IN E.CO.5TH ARMY INF..UNTILL HE WAS PAROLED IN APRIL 26 1865 PAROLED IN GREENBORO N.C.[xx.FTW] [FRANCISH.FTW] Whitley Allen Haywood was born August 29, 1838, Carroll County, Tennessee, the third born son and the sixth born child of Whitley H. and Nancy Haywood. About 1848, Allen moved with his parents to Henderson County, Tennessee where he attended school and worked on the farm. In 1859, he accompanied his older brother El Caney Wesley and family to Greene County, Arkansas, where the family settled on lands about four miles west of the present day Piggott, Arkansas. While still in Arkansas assisting his brother in settling on his lands, the Civil War between the states was begun, so in early 1861 he joined the Confederate Army at Point Pleasant, Missouri. He served in Company E., 5th Army Infantry from 1861 until he was paroled on April 26, 1865. He reached the rank of Corporal and was involved in many battle skirmishes. He and many other Confederate Prisoners were paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina, without pay and with only the clothes on their backs. Discouraged as he was, he was anxious to return home to Tennessee, so in company with several other former prisoners, he set out for home walking and forging for food along the way. They were fortunate to have many sympathetic Southerners along the way that offered them some food and shelter. In late May he walked into his father's house in Henderson County, Tennessee. There were many tears, but also rejoicing that he had survived and returned home safely. His parents had not heard any news of him for many months and did not know if he was dead or alive. As time went by he gradually regained his strength and spirit for living. In late 1865 during a church revival he met a beautiful young lady that was destined to be his wife. He married Zilpha Elizabeth Taylor on January 11, 1866, Carroll County, Tennessee. She was born May 10, 1844 in Hickman County, Kentucky, the daughter of Louis Henry and Sabrey M. Taylor. Her brothers were William B., Hugh E., James E., Henry C., and M. H. Taylor. Her sisters were Mary Ann, Susan E., Adaline P., and Martha F. Taylor. When first married Allen and "Lizzie," farmed on lands adjacent to that of his parents until 1873, but Allen was not happy in a land that had been divided and scarred by the Civil War, so he planned for the day that he could return to the hills of Arkansas. During the dry summer months of July 1873, the family set out from Tennessee with a loaded wagon and two cows for Arkansas. The trip took the better part of a month, but the children all survived this very tough ordeal. Allen settled on lands adjacent to his brother El Caney Wesley who had prospered in the community. With the help of his brother and nearby neighbors he constructed a log cabin that is still partially standing to this day. He remained in this area known as the "Haywood Community, " and farmed for the remainder of his life. He gradually acquired additional lands, so was able to help his children by giving them land and other assistance upon their marriages. He assisted his brother and other close neighbors in establishing a school and church in the community. The Haywood School provided educational opportunties for the local children until the mid-1940's. The church burned in the late 1930's. Allen and Lizzie were members of the Cummins Chapel Methodist Church for all their remaining years. Parents: Whitley Henry HAYWOOD and Nancy Blount BATTON. Spouse: Zilpha Elizabeth TAYLOR. Whitley Allen HAYWOOD and Zilpha Elizabeth TAYLOR were married on 11 Jan 1866 in Carroll County, TN.3,218,643 Reference Number:653550 Children were: Eliza Ann HAYWOOD, James Wesley HAYWOOD, William Henry HAYWOOD, Lewis Whitley HAYWOOD, Nancy Sabra HAYWOOD, Allen T. Whitley Henry HAYWOOD3,218,487,643 was born in 1805 in Montgomery Co North Carolina.3,487 [NEED TO DEFINE SENTENCE: Alt. Birth]3,218,643 He died in 1875 in Henderson County, Tennessee.3,218,643 He was buried in 1875 in Old Haywood (Hedge) Cemetery.3,218,643 He is reference number 34804. [boyd-trees.ged] [xx.FTW] [FRANCISH.FTW] Shortly after his marriage to Nancy Batten or Bunch he joined his father Partin Calin and many others migrating to Carroll County, Tennessee. Whitley farmed in the area of Buena Vista until about the mid-1840's, where at which time he purchased 345 acres of land in Henderson County near the Carroll County line. The farm land purchased by Whitley is now a portion of the Natchez Trace State Park and is divided by US Interstate Highway 40. Whitley established a graveyard on the farm that contains about 40 graves that are marked only with sandstone markers. This graveyard is now identified as the "Hedge Cemetery," and the entire cemetery is included in the boundaries of the Natchez Trace State Park. Whitley deceased in 1875 and is evidently interred in the cemetery that he established. Nancy the widow continued living on the farm with her youngest daughter Louisa Haywood Hedge until her death in 1892. It is also evident that she is interred by her husband Whiley on the farm. This particular area of the counties was very close to some Civil War actions and battles. The family was lucky to have survived some of these residual actions resulting from nearby skirmishes. Both Whitley and Nancy were saddened to have all three of their sons migrate to Greene County, Arkansas just prior to the out break of the Civil War. One son Whitley Allen returned to the family after the Civil War and married in the area before returning to Arkansas. They were destined to never see their other two sons again. Their eldest son William Richard Haywood was wounded in the Civil War and he deceased before 1870 resulting in the loss of his family connections. Whitley and Nancy not only raised 10 children to adult hood, they took in Lucy Emma Bateman, a grandchild and raisied her after the death of her mother. They also raised a grandson Silas Haywood whose mother has not been confirmed. After the death of nancy, court action was implemented to sell the farm and divide it's proceeds among the heirs. This was accomplished over a two year period and resulted in the naming of Whitley's heirs, both living and deceased. After the court action was completed, the farm was purchased by Jacob Green Hedge, the husband of Louisa Frances Haywood Hedge who had been living on the property for many years. This bitter court battle over Whitleys property evidently resulted in a split of family ties that were never resumed. The heirs inherited a grand total of less than $4.00 each after all the court costs were deducted. Parents: Partin Calvin HAYWOOD. Spouse: Nancy Blount BATTON. He believed faithfully in the bible and in his later years spent many of hours reading it. He was said to have never had an alcoholic drink, but neither did Al. He loved to sing religious songs and was able to teach many friends interested in singing the proper notes. He had very little schooling as young men in that era had to give up school to work on the farm and in the timber. He was mostly a self taught individual. He never saw a movie in his life and refused to attend any saying they taught sin to the younger people. He spent most of his life in Clay County, Arkansas, but did live several years in Dunklin County, Missouri, farming mostly growing cotton. After the death of Almira he lived for several years with his youngest son Ray and family, but also lived with his daughter Edna Seal until his death. [boyd-trees.ged] [xx.FTW] [FRANCISH.FTW] Wesley served briefly as a Town Marshall in the frontier town of Greenway, Arkansas. It was at one time considered the most unlawful town in North Eastern Arkansas. In those early days it had a heavy influx of railroad construction workers, lumber jacks and farm laborers. The tenure of town marshalls was quite short lived in this era. While he was serving as Town Marshall he broke up a bar room brawl in one establishment and then was called to break another dispute in another bar. During the settlement of this dispute, a dsigruntled drunk sneaked up behind him and cut his throat from ear to ear. Luckily, he survived this cowardly attack, but bore a large scar on his throat for the remainder of his life. He later moved to Craighead County, Arkansas where he farmed and established a well drilling business. He later became a Craighead County Deputy Sheriff. His endeavors in the field of law enforcement were legendary. He and his wife Cora Harris were first cousins, she being the daughter of a sister of his mother Serrenie Mayfield. Parents: Elias F.
