He was buried in Waltham Abbey, Holy Cross, Essex, England. [Pullen010502.FTW]

Last Anglo-Saxon King of England, reputedly named heir by the duringEdward (his brother-in-law). After becoming King, he crushed thefor ces of his brother Tostig & Harold III Hardraade of Norway, whoclaimed the thro ne, at Stamford Bridge. He was killed in the Battleof Hastings by the army of a successful claimant to the throne,William the Conqueror of Normandy.

REF: British Monarchy Official Website: On Edward's death in 1066, theking's council elected his brother-in-law, Harold Godwinson (Jan-Oct1066), king. In September , Harald of Norway invaded England and wasdefeated by Harold at the Battle of S tamford Bridge near York.Meanwhile, William, Duke of Normandy (whom Harold had acknowledged in1065 as Edward III's successor and who was also related to Edwar d bymarriage) had landed in Sussex. Harold rushed south and on 14 October1066 h is army was defeated near Hastings and Harold was killed.

David Humiston Kel ley's explication of a possible descent of Harold IIfrom Aethelred II appears i n the Festchrift for Charles Evans editedby Neil Thompson. Kelley's paper, whic h is an enlargement of evidencepresented by Lundie W. Barlow in the New Eng. Hi st. & Gen. Register inthe 1950s, shows the descent of land from a son of Aethel red to EarlGodwin, Harold's father. The argument is strong, especially since it is a group of manors that descended together. Bierbrier, however, inthe Genealo gists' Magazine, denies the lineage and indicates thatGodwin received this land as a unit from the Danish conquerors. I havenot seen any contemporary evidence that would take settle thisquestion either way. The key article on the propose d descent of HaroldII from Aethelred I is David H. Kelley, "The House of Aethel red," inLindsay S. Brooke, ed., Studies in Genealogy and Family History inTribu te to Charles Evans on the Occasion of His Eightieth Birthday_(Association for the Promotion of Scholarship in Genealogy, Ltd.,Occasional Publication No. Two, 1989). As I posted earlier, thedescent of land provides strong evidence for th e descent of HaroldII's father, Earl Godwine, from Aethelred I (not II), but it is alsopossible that the land was expropriated and presented to Godwine andhis possession of it does not indicate genealogical descent.

Ealdorman/Earlof East Anglia: 1044. Ealdorman/Earl of Wessex and Kent: 1053. Earlof Herfordshire: 1057. King: Jan. 6, 1066 -Oct. 14, 1066.

There was no royal blood in his veins. Opportunity, designation by Edward the Confessor, and the absence of a suitable candidate from the royal house justified his seizure of the throne when Edward died (5 Jan. 1066). His earlier career was that of a great nobleman and successful warrior. His failure to support his brother Tostig, earl of Northumbria, when Northumbria revolted in 1065, turned his brother into a bitter enemy. When the succession problem became immediate, Harold had himself hastily crowned (6 Jan.). He was opposed by William of Normandy, Harold Hardrada (king of Norway), and his brotherTostig. (The Oxford Illustrated History of the British Monarchy, by J. Cannon& R. Griffiths, 19 88)

He was 44 when he succeeded to the throne. His attractive personality was recognized even by his enemies. (The Oxford Book of RoyalAnecdotes, edited by Elizabeth Longford, 1989)

This Englishman was very tall and handsome, remarkable for his physical strength, his courage and eloquence, his ready jests and acts ofvalour. But whatwere all these gifts to him without honour, which is the rootof all good? (in the Orderic Vitalis, in The Oxford Book of Royal Anecdotes , edited by Elizabeth Longford, 1989)

He shared his father's banishment in 1051, going with his brother Leofwine to Ireland. He returned with a fleet in 1052 and joined his father in the advance on Southwark which brought about their reinstatement. (Encyclopedia Brittanica, 1970 edition)

1064: According to theBaye ux tapestry, he wasdriven out of his courseand arrested by Guy of Ponthieu, who was made by Duke William to surrender him. He fought for William against Cona n of Brittany, became William's man and took some solemn oath. (Encyclopedia B rittanica, 1970 edition)

The best-knownstory of Harold is probably that of his death as a result of an arrow in the eye, an event clearly illustrated in the BayeuxTapestry, but so close to a scene of a man being felled by a sword as to suggest that it took more than an arrow to dispatch the king. (The Oxford Book of Royal Anecdotes, edited by Elizabeth Longford,1989)

In this attack the greater part were slain; but the remainder, hewingaway with their swords, captu red the standard. Meanwhile, a showerof arrows fell round King Harold, and he h imself was piercedin the eye. A crowd of horsemen now burst in, and the King, already wounded, was slain. (by Henry of Huntingdon, in The OxfordBook of Royal Anecdotes, edited by Elizabeth Longford, 1989)

One of the horsemen was said to have hacked off Harold's leg, for which unchivalrous act William, Duke of Nor mandy, dismissedhim. (The OxfordBook of RoyalAnecdotes, edited by Elizabeth Longford, 1989)

Harold died withhis 2 brothers, Gyrth and Leofwine, on the same day, while in battle at Senlac. He had been so mutilated in the fighting that his body could not be found among the dead who littered the Field of Senlac. ( Royalty Magazine)
