still rebels who refused to compromise. King John aquiesce dto Reginald's claims to the de Braose estates in Wales in May1216. He became L ord of Brecon, Abergavenny, Builth and otherMarcher Lordships
but was very muc h a vassal of Llewelyn Fawr,Prince of Gwynedd and now his father-in-law. Henry III restoredReginald to favour and the Bramber estates (confiscated fromWilliam by K. John) in 1217. At
this seeming betrayal, Rhys andOwain, Reginald's neph ews who were princes of Deheubarth, wereincensed and they took Builth (except t he castle). Llewelyn Fawralso became angry and beseiged Brecon.
Reginald event uallysurrendered to Llewelyn and gave up Seinenydd (Swansea). By 1221they were at war again with Llewelyn laying seige to Builth. Theseige was relieved by Hen ry III's forces. From this
time onLlewelyn tended to support the claims of Reg inald's nephew Johnconcerning the de Braose lands. Reginald was a witness to th e re-issue of Magna Carta by HenryIII in 1225.

In a discussion of the Abergavenny Castle, Jeff Thomas, 1996, says t hat William inherited his title from his mother, Bertha, a daughter of Milo Fit zWalter. ( Also, The dates may conflict with those at Bruce Tompsett's site.). Jeff says that "...de Braose was quite possibly the cruelest and most hated o f all the Norman Marcher Lords.,..., time and time again seems to have gone out of his way to commit acts of cruelty that went beyond his contemporaries. Alt hough some would say his family eventually got what they deserved, the extincti on of the male line and a forfeiture of all lands, de Braose stands out as an e xample of what the native Welsh population were up against, and why they rebell ed so ferociously against the Norman invaders." One of the atrocities that had occurred previous to his tenure was that of the "Massacre of Abergavenny in 11 75. Henry, the third son of Milo FitzWalter, Earl of Hereford, was killed by S eisyll ap Dyfnwal in 1175. William the fourth son did not live to succeed. Ma hel, the fifth son, was killed a little later in 1175 in Bronllys Castle, when a stone fell on his head during a fire. There was no other male heir, and Brec knockshire and Upper Gwent passed to William de Braose... . William De Braose decided to avenge the death of his uncle Henry. On the pretext he summoned Sei syll ap Dyfnwal, his son Geoffrey and a number of other Welshmen from Gwent to Abergavenney Castle, and there they were murdered out of hand. At the same tim e de Braose's retainers ravaged Seisyll's lands, killed his son Cadwaladr and c aptured his wife." He rebuilt Abergavenny Castle, Wales, pre 1175. Title bec ame extinct and later went to Beauchamp.

One interesting story from Joan and Llywelyn's marriage: a bout 1230/1231,
Llywelyn returned home unexpectedly to find Joan alone in thei r bedroom with
William de Braose. This story is recounted in "Here Be Dragons " and one
other "purely historical" source. William was later hanged on Llywel yn's order.

From "The Genealogist" article by Wm. Addams Reitwiesner: He was discovered in Joan's chambers, accused of being her lover, and promptly
and p ublicly hanged. While the story that William and Joan were lovers has
been ge nerally accepted, the Annals of Margam (in T. Gale, ed , Historiae
Britannicae et Anglicanae Scriptores XX (Oxford, 1687), 2-18, [anno] MCCXXX)
implies that the "intimacy" was devised by Llywelyn to avenge himself on
William for polit ical injuries inflicted not only by William but by the entire
Braose family; t he execution was hailed by the Welsh as a vindication of a
blood-feud against the Braoses dating from at least 1176. Indeed, shortly
after the execution Ll ywelyn wrote to William's widow Eva and to William
Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, Eva's brother, stating, in effect, that so far as
he was concerned, the intend ed marriage between Llywelyn's son Dafydd and
Eva's daughter Isabella could go forward as planned, and that he could not
have prevented the Welsh magnates f rom taking their vengeance. See J. Goronwy Edwards, Calendar of Ancient Corres pondence concerning Wales (Board of Celtic Studies of the University of Wales, History and Law Series, 2)(Cardiff, 1935), pp 51-52, nos. XI.56a, 56b. The ma rriage in fact took place three months later.
