Peter FitzHe rbert was one of the Barons who signed the Magna Charta, but was not one of the Sureties for its observance. He was at first very obsequious to King John and was reputed one of that Prince's evil counsellors. In 1214 he was constituted G overnor of Pykering Castle, County York, and Sheriff of the Shire. Afterwards, falling off in his allegiance, his lands at Alcester, which he had received thr ough his grandmother, Juliana Corbet, were seized by the crown and given to Wil liam de Camville.
