DICKIE BALLARD is the youngest chil d of Lee Roy Ballard and Audrey
Winslow. Along with his immediate two sister s, he went to live in Boles
Home (a childrens' home 50 mi. NE of Dallas, TX). He was about 3 yrs. of
age at the time and remained there until about 10th grade, at which time
he went to live with our older sister Opal Ballard Todd, in Kansas City,
MO. His birth on 9 Feb 1938 is recorded in Book 8, p 675, E astland Co.
Courthouse, Eastland, TX.
Upon completion of High School, he ent ered the U. S. Air Force and served
20 years. Following this, he and wife JO YE, moved to South Texas and
eventually purchased the RED BARN (a beer joint) , in George West, TX,
that they both operated very successfully for approxima tely 20 years.
They have a nice home on the Nueces River, outside George Wes t, TX, about
one hour north of Corpus Christi, TX. To them was born one chil d, a son
Brian David Ballard. In June, 2000, Brian took proprietorship of th e RED
BARN and continued a successful business venture.
In April 1999, they celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary, and
shortly thereafter, Dickie was diagnosed with cancer. Such a sad thing
but it appears to be very much in o ur genes. He is our very loved "baby
brother" and this is very hard to acce pt. He went through chemotherapy
and it was successfully shrinking his Squam ous cell tumor, when he
developed this blood infection.
On 15 Sep 1999, a.m. , he was admitted to the hospital in Corpus Christi,
TX, with pneumonia and v ery soon was put on a respirator. In just a
matter of hours, he was diagnose d with Sepsis, and soon went into Septic
Shock, resulting in shut down of his vital organs. I flew down there
immediately but he was in a non-responsive state so I don't know if he
was aware of my presence. It was SO sad! He pas sed away about 2:30 a.m.
on Sunday, 19 Sep 1999.
He requested closed casket and his body was immediately transported to
Fort Sam Houston National Cemeter y in San Antonio, TX, where he was given
a burial with full military honors. My first cousin Jerry Winslow, along
with about 20 friends from George West, TX, were in attendance.
The following appeared in the Corpus Christi Caller-T imes on Tuesday,
September 21, 1999: "Dickie J. Ballard, George West, TX, an Air Force
veteran of the Vietnam War, died Sept. 19, 1999. He was 61.
"Sur vivors include his wife, Joye; one son, Brian Ballard of George West;
two sis ters, Blanche Tremble of Hobbs, NM, and Barbara Leedahl of St.
Louis; and thr ee grandchildren.
"Services will be at 1:45 p.m. Sept. 21 in Fort Sam Houston National
