Dear Mike:
You may remember that I am the Chair of the Genealogical
Committee and Genealogist for Clan Stewart Society in
America, Inc.
I think I probably mailed this to you. However if it
goes back to 1993 -perhaps not, maybe Will Boyd sent it.
[I have a link to the sept names on my personal web
site.] However, the correct term would be that the surnames
are the Septs of Clan Stewart, under the particular
BRANCH of the family.
Boyd is considered a Sept of the Royal Stewart Branch,
not the "Royal Stewart Sept", less there be any confusion
of the way this is listed.
There are over 125 surnames currently known and listed
as Septs of the various branches of the House of Stewart,
commonly referred to as "Clan Stewart." In actuality,
Clan Stewart is a misnomer and there is not only one
Clan, rather about 8 that exist. There is no one chief,
but rather, several associated. They also include in their
literature our own Lord Kilmarnock as being an associated
Chief.
I have been fortunate enough to have met the 1st cousin of the
current Marquess of Bute on several occasions and even more
fortunate to have visted Bute in March of this year. I took
several photos of the Marquess of Bute's holdings. Mount
Stewart House was closed at that time of year, but open for
tours later in the year.
There are many ties indeed between the Boyds and the Stewarts througout the
ages. One of the origins of the Boyds [Linda
Lahawn, bless her soul, would dispute this vehemently were
she still subscribed to the list <g>] is that the Boyds and
the Stewarts share a common lineage through Walter, 1st High
Steward.
Walter had two sons. One named Alan -- who became 2nd High
Steward of Scotland and the other named Simon. When surnames
came into being again circa the 1100's, Alan took his job
name. Thus the Stewart line came into being. Robert, Simon's
son chose a descriptive name, rather than a job name. He was
fair and yellow haired and thus was named Robert Buidhe. The
name has since come down through the ages to be Boyd. So,
if one follows this as the origin of the Boyds they prefer to
acknowledge, it would follow that the Boyds are cousin to the
Stewarts. This is the origin that Clan Stewart embraces. And
it explains why we are considered part of the Royal Branch of
the Family.
