Many years ago there lived in Connecticut an eminent judge named Judge John Phelps of Suffield, Connecticut, where he was born in 1736. He was our great great great-grandfather;
from whom descended our grandmother, Clara Honey Austin Tardy.

About 1754, he courted the daughter, Mary, of Sir William and Lady Abigail Richardson of Edinburgh, Scotland, a girl of about 16 years. "Much too young to marry", her mother said, and locked her daughter in her room; but love laughs at locksmiths, so Mary evidently heard a tapping at her window which proved to be young Phelps with a ladder; she promptly made a bundle of her clothes, threw them to her sweetheart and slipping down the ladder, ran away and was married to John Phelps. The latter was an honored and influential man represented his district in the legislature for many years, was also a delegate to the Convention of 1779, to ratify the Constitution of the United States. Was, also, interested in the manufacture of iron and with others, erected a blast furnace on large scale, making cannon balls for the Government. There is a fine picture of him - an elegant , courtly gentleman in knee breeches and buckled shoes, ruff and powdered queue.

Of the children born to him and Mary Richardson, we are personally interested in a daughter, Ester Phelps who married Elijah Austin. She was wedded three time and her first husband was named Elijah and her last one, Elisha.

Esther and Elijah Austin were our direct ancestors too. Years ago, an interesting clipping from Youth's Companion told us of this Elijah Austin being a poor and determined boy, ambitious to achieve an education; how he went off to school, wearing shoes made at home from the hide of their own cow.

He did valiant service in the Revolutionary Army, later was a shipping merchant and died of yellow fever in New York (1794) while superintending the discharge of one of his ships from India. Aunt Etta visited his grave in Hartford, Conn., a gray stone slab against West Wall of Grove Street Cemetery; in front of it the Revolutionary Marker placed there by the U, U. S. A. R.
This is a bronze or iron staff surmounted by a star enclosed in a wreath; on star: the words "E Pluribus Unum"; on the wreath: 1775, A Patriot's Grave, 1783.
Elijah Austin, 1751-1794.
A member of the 2nd company, Governor's Foot-Guard, organized at New Haven, December 28,1774.

Forty members of this company, among them,. Elijah Austin, marched to Lexington to join the American Army, April 22, 1775 under command of General Benedict Arnold, and were complimented by the British on their soldierly appearance.

Horace Austin, the oldest child of Elijah Austin and Esther Phelps, was the father of Clara Honey Austin, who married Balthazar Tardy. His brother, Charles, was the father of Cousin Mary Austin Howard, of Baltimore; then there were two daughters, Mary, who married Horace Holley of Kentucky (for whom Cousin Mary was named), Henrietta, who married James Dall of Baltimore, and was not only the aunt but adopted our grandmother; Clara, and was her devoted foster-mother; Aunt Etta and her young sister Caroline, and their brother, Alexis, always spoke of Mr and Mrs. Dall as "Grandma and Grandpa Dall".

Another son of Horace Austin and his wife Elizabeth Richards (they lived in Missouri, and are buried in a churchyard in Hannibal) was Henry Austin who moved to Texas. There were also Archibald and William Austin, so you see, they had a large family. The oldest was named Mary and was a young lady when our grandmother was born. At that same time, Capt. Honey was coming to the house to see Mary so the new baby was given his sweet name for her middle name.

To go back in this history: Elizabeth Richard's father in the Revolutionary war had his hand shot off and ever after had to wear something like a gold bodkin n its stump; it was preserved by his descendants, and his grand daughter (who was Cousin Ella Fletcher's mother) showed this bodkin to Aunt Etta, in St. Louis. This grand daughter of Horace Austin was first Mary Honey and her second husband was Mr. Fletcher. He was a diplomat and distinguished in public life. I think he was Governor Fletcher of Missouri.

Our grandmother had a sister Jane, who married Mr. Springer;. A brother, Archibald and sister Margaret were sent to Baltimore to Cousin Mary's mother and father; he was an Episcopal clergyman and also taught a school, so his wife's hands were very full and they were unable to keep their little niece and nephew, who had to return to Mo. Little Clara was more fortunate among this large family of orphans; being eight years old at her parents' deaths, she was adopted by her Aunt Henrietta Dall and she always called Mr. and Mrs. Dall "Father and Mother". I suppose she named her first daughter, (Aunt Etta) "Henrietta" for Mrs. Dall of Balto., This immediate Dall family consisted of a daughter, also Henrietta; (who became Mrs. Whittredge). Louisa (Mrs. Atkinson) Austin (who was Cousin Hallie Austin's Aldrich's father and who married a Kentucky cousin) Joseph(who was "Etta Dall's father); and Charles; the latter being the favorite and most beloved foster-brother of little Clara Honey. He was a saintly man, a Unitarian minister, who went as a missionary to India and labored alone there for thirty years; his wife the brilliant Caroline Healy Dall, a Bostonian by birth (and instincts, I suppose) stayed behind in this country and labored for women's' suffrage and reared two children, Professor Wm. H. Dall, scientist of Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D. C. and Sarah Dall Munro who lived in Buffalo and traveled extensively and died at sea on way to Panama or Cuba for her health. She was a charming, lovely philanthropic woman, known to us as "Cousin Saidie" through her kindness and correspondence with M.B.T.

When our grandmother, Clara Honey Austin, was about sixteen years old and visiting a brother in Mobile, she met and married there a French gentleman who with his father, Alexis Tardy and moved from Charleston, S. C. (his birthplace) to Mobile, Ala. This Balthazar Tardy was a very successful business man. His father came from LaRochelle, France to Charleston, S.C. and his portrait and that of his wife and father are owned by Clarence Tardy, a son of Balthazar Tardy by a second marriage. These are beautiful oil paintings and were found in Mobile in a home of Grandpa's niece, Grace Moran, Aunt Caroline's daughter, from whom Clarence bought them. Our grandfather Tardy had a large family of sisters and brothers to whom he was devoted and helpful. They must have followed him from Charleston to Mobile to improve their fortunes or that is the impression. His brother Gustave lived in New Orleans and was the father of Mary, Gustave and Blanche. Their mother's name was Cecilia. Aunt Virginia, his sister, was wedded three time, her last husband being John Tisdale, the maternal uncle of my mother, Mary Tisdale Smith and it was in their home at Kushla, a suburb of Mobile that young Alexis Horace spent happy hours with his boyhood sweetheart, Mary. But I am getting too far ahead:

Our grandfather's broth Edwin lived in Mobile and reared a large family. It is stated that our grandmother, Clara visited two brothers here, one named Charles and the other William Austin; the latter was the grandfather of Dr. John M. Wilson's wife, Margaret Austin. As a little girl, I recall him distinctly when my widowed mother went to his bank to consult him and Mr. Hubbard on business.

Our grandmother was a devoted Christian, being a member of the Government Presbyterian Church, Mobile but her earthly existence was a brief one, for she passed away at the age of thirty-nine years at birth of a baby girl named Clara Virginia; this little daughter survived some time and had a colored nurse, Charlotte. Our grandfather erected a red brick vault with marble monument on top for his young wife's last resting place in Magnolia Cemetery, Mobile. We presume our grandmother died of puerperal fever: They sent to New Orleans for Dr. Knott to prescribe for her; leeches were applied as was custom then and her husband had his arm cut to secure blood to give these creatures the taste. It is said she smiled at their efforts and shook her head knowing all was useless. She called her children around her and gave them each a last message.

She was one of God's saints and her key work in life was PEACE. She was one of the most patient of women and it is said would lead in prayer at woman's prayer meetings. Her Christian life must have shown forth beautifully in the home circle; when her father-in-law, the first Alexis Tardy in this country was dying, he was asked if he'd like for a priest to be summoned as the old gentleman was of Roman Catholic faith, but he requested instead, the pastor of Clara Honey Tardy, a Presbyterian minister.

Our grandmother had dark hazel eyes and the sweetest mouth and expression, judging by her portrait painted when she was said to be only eighteen. But in a black dress low necked and with no ornaments save a quaint breast pin, leaning very slightly on one lovely hand that touched her chin, the artist may have been guilt of an affectation as it were, but he had perpetuated in our beloved ancestor, our father's mother and Aunt Etta's and Aunt Carrie's mother a picture that seems with its sweet, elusive smile, another Mona Lisa.
