Geoffrey de Mandeville, who like his fellow (the 2nd (meaning Algernon Capell,
2nd Earl of Essex of the 1641 creation)) Earl of Essex of the present creation
was Constable of the Tower of London, was created Earl of Essex in 1140 by King
Stephen. He already held numerous manors in Berks, Bucks, Essex, Herts, and
M iddlesex, which had belonged to his grandfather, another Geoffrey, at the time
of the Domesday Survey in 1086. The family originated in Normandy, but precise
ly where is unclear, since there are several place names there akin to Mandevil
le (which seems originally to have been in Latin 'Magna Villa' or "Great
Town") . De Mandeville later sided with the Empress Maud, who granted him
a more gene rously framed charter, including a clause making the post of Constable
of the T ower hereditary. Later still de Mandeville again sided with Stephen
but subseq uently rebelled yet again. His son was recreated Earl of Essex by
Maud in Jan 1155/6, the rebellious habits of the father and perhaps also the
appointive nat ure of earldoms at the time requiring a regrant.
After the death of the 3r d de Mandeville Earl, right to the title passed through
a female branch but the se descendants of the original de Mandevilles took the
old family name (Mandevi lle) and were recognised as Earls of Essex in the time
of King's John and Henry III. [Burke's Peerage, page 1004]

Cokayne's "Complete Peerage" (Essex, pp. 113-116), says that, for reasons
that are somewhat obscure, KING STEPHEN, made him Earl o f Essex, then proceeds
to detail Geoffrey's frequent switching of support for t he EMPRESS MAUD and
for KING STEPHEN in their contest for the throne. About Oc t 1143, he was accused
of treason, but he ridiculed the charge. He was, howeve r, arrested and imprisoned
until he surrendered his castles to avoid being hang ed. He then broke into
open revolt, seized and fortified the Abbey of Ramsey, sacked Cambridge, and
ravaged the fen country, until, when beseiging Burwell Ca stle, having removed
his headpice on account of the heat, he was mortally wound ed by an arrow. Parents:

Note : I have reversed the order of marriage which MCS has, because it certainly
ma kes more sense according to the birthdates of the children. Both of Maud's
hus bands lived to be fairly old, making it very difficult, even doubtful, if
she m arried both. I note that Ancestral Roots did not name her Maud de Mandeville
( I think that the citation implies a prior marriage to someone from Costow,
Wilt shire (possibly Hugh de Boclande?)), and that, according to Burke's Peerage,
Ge offrey Fitz Piers did not use his mother's relationship to claim the Earldom
of Essex. He used his wife, Beatrice de Say's descendancy from Beatrice de Mande
ville sister of Geoffrey de Mandeville, 1st Earl of Essex. Thus, even though
M CS clearly states her as Maud de Mandeville, daughter of Geoffrey de Mandeville

Cokayne's " Complete Peerage" (Essex, pp. 118-120). At his brother's
death he was with THIE RRY, COUNT OF FLANDERS. Returning home, he was girded
with the sword of the Ear ldom [of Essex], and obtained possession of all his
brother's lands, except the office of Constable of the Tower. During the 1173
revolt he remained faithful to KING HENRY II and was a commander in the north
of France. In 1177 he went on crusade with Philippe, Count of Flanders [the son
of the above-mentioned THIER RY]. They assisted the Count of Tripoli in his ineffectual
siege of Harenc, bei ng thus fruitlessly occupied on the day of the great battle
of Ramleh, where Ki ng Baldwin IV of Jerusalem scattered the hosts of Saladin.
In 1179 he attended KING LOUIS VII OF FRANCE on his pilgrimage to Canterbury,
and was an ambassador to the EMPORER FREDERICK BARBAROSSA (RIN 2100) in 1181.
In 1184 he assisted Count Philippe of Flanders against BALDWIN, COUNT OF HAINAULT.
He was one of t he four generals who were appointed in 1187 to conduct the war
with France. In 1189 he was joint Justiciar of England. He died in Normandy while

Charles 'Martel', Mayor Of The Palace Of Austrasia ruled the
Merovingian Franks from A.D. 719 to 741. He use d only the title
of Mayor of the Palace, but he actually had the power of a
k ing. Most of the lawful Frankish kings of this period were
weak. In 732, Charl es defeated the invading Moslems in the
famous Battle of Tours near Poitiers. For repeatedly attacking
the Moslems, Charles later received the title of Mart el,
meaning the Hammer. He built an army of mounted men by seizing
church
es tates. Charles supported Saint Boniface in his reform of the
Frankish church.

Charles Martel became Mayof the the Palace of Austraisa when his father,
Pepin II, died in 714. That year he was imprisoned by his step-mother,
Plectudis, but escaped later in the year to lead the Aust rasian and
Neustrian nobles. The next year the new King, Chilperic II, refuse d
to act as a puppet to the nobles, and was backed by the Aquitaine duke
Eud o, who was by then semi-independent from Frankish sovergnty.
In 719, Charles d efeated Eudo and took Chilpric hostage. Eudo's terms
for mercy were that Chil peric would be recognized as the sole ruler of
the Franks, and that Charles wo uld control all royal offices (i.e., as Mayor).
Eudo had no other choice but t o accept. In 720 Chilperic II died,
Theuderic IV became King, Charles was str ipped of his positions, Eudo
was able to attain full independence, and Charles was preoccupied
with pushing back Saxon invader
