James ELGIN^7,188 was born about 1715 in Charles Co, MD. He died about Aug 1787 in Abbeville, SC. Personal Data: James "has been the most difficult of this family to trace. The little that is known had to be gleaned from records and the process of eliminat ion had to be applied, hopefully correctly. James is first mentioned in the wil l of his father, George, in 1748 and then again in his mother's will in 1756. H e purchased two tracts of land from his brother, George (Jr.) and his wife Susa nnah in 1753. He paid 120 Pounds Sterling for 125 acres of "Belayne's Addition" and "Belayne's Hills".
He was listed as a carpenter.
He is known to have p urchased land around 1760 but then he appears in Prince William County, VA in 1 780 to 1785, where several records exist and a census record lists him and some of his children. Several of his children have been gleaned from records butthe order of birth has not been established. I will attempt to establish some orde r by using the known facts about the children.
