Wallace sons married daughters of Rev.
Adam Torrance, the first pastor of the Presbyterian Church of New
Alexandria.

Joseph Craig, born 1770, died 1842, married Nancy Moorhead and owned part of
his father's farm, later known as the J. C. Giffen farm. He had a grist
mill and was one of three men who built the first bridge at New Alexandria.
Their children were: William, Elizabeth, Jane, Samuel, Joseph, John, Rebecca
who married John Shields and lived in Armstrong County; and Josiah Moorhead
Craig who married Jane Craig, whose only child was Jane Maria Craig, born
1848, died 1914 and continued compilation of the Craig history.

Agnes or Nancy Craig, born 1773, died 1817, married Samuel Moorhead and were
parents of ten children. Their son, Samuel married Martha Bell and their
children were: Nancy, Martha, Elizabeth, who married James M. Shields, whose
daughter, Margaret Alice, married James G. Cook, (well known pharmacist),
whose daughter, Elizabeth (Mrs. Jesse Caldwell), her son and family are
residents of New Alexandria. A granddaughter of James G. Cook, Miss
Margaret McDivitt also resides in New Alexandria.

The other children of Samuel Craig, were: Rebecca who married Joseph Shields
and lived in Armstrong County; William married Esther McConahy.

>From the pioneer Craigs, have come military men, ministers, doctors,
missionaries, attorneys, business men, some migrating to other counties and
states.

This starts with his grandfather, John Craig who was a native of Londonderry, Ireland, immigrated to the USA and participated in the War of the Revolution. He then settled in Washington County, PA and maried Mary Patterson who was also of Ireland birth and Washington County resident. In 1817 John Craig came to Ohio and purchased 500 acres in Coshocton County, and he moved his family there in 1818. He was a prominent member of the Democratic party and served as justice of the peace for many years. They had two children and only William is reported. John died at about age 62 in 1824
