Newspaper article; Mr. Edwin Alberthal and Miss Jennie Devore were united in marriage Monda y night at the home ofthe brides parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Devore. Rev. John Barnhart offic iated. The bride was dressed in white chiffon over messaline and a white veil. She wore a sp ray of orange blossoms. A luncheon for family and friends wasserved afterwards. NOTES - To Ada Price and David Devore on the 24th of February 1886, in the mining town of Glo be, Arizona, was born their second child, a tow-headed daughter, Jennie. She and her older si ster were joined by 6 other brothers and sisters, of whom four lived to maturity. Jennie gre w up on the family's Wheatfields Ranch north of Globe enjoying good health although she did c atch whooping cough. There were no near neighbors, but it was fun growing up on a cattle ranc h, and this was evidenced all through Jennie's life by a quick sense of humor. She played bal l, dolls, rode horseback and swam. She would sneak out an go dance with the nearby Apache Ind ians. Globe was 13 miles away and was visited two or three times a year to buy cloth or cloth ing. The family grew its own food. Most social activities were centered around the one room s chool house.About 20 to 30 students attended. Jennie walked the two miles from the ranch. Mrs . Meddler, her first teacher, said Jennie was a good speller but giggled all the time. Shewa s also quick to blush, so she was gair game for the boys to tease. She won two scholarships f rom the Superintendent of Public Instruction to attend Globe High School, but she continued h er schooling in the one room school. Jennie then went to Tempe Normal School 1906-1908 whic h became Arizona State University. When she attended college, she lived in the dorms DEV-24) . She was in the last semester of her junior year when she had to quit and return home becasu e her mother was ill and she was needed. It was during one of her trips home from Tempe, sh e became the first white woman over the Apache Trail. When her mother recovered, she went t o work in Sulton's Merchantile Store.While there Jennie became acquainted with a dark-eyed, h andsome young man who was a fellow employee, Edwin Alberthal. She learned to recognize the ho ofbeats of Ed's horse. After an acquaintance of four years, they were married in the home o f her parents on December 9, 1912. At the time of his marriage, Ed was manager of Brookner Co . A year later, Mary Alice was born and Ed became a partner in the East Globe Grocery. Rober t arrived four years later. Their early married life consisted of hard work, not enough money , but lots of fun, laughter and many friends. Jennie was 43 when her last child, Virginia, wa s born. By this time Ed was a partner in Barkley and Co., a fuel and feed store. Jennie wa s a good homemaker but was short. She stood on a box to wash dishes and to cook on thestove . In 1942, the family moved south of Phoenix on a small citrus ranch and moved again in 194 7 to Huntington Park, California. Her husband died suddenly in 1951. Jenniecontinued on, he r three children had all married. She managed some rental houses on the same property as he r home. She took an Hawaiian cruise with a friend on the S.S.Lurline in October 1952. Later i n life she moved in with her youngest daughter, Virginia. One day, out of the blue, she aske d to be baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her baptism wa s January 27, 1968. She died Sunday morning April 19, 1970, the last of her brothers and sist ers. Her funeral was conducted by Bishop Earl Redd. Life story (DEV-25).
Andrew Boyd remembers his grandmother as an excellent cook who liked to spoil him any meals h e wanted so they had hamburgers and sausage sandwiches regularly. They would often go out t o eat and would travel by bus and trolley to the shopping area in Huntington Park to buy toys . Andy remembers she got him an expensive model of a P-51airplane once. Another time she go t him a cowboy and indian set with many individual pieces. He set up many an ambush on the sh elves and floor of her front room. He would sleep in the front room in a pull-down Murphy bed . He could also watch any amount of television he wanted as long as he didn't interfere wit h his grandma's soap operas that came on in the afternoon. Jennie was a great cook but she di dn't write down her recipes because she did everything by memory. Her dinner rolls were justl y famous for being the best tasting rolls anyone ever tasted. After her death, they had her i ngrediant list but not the measurments. Others came close to her rolls, but no one matched he r.
