Andrew Hardee Sr. born ca. 1730 in Beaufort Co. North Carolina, in what was later to become part of Pitt Co. to at this time unkown parents, where he lived until shortly after 2/19/1788, when he sold his last 15 acres of land that he patented in 1772, for 20 shillings to a Nathaniel Cannon, wit: by Thomas Hardee Jr. and Benjamin Cox.
David L. Hardee in his book The Hardy/Hardee Family In The South, And Southwest, on page 302 Pitt County land grants shows ( Andrew Hardy, 2 grants, 14 May 1772 to 22 July 1774 on Swift and Turkey Creek, total acres - 714.) We will see his disposal of same below. Before the 1788 land sale Andrew, had many other land tranactions as follows:
Referances are made on almost all his land sales to land he patented in 1772 the total is 365 acres, plus 140 acres he patented in 1774 that he sold to Simon Burney Sr. for 50 pounds (Pitt Co Deed Book F pg. 328, 1/24/1778). The first land transaction we find with Andrew is on March 11, 1756 when a William Vines of Beaufort Co sold to Andrew 125 acres, as follows: Beaufort Co. Deed Book 3 pg. 239 March 11, 1756 To Andrew Hardee for 10 Pounds half my plantation on S/S of Tar River N/S of Indian Well almost to the head of Clayroot Swamp 125 acres. Wit: John woodward, Henry Cannon and Richard Flanikin. (Vines got the land in 1753 from Robert Thompson, this is per Roger Kammerer, who thinks that William Vines may be the father of Averilla, Andrew
s wife due to the low price Andrew paid for the land).
To follow is list of other land tranctions Andrew had:
Pitt Co. Deed Book E- pg. 123 (1/25/1773) Grantor: Andrew Hardee (Pat. 1772) Grantee: Ann Ferguson 100A; 5 pounds.
Pitt Co. Deed Book E- pg. 159 (6/26/1773) Grantor: Andrew Hardee (Pat. 1772)
Grantee Samuel Smith 150A; 5 pounds. ( The above two land tranctions are a small amount to pay for this land, perhaps they are relatives).
Pitt Co. Deed Book F- pg. 99 (1/23/1775) Grantor: Andrew Hardee (Pat. 1772) Grantee: Thomas Hardee, son ----A?; 10 pounds. Adj: David Mills, Pearson Tuten. Wit: Pearson Tuten. From This sale we find that one of his sons names was Thomas.
Pitt Co. Deed Book F- pg. 293 Grantor: Andrew Hardee (Pat. 1772), William Williams, And Ann Williams, wife Grantee: David Mills 100A: 27pounds. men.: Ann Fergerson now Ann Williams. Wit: Pearson, William Hardee (this could be another son).
Pitt Co. Deed Book F- pg. 328 (1/24/1778) Grantor: Andrew Hardee (1774) Grantee: Simon Burney Sr. 140A: 50 pounds.
Pitt Co. Deed Book L- 373 (2/19/1788) Grantor: Andrew Hardee (Pat. 1772) Grantee: Nathaniel Cannon 15A; 20 shillings. Wit: Thomas Hardee Jr. and Benjamin Cox. ( This is the last transaction for Andrew in Pitt County, NC). Other references to Andrew Hardee in Pitt Co Deed Books are: (DB F- pg. 104 1/1775); (DB G- pg. 398 10/13/1783); (DB H- pg. 146 1/25/1773); ( DB L- pg. 331 11/6/178_ ).
We next find Andrew Hardee two years later in Brunswick County, North Carolina For the census of 1790, he is listed with one male 16 years and upward (this would be Andrew Sr.) One male under 16 years ( this would be 1777 Andrew Jr.) and two free white females (this would be Andrew
s wife Averilla, and a daughter) no slaves.
The 1800 Brunswick Co. census shows Andrew, with one male between 16 to 26years of age ( this would be 1777 Andrew Jr.) one male over 45 years, ( this would be Andrew Sr.) one female over 45years of age ( this would be Averilla the daughter must have died or married since 1790), and one slave.
At this time do not have any records where Andrew Sr. was granted or bought land in Brunswick Co, but in the Brunswick County Land Grant Book "A" we find on page 182 #---? Andrew Hardee - 125 acres - on Grissett Swamp, joining land of Mr. Sims and Andrew Hardee Senr. Entered 27 January 1800 - Issued 15 December 1801. (so we have proof that Andrew Sr. did own land on Grissett Swamp before Andrew Jr.) The part of Brunswick County that Andrew Sr. lived in, was later to become part of Columbus County, that was formed out of part of Brunswick, and Bladen Countys in 1808. From this we can assume that Andrew Sr. lived on or near Grissett Swamp in what was then Brunswick Co. From the book Columbus County, North Carolina Recollections And Records, page 248 & 250 states that "The old Brunswick - Bladen County line ran just north of Lake Tabor and through the present town limits. The aera with in the city limits was included in Columbus County by legislative act in 1808." From Brunswick County Court Minutes Book I, 1789 - 1801, we find this about Andrew Hardee Sr. Court records Monday April 10th. 1797, page 163; Deed of gift from Andrew Hardie to Joseph and Andrew Hardie for sunries proved in court by oath of Joseph Sowls and ordered to be registered. Same book page 164, same day Andrew Hardie is appointed Constable in the roome of Joseph Sowl in the Seven Creek District orded that he appear before Luke Goodman Esqr. to quallifie and enter into bond. ( This Andrew could be Jr. as Andrew Sr. would be in his late 60
s). Andrew Hardee Is missing from the 1810 Brunswick Co. census, but he showes up in Prince George Parish (Horry Co) South Carolina, in his household there is listed 2 males under 10 years of age ( this would be 1777 Andrew Jr's children) 1 male between 16 and 26 years of age (to explain this we would have to suppose that Andrew Jr's wife was a widow, with a child this age, because no child to fit this age was in the 1800 Brunswick Co census, or if Isaac (1788) is Andrew Sr. son he could have been left in Pitt County, with his grandparents and he had moved to the Horry District to be with his father, this to be proven, or disproven later.) One male of 26, and under 45 years ( this would be Andrew Jr.) 1 male of 45 years and upward (Andrew Sr.) 1 female of 10, and under 16 years of age (Andrew Jr
s daughters) 1 female of 26 and under 45 years of age (This would be 1777 Andrew
s Wife). 1 female of 45 and upward ( Andrew Sr
s wife Averilla). Andrew Sr is not listed in the 1820 Horry County census, in his place is Andrew Jr. Andrew Hardee Sr. died ca. 1818. Andrew Hardee Sr's son Joseph Hardee was in the Horry County District, before the 1790 census, he must have set the ground work for his father and brothers move from Brunswick, and Pitt County, to Horry County. From the Horry District Commissioner Of Location Plat Book A, B, C, 1802 - 1831, page 52 we find that Andrew Hardee Sr was granted 500 acres on North side of Waccamaw River, bd, by said river Simpson Creek , John Parker, and vacant, surv. by Thos . Hemingway. Note: forwd per Captn. Carter.
A, Andrew Hardee, and Isaac Parker, were granted 467 acres on Simpson Creek, bound by Mr. Hazel, Andrew Hardee, est. of Thomas Livingston, west edge of Simpson Creek, and vacant. page B92, date surveved 18 March 1816, date entered May 17th 1816. ( This Andrew Could be Andrew Jr. Sr. may not have been dealing in land at his age, late 80
s). (WSH)

NOTE: From the deed below found by and transcribed by Mrs. Nula Jordan Tingleff has put a new propect on the surname for Andrew
s wife Averilla, from a VINES to perhaps TAYLOR.
In talking with Ms. Martha M. Marble, who I consider a expert in her knowledge of Pitt County, North Carolina, and Virginia, familes. She has a gut feeling that perhaps Averilla
s mother Sarah, could have been a widow and her marriage to Taylor could have been a second marriage. She feels that Averilla has a Hardee in her direct line connected with the Parrott family of Middlesex County, Virginia, as that is the only place she has seen that name. Ms. Marble feels sure that this Andrew and Everilla Hardy / Hardee are the same as my dirict line of Andrew and Averilla Hardee.
Much more research is needed on this line.
