"Europaische Stammtafeln, ii, 20, however, lists Robert's second wife,
Ermengarde of Anjou, widow of Geoffrey II Ferreol of Gatinais and daughter of
Fulk III "Nerra" of Anjou, as the mother of Hildegarde. According to ES Robert
married Helie circa 1033 and disowned he r in 1046. Robert married secondly
circa 1048 Ermengarde of Anjou. Hildegarde was born probably in 1050.
Stuart Royalty for Commoners, line 154, says Robe rt married, firstly, in 1035,
Ermengarde, and married, secondly, circa 1055, H elie. Hildegarde is reported
as born circa 1033, and daughter of Helie. (Stuar t usually tries to follow ES,
I believe, but this apparently threw him.) Earli er, in line 91, Stuart reports
Ermengarde marrying Robert I in 1048 which is c onsistent with ES.
Stuart's oddities aside, the chronology and conclusions pre sented in ES do
raise questions about the parentage of Hildegarde.

from Robert. If that were correct Hildegarde would almost su rely be the
daughter of Helie. I assume that whoever worked on the ES table wa s
acquainted with this earlier literature and had some basis for giving the
f irm date, 1046.
ES ii, 20 says Helie b. 1016; d. after 1055 (which, of course, includes
1109). This same information appears in ES iii, 434. There is says
"verstossen um 1050" which tightens the chronology. I still presume

Robert de Mellent, natural son of king Henry the firs t, was created by that
monarch earl of Gloucester, which titles became extinct upon the death of
William second earl of Gloucester 23 November 1173.
He w as an illigitimate son of King Henry I. According to "The Dictionary of
Nation al Biography", his mother was probably an unknown French woman. This
birth wa s before Henry became king. On insufficient grounds some claim his
mother to be Nesta, dau. of Rhys ap Tewdr, King of Dehubarth. In his "Complete
Peerage" , Cokayne is of the opinion that his mother was most likely Sibyl
Corbet. He fought at the Battle of Bremule in 1119, where his father defeated
King Louis VI of France. In 1122 he was created Earl of Gloucester. In 1123,
he led a f orce to assist in the capture of the castle of Brionne, which was
held by rebe l Norman barons. In 1126 he had custody of the imprisoned rebel,
Robert, Duke of Normandy. In 1127 he did homage to the Empress Matilda,
recognizing her a s his father's successor to the throne. When Stephen was
chosen as king over the Empress Matilda, Robert did homage to him for his
English lands. In 1137 he accompanied King Stephen to Normandy where a quarrel
ensued. He then threw his support to Matilda, who was in Normandy, and obtained
the surrender of Cae n and Bayeux to her husband, Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of
Anjou. In Sep. 11 39 he landed in England with Matilda and took her to Arundel
Castle. He becam e her commander-in-chief in the civil war which followed.
Robert was captured by Stephen's forces, but Stephen had also been previously
captured by Matilda' s. The two were returned to their respective camps in an
even exchange. Mati lda sent Robert fo Anjou to attempt to convince her
husband, Geoffrey, to come to her aid. Geoffrey declined to help until he had
conquered NOrmandy, so Ro bert joined in his campaign. However, hearing that
Matilda was besieged at Ox ford, he hurried back to her assistance. He took
Matilda's and Geoffrey's son , Henry (the future King Henry II) with him. In
1143 Robert defeated Stephen at Wilton and in 1144 he blockaded Malmesbury,
Stephen refusing battle. Matil da's support had gradually dwindled, so Robert
was unable to continue to press her cause. In 1147 Robert sent Henry back to
