The son of King Ethelred II the Unready (reigned 978-1016), Edmund defied his father's orders by marrying (1015) the widow of one of the Danish lords th en occupying English territory. Nevertheless, when Canute invaded England late r in 1015, Edmund raised an army in northern England and ravaged regions that w ould not rally to his cause. Upon Edthelred's death (April 1016), a small nu mber of councillors and citizens of London proclaimed Edmund as their ruler, bu t a larger body of nobles at Southampton declared for Canute. Edmund then laun ched a series of offensives against his rival. He recovered Wessex and relieve d London of a siege before being decisively defeated by Canute at Ashington, Es sex on October 18. In the ensuing peace settlement, Edmund retained Wessex, wh ile Canute held the lands north of the River Thames. After Edmund died (probab ly of natural causes), Canute became sole ruler of England. He had no children, either legitimate or illegi timate. He was an albino. Edward, the only surviving son of Emma and Aethelr ed the Unready, had come to England in 1041 at the invitation of Harthacnut who received him into his ownfamily. Although he had been living as an exile in No rmandy for 25 years and musthave returned to his country as a complete stranger , he was acclaimed king in London in 1042 even before Harthacnut had been burie d. He was crowned at Winchester on Easter Day 1043. He lived in Normandy (10 16-1041) and his early reignwas dominated by rivalry between his Norman favouri tes and his father-in-law.(Internet) 1043: In this year Edward was consecrat ed king in Winchester on Easter Sunday with great ceremony; this year Easter wa s on 3 April. ArchbishopEadsige consecrated him, and full instructed him befor e all the people, clearly reminding him of his duty as king and his responsibli ty to the nation as awhole. In the autumn of that year (1043), accompanied by th e three most powerful of theearls, Godwine of Wessex, Leofric of Mercia and Siw ard of Northumbria, he wentagain to Winchester and possessed himself of all the wealth of his mother (an indescribable number of things of gold and silver), a nd at the same time deprivedher of her lands. (Introduction to Anglo-Saxon En gland, by P. Blair,1959, 1977; The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles; 1953, 1960) King Edward, under obligation forhis kingdom to the powerful Earl Godwin, married hi s daughter Edith. But Earl Godwin and his sons Sweyn and Harold proved so danger ous that Edward banishedthem. (by Henry of Huntingdon, in The Oxford Book of Ro yal Anecdotes, edited by Elizabeth Longford, 1989) Edward's marriage in no w ay altered his resolve to remain celibate. He packed his wife off to a nunnery when opportunity allowed. In the Bayeux tapestry Edward the Confessor is sho wn wearing whatmay be loosely called a crown, but which is really no more than a narrow fillet of metal, presumably gold, which encircles his head and from wh ich, towards the front, risethree gold fleurs-de-lys. He carries a sceptre in h is left hand. (Introduction to Anglo-Saxon England, by P. Blair, 1959, 1977) He had a kinglybearingandbushy beard, poor judgement and a childlike nature. (The Oxford Illustrated History of the British Monarchy, by J. Cannon & R. G riffiths,1988) Obsessively religious, he made contact with the reforming pap acy and his finest monumentis Westminster Abbey. (The Oxford Illustrated Hist oryof the British Monarchy, by J. Cannon & R. Griffiths, 1988) He was called "the Confessor" becauseheconfessed, or truly believed, the Christian faith. He builtWestminsterAbbey.Edward was canonized (made a saint) in 1161. He was ca nonized (1161)and hisbodytranslated three times (1163, 1269, 1557). A posthumou s cult bestowed on Edward the reputation of a saintly and beneficent king, thel ast of his line. (The Oxford Illustrated History of the British Monarchy, byJ. Cannon& R.Griffiths, 1988) "......It is our duty courageously toopposethe wi ckedand take good men asmodels, by enriching the churches of God, relieving tho seoppressed by wicked judges, and by judging equitably the powerful and the hum ble." (Charterof Edward, 1063, in The Oxford Illustrated History ofthe British Monarchy, by J. Cannon & R. Griffiths, 1988) Since Edward had no son he prom ised the throne tohis friend Duke William of Normandy. When Edward died in 106 6, Harold, Godwin's son, was crowned instead of William, but William came andde featedHarold in the Battle of Hastings. William became king of England at last; and so endedthe era ofthe Saxons. He died without leavinga son to succeed h im.His nearest relation, Prince Edgar, had lived in exile for much of his life inHungary and was virtually unknown in England.
