Humphrey DE BOHUN I7,46,47,48 was born between 1000 and 1020 in Normandy, France.50,1183 He died between 1080 and 1093.50,1183 He was also known as With The Beard. [Pullen010502.FTW]

A cousin of William the Conqueror.

Received one estate in Tellesford (or Tethford or Talesford) Norfolk, according to db.

Excerpted from Les Seigneurs de Bohon by Jean LeMelletier, Coutances:
Arnaud-Bellee, 19 78: Humphrey I, also called The Old, was the founderof the house of Bohon. He i s mainly known as a companion of Williamthe Conqueror at the conquest of Englan d and as the founder of theBohon priory. Old English books designate him Humfri dus cum Barba orHumphrey with the Beard. His
beard distinguished him from othe r Norman knights of the periodbecause they habitually shaved. Humphrey was the godfather of Williamand was certainly close to him because we see the names of William, duchess Mathilde, and their children associated with Humphrey'schildre n. The oldest mention of Humphrey that we know of is inWilliam's journals. It confirms a donation
made at the abbey of St. Trinite du Mont at Rouen by Gilbe rt, Osbern'svassal. William's signature is accompanied by that of Humphrey, son ofRichard, listed with the rest of William's men. In 1062 we findHumphrey agai n with William at the Hogue de Biville, along with Rogerde Montgomery and Willi am, son of Osbern. At a meal in the middle ofthe road, William said they should be free like the common people ofthe neighboring priory of Heauville. In recou nting the story, a monksaid that a fellow diner criticized William's liberalism . Not takingtoo kindly to criticism, William threatened to strike him with asho ulder of pork. According to a paper from about 1060, the knightHumphrey, a ric h and noble man, granted the priory he founded, St.Georges de Bohon, to the abb ey of St. Martin of Marmoutier. Humphreytells us:

"with the inspiration of G od and the patronage of lord earl Williamfor the relief of my soul, and those o f the late Richard of Mary, myfather, and of the late Billeheude, my mother...i n the octave of thePentecost before the venerable father Geoffrey, bishop of Co utances...I protect the abbey of St. Martin, the servants Arnouf, Heribert, and Roger, and the other people whose names are inscribed here."

The authenticit y of this act, of which the original documents wereunfortunately destroyed, doe s not seem to bear to be contested. Thelatest dates proposed for the founding o f the priory come from datesof estate foundings (from Martene and Miss Gantier 1068; Gerville andthe Bernard abbey 1092; L. Musset between 1066 & 1087). Howev er, thetitle of earl was given to William before 1066 and the founding of thepr iory was earlier. Originally the priory was settled by four secularcanons. The act of including the priory with the abbey was preciselyto entrust it with the lands of a knight. (A knight cared for andprotected his lands and those who liv ed there from thieves, warringlords, etc.) In later years St. Martin became ve ry popular. It was atMarmoutier that William himself joined the Battle Abbey, f ounded tocommemorate the Battle of Hastings where it was fought. A documentsign ed by Sir William, duke of the Normands, before 1066 shows thatHumphrey de Boho n gave a garden from his fief (holdings) in Puchay tothe nuns of St. Amand in R ouen for the repose of his soul and those ofhis three wives when one of his dau ghters became religious. Themonastery of St. Leger in Preaux was given the deed s to Barbeville,St. Marie's Church, the town of Carentan, and the neighboring r ectory.Later Humphrey bequeathed the monastery a convent that his seconddaughte r entered. Humphrey's sons Robert and Richard agreed with hisactions. By 1066 H umphrey had been married three times, two daughtershad entered the convent, and sons Robert and Richard were old enoughto assume their inheritance. Humphrey w as a senior citizen. Wace citedamong the soldiers of Hastings: E de Bohon the o lder Humphrey.Humphrey's name, a bit distorted, is seen on a majority of other listsof William's battle companions. As Wace's poem was written more than ahund red years after the events happened, some feel th Parents: Richard II DE MERI and Billeheude DE ST. SAUVEUR.

Children were: Daughter DE BOHUN, Robert DE BOHUN, Richard DE BOHUN, Humphrey DE BOHUN II, Enguerran DE BOHUN.

Humphrey DE BOHUN II7,46,47,48 was born after 1045 in Gloucester, England.50,1183 He died about 1129 in Of Wiltshire, England.50,1183 He was also known as The Great. [Pullen010502.FTW]

Excerpted from Les Seigneurs de Bohon by Jean LeMelletier , Coutances:
Arnaud-Bellee, 1978: .The sources for this branch of the Bohons, earlsof Hereford, Essex, and Northampton, are all English. The name Bohonwas ch anged to Boun, Boon, Bowne, etc. It was later considered tosignify master or bo ss. Humfridus, Onfroi, and Honfroy are translatedas Humphrey. The frequent repe tition of the first name Humphreycauses a lot of confusion. The English begin t heir line with the firstHumphrey born in Great Britain, who is our Humphrey II. Humphrey II,known as Humphrey the Magnificent or Humphrey the Great, benefitt edfrom the favor of King William Rufus (son of William the Conqueror). His signa ture is on a number of papers of Henry I. Thus we can followhim around England (1103-1109), then in Normandy at Avranches (1113)and Rouen (1119), then in Engl and (1121), back to Rouen (1125), andback to England (1128). Humphrey II gave t he church of Bishop Streetin Salisbury (Wiltshire) to the Lewes Abbey (next to Newhaven) and thechurch of Cheleworth to the St. Dennis priory (Southampton). H e was awitness at the founding of Savigney Abbey by Ralph de Fougeres.Humphrey married Maud (Mathilda or Mahaut, who died 1142), daughter ofEdward de Salisbur y, between 1087 and 1100. The dowry gave himimportant estates in the Wiltshire area and the barony of Trowbridge. This was the first of a series of marriages w hich benefitted theBohons. They had a daughter, Maud, and a son, Humphrey III. HumphreyII died around 1129.
