Source: Francis R. Harbison, "Flood Tides Along the Allegheny", reprinted by New Kensington Chapter DAR, Closson Press, 1993:
"(Samuel) had stepped from the schoolroom into the laboratory to concoct a heat-resisting lining for the all-consuming furnaces. As he prospered, he continued to devote a Biblical tithe of one-tenth to Godly purposes. Early in its history, Samuel had came to the aid of the new (Grove City) college. When he joined his fathers, his widow and his sons built in his memory a chapel of inspiring beauty to crown the pine-clad banks of Wolf Creek and the campus.

Source: "Guide to the Records of the Harbison & Walker Refractories Company, 1894-1986": "Harbison & Walker Refractories Company was founded as the Star Fire Brick Company of Pittsburgh in 1864, by a group of 11 Allegheny County residents. The original works was located at 22nd and Railroad Street in the heart of the Strip District. By September 1865, using clay from the mines at Bolivar, Pa., Westmoreland County, the birst bricks were produced. The increased demand for bricks prompted the company to enlarge their operations in 1874. The company later bought property across the railroad from the site of the original Star Fire Brick Works. In Januayr 1875, Hay Walker purchased interest in the company and renamed the company Harbison & Walker. Mr. Samuel P. Harbison, who play an active role in the company activities from its foundation was not satisfied with the clay mined at the Bolivar mines and found a better supply at Benezet, Elk County, Pa., where the Company bought 350 acres of land.
The company was enlarged significantly betwee 1882-1902 following the demand for brick products. In 1882, the works purchased the Escanaba Furnace Co. and Cascade Iron Co. as well as 12 other firebrick companies. The Woodland Works of Woodland, Pa. was the first works of Harbison & Walker to manufacture brick outside the Pittsburgh works. The Woodland Works became the model for practice and final authority in brick making at Harbison & Walker and produced its own brand of brick.
In the 20th Century, Harbison & Walker continued to buy refractories throughout Pennsylvania. With these mergers & purchases, Harbison & Walker expanded their capacity significantly & by Sep., 1903, the Company owned over 30,000 acres of fire clay, coal, & ganister lands in Pennsylvania.
During World War I, a shortage of labor prevented Harbison & Walker to runn at full capacity. Harbison & Walker employees fgained by having seven advances in wages between 1916-18, doubling their wages.
Harbison & Walker Refractories Company has been an innovative leader in both research and manufacturing of refractory materials throughout the history of the Company. They were the first refractory to use and develop the continuous tunnel kiln in the U.S. for the burning of silica. In 1909, the company began operating its own chemical and testing laboratory, & provided numerous publications of refractory practices and technology. With the need for better products & production methods to compete in the market, Harbison & Walker built the $2,000,000 Harbison & Walker Company Garber Research Center in 1959. This research center contained the most advanced equipment at that time for the development and testing of refractory products. The Company continues in the 1990's as a world leader in refractory products with branches operating in the United States, Canada, and South America." (This company was listed on the Pittsburgh Stock Exchange before 1929.)[ROBT~1.GED]
