Gary's father is the brother of Issac H. Gary, Rebecca's father. If this is true, Rebecca and A. M. were first cousins. They came to Texas before 1860 and settled in Parker Co. as they were living there when Cynthia Ann Parker was recaptured from the Indians and returned home. History has recorded the date of her return as Decem ber 17, 1860. The Deed Records of Parker Co. show that on February. 24, 1857,A. M. Gary, by virtue of Preemption Affidavit No. 40 taken before John H. Nance, Co. Clerk of Parker Co., did file on a certain tract of 160 acres located onthe waters of Dry Creek, a tributary of the Brazos River, about seven miles N45W o f the town of Weatherford. The field notes state that it joins a Preemptions Su rvey of 160 acres made to Peter Waldon. A. M. bought a small tract of landin R efugio Co., TX near Saint Mary on the coast, where he worked in a hide andtallo w plant. Deed records in Refugio Co., Vol. N. page 568, record a deed to A. M. Gary from Joseph F. Smith, dated June 9, 1868 out of the T. T. Williamsonsurvey in the town site of Saint Mary located on Quarranato Creek, QuowarrantoBayou. The price consideration was $50 cash, and a note for $90. The field notes are g iven, but the entire area covered is not specified. According to the measuremen ts, the tract was small, probably between 15 and 20 acres. The deed wasnot file d on record until July, 1882, which tallies with the story that he moved off an d left it for foreclosure. He was living in Refugio Co. when the 1870 United States Census was taken, but Census Records in the University of Texasarchives do not list him there. Oral history has it that the menfolks went to work in th e hide and tallow plant in Old Saint Mary, and the rest of the familyresided el sewhere, claiming that location as their legal residence. The 1870 census recor d shows him as a farmer, which indicates that the hide and tallow job played ou t. Since he was listed as age 59 on the census which was dated July 26, 1870, h is birthday must be after July 26th. Abslom sold, on June 3, 1871,one hundred and fifty (150) acres of land for $300 to George B. Tennell. The land was loca ted at Sandies and Elm Ford, Karnes Co., TX Land records. Lydia and Elizabeth, the two oldest daughters of A.M. and Rebecca, married in Karnes Co. in 1866. R ebecca's parents were living in Karnes Co. at that time. The last four of their children were born in Loma Vista, TX. In the fall of 1897, they starved out, liquidated, and moved back to Karnes Co. where they rented farming land from Andy Nichols. They camped near Will Homes' house (Mrs. Holmes was a sister of Mrs. Gary) so that they could get water. That same fall, they bought a 100 acre tract of unimproved land joining the Holmes land on the west, beyond the railroad. Again they lived in a tent while they werebui lding a house and boring a well. The little village of Pullen sprang up on the west side of the railroad near the Gary land. In 1904, they moved into Pullen, TX where their daughter, Myrtle served as Postmistress for a little over ayear . In the meantime they bought another 100 acres of raw land across the lane, bu t the corners didn't quite hit.
