1 NOTE 9. Edmund Fitz Alan, 8th Earl of Arundel, in the 34th year ofKing Edward
I., was made a Knight of the Bath with Prince Edward. From thattime to
the 4th year of the ensuing reign, he was constantly engaged inthe wars
of Scotla nd; but he was afterwards involved in the treason ofThomas, Earl
of Lancaster , yet not greatly to his prejudice, for, in the 10thyear of
King Edward II., he was constituted captain-general to the king,from the
Trent northwards, as far as Roxborough in Scotland, and forseveral years
subsequently, he continue d as one of the commanders of theEnglish army in
Scotland, in which service h e so distinguished himself, that heobtained a
grant from the crown of the con fiscated property of LordBadlesmere, in
the city of London and county of Salo p, as well as the escheatedlands of
John Mowbray, Lord Mowbray, in the Isle o f Axholme, and severalmanors and
castles, part of the possessions (also forfe ited) of RogerMortimer, Lord
Mortimer, of Wigmore. But these royal grants led , eventually tothe earl's
ruin; for, after the fall of the unhappy Edward int o the handsof his
enemies, Lord Arundel, who was implacably hated by the Quee n andMortimer,
suffered death by decapitation at Hereford, on November 17,132 6. He
