came to England with William, granted lands in CO's Berks, Gloucester,
Hereford, Leicester, N orthampton, Nottingham, Derby, Essex, Stafford, Warwick
and Wilts; some 120 Lo rdships and Manors. He seated himself at Tutbury Castle
and there in 1080 fou nded a monastery for Cluniac Monks. d. 1088
Cokayne's "complete Peerage" (De rby,pp.190-191). Sire de Ferriers
and
Chambrais. These two localities, locate d on the Charantonne, were in the
chief iron producing district of Normandy. The iron workers were under the
jurisdiction of six "barons fossiers". As thi s family apparently
had the most
important or most ancient forges, it was styl ed "premier barons fossiers"
(Thus the background for the surname adopted by t his family - Ferriers). He
was a Domesday commissioner and held some 210 lords hips or manors at the time
of that survey. More than half of them were in Der byshire, but the caput of
his honor was at Tutbury in Staffordshire.

2. Henry de Fe rriers, son of Walcheline de Feriers, obtained from William the
Conqueror, a g rant of Tutbury Castle, co. Stafford, with extensive possessions
in other shir es, of which one hundred and fourteen manors were in Derbyshire.
He must have been of considerable rank, not only from those enormous grants,
but from the c ircumstances of his being one of the commissioners appointed by
King William t o make the Grand Survey, the Domesday Record, of the kingdom.
He
was the found er of the priory of Tutbury, which he liberally endowed.
Crispin and Macary report: " Henry de Ferrieres is referred to by Wace thus;"
Henri li sire de Fe rrieres," and he who then held Tillieres. He was seigneur
de Saint Hilaire de Ferriers near Bernay and the son, of Walkelin de Ferrers,
who fell in a contes t with Hugh de Montfort I. early in the reign of Duke
William, in which both o f these noblemen were killed. He had an older brother
William, also reported a t Hastings, undoubtedly well advanced in years at that
time, who died before t he compilation of Domesday, where his name does not
appear. Henry de Ferrers r eceived 210 manors, 114 of which were in Derbyshire.
The seat of his chief bar ony was Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire, which had
previously belonged to Hugh Lupus, but upon the latter becoming the Earl of
Chester in 1071, it was grant ed to Henry de Ferrers, who founded nearby a
Cluniac monastery. Henry was appo inted one of the commissioners for the
general survey in 1085 and richly endow ed the priory of Tutbury in 1089. He
married Berta _________, whose identity i s unknown, by whom he had three sons:
Enguenulf, William, and Robert."
