Edmund II, byname EDMUND IRONSIDE (b. c 993 - d. 30 Nov 1016), king of the English from 30 April to 30 Nov 1016, surnamed "Ironside " for his staunch resistance to a massive invasion led by the Danish king Canut e.

The son of King Ethelred II the Unready (reigned 978-1016), Edmund defied his father's orders by marrying (1015) the widow of one of the Danish lords th en occupying English territory. Nevertheless, when Canute invaded England late r in 1015, Edmund raised an army in northern England and ravaged regions that w ould not rally to his cause.

Upon Edthelred's death (April 1016), a small nu mber of councillors and citizens of London proclaimed Edmund as their ruler, bu t a larger body of nobles at Southampton declared for Canute. Edmund then laun ched a series of offensives against his rival. He recovered Wessex and relieve d London of a siege before being decisively defeated by Canute at Ashington, Es sex on October 18. In the ensuing peace settlement, Edmund retained Wessex, wh ile Canute held the lands north of the River Thames. After Edmund died (probab ly of natural causes), Canute became sole ruler of England. Edmund II, Ironsid e (1016 AD)

Edmund was King of England for only a few months. After the deat h of his father, Æthelred II, in April 1016, Edmund led the defense of the city of London against the invading Knut Sveinsson (Canute), and was proclaimed kin g by the Londoners. Meanwhile, the Witan (Council), meeting at Southampton, cho se Canute as King. After a series of inconclusive military engagements, in whic h Edmund performed brilliantly and earned the nickname "Ironside", he defeated the Danish forces at Oxford, Kent, but was routed by Canute's forces at Ashingd on, Essex. A subsequent peace agreement was made, with Edmund controlling Wesse x and Canute controlling Mercia and Northumbria. It was also agreed that whoeve r survived the other would take control of the whole realm. Unfortunately for E dmund, he died in November, 1016, transferring the Kingship of All England comp letely to Canute. As ruler of the West Saxons , or Wessex, from 899 to 924, Edward extended his authority over almost all of England by conquering areas that previously had been held by Danish invaders.

Edward ascended the throne upon his father's death in October 899, and in bat tle in 902 his forces killed a rival claimant, Aethelwald, who had allied with the Danes. After defeating the Northumbrian Danes at Tettenhall, he set out in August 912 to subdue the Danes of the eastern Midlands and East Anglia. From 910 to 916 he constructed a series of fortified enclosures around his Kingdom o f Wessex.

At the same time, his sister, the Mercian ruler Aethelflaed, const ructed a complementary series of fortresses in the northwest Midlands. In 917 Edward and Aethelflaed launched a massive offensive, quickly overwhelming the e ntire Danish army of East Anglia. Upon Aethelflaed's death in June 918, Edward assumed control of Mercia, and by the end of the year the last Danish armies i n the Midlands had submitted. Edward, the only surviving son of Emma and Aethelr ed the Unready, had come to England in 1041 at the invitation of Harthacnut who received him into his ownfamily.
