Nathaniel HALSTEAD

His paternal grandfather, who came from an old family in this country,was a
hero of the Revolutionary War, and went from Orange Co., NY to WilkesBarre. He
lived on a farm in Luzerne Co. for many years. Alanson, father of oursubject,
was born on the old homestead there. At maturity, he went to Clifford,
Susquehanna Co. and cleared a tract of forest. He built a cabin anddeveloped a
good farm. He died at age 82. His wife was Phoebe Wells, a native ofLuzerne Co.
Her father, James Wells, who at one time owned a gristmill nearStroudsburg,
took care of all the local widows and orphans, supplying them with flour.He
later moved to Susquehanna Co. and died when over 91 years of age. Hiswife
lived to be 82. Of the 12 children born to Alanson and Phoebe Halstead,all but
one grew to maturity: D.W., who died in Clifford; Mrs. Catherine Coleman,who

1844 until 1847 he worked in his home township. But in the summer of 1847he
moved to Carbondale and built many of the houses there. He was his ownarchitect
and among the structures he built was the Manville house. In Apr 1855, hecame
to Scranton and put up a store on the present site of Megargel & Connell's
Store. He lived here for 5 years and then built his present home onMifflin Ave.
At that time, Lackawanna Ave and Spruce St were impassable after dark,being
unpaved. The only brick building on the former street was the then newWyoming
house and the place now occupied as a store by Hunt & Connell. Mr.Halstead
built enough houses, stores and other structures in various parts ofScranton to
make a good-sized village. When the Linden St. Bridge was being erected,Mr.
Halstead was appointed by Mayor Connell to serve as city inspector andensure
proper construction of the bridge. He also engaged in the manufacture oflime in
Portland for several years, having a retail place there, and was alsointerested
in a stone quarry at the railroad bridge. He is a Republican, and for 10years
has served as assessor for the city and county in the 16th ward, andrepresented
it in the common council for 4 years. He was chairman of the board ofrevision
and appeals. In Oct 1894, Mr. & Mrs. Halstead celebrated their golden
anniversary, with 400 friends. His bride was F.A. Thatcher, and theymarried in
Clifford. Her father Orrin, of Connecticut, was a pioneer in CliffordTownship.
Her mother, a Scofield, had often heard her relatives tell of how theyescaped
the Wyoming Massacre by hiding themselves. Nathaniel and his wife had 5
children: Mrs. Phoebe M. Downing of Scranton; H.H., who died at age 2;Mrs.
Annie Kellar, who died at age 30 in Portland; Frank N., assistantpaymaster of
the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad; and Mamie E., Mrs. C.F.Whittemore,
whose husband is a member of the firm L.B. Powell and Co. Mr. & Mrs.Halstead
are 2 of the 4 charter members of the Penn Avenue Baptist Church, theformer
drawing up the plans and beginning the actual building. He has been adeacon
here and at Hyde Park Baptist Church.
